Almost everyone in the political arena is distancing him or herself from Harry Reid’s sensational allegations that Mitt Romney completely evaded paying taxes for at least a decade. But not fellow high-profile Democratic Congressperson Nancy Pelosi.
In an interview with The Huffington Post, Pelosi said, “Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact.”
She is referring to Reid’s comment that a former Bain Capital employee told him that Romney didn’t pay taxes for at least 10 years, while he was fully in the private sector and before he decided to make a serious run for national political office.
But by spreading those allegations to a national audience, many people became disgusted at Reid rather than at Romney. It was nothing more than petty water cooler gossip, which has no place in serious political discourse, according to the hundreds of political insiders who weighed in on the controversy.
Nevertheless, Pelosi said, “Harry Reid is a person who is, as we know, A, is a fighter, B, he wouldn’t say this unless it was true that somebody told him that.”
Reid hasn’t commented any further on the issue, and has refused to provide the name of the alleged Bain Capital employee who told him the rumor in the first place.
Even the White House backed away from Reid, saying he speaks for himself.
