New Delhi, Dec 24 (IANS) A BJP delegation met President President Pranab Mukherjee Monday evening and asked him to direct the government to call a special session of parliament to enact legislative measures enhancing security of women in the wake of public outcry over the Delhi gang-rape.

New Delhi, Dec 24 — A BJP delegation met President President Pranab Mukherjee Monday evening and asked him to direct the government to call a special session of parliament to enact legislative measures enhancing security of women in the wake of public outcry over the Delhi gang-rape.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani said: "The terrible incident of rape that happened... there are lot of reactions all over. The way this the anger is being reflected, the government is not doing what it should do."

"Whatever suggestions were given to them were rejected. So we have come to the president, who is the highest official in parliament and in the country," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj added that the opposition's suggestions of calling a special session of parliament and an all-party meeting were rejected.

"Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) rejected the suggestion for an all-party meeting and Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told me he did not feel there was a need for an all-party meeting," she said.

Earlier, the party's core group and party general secretaries met in the capital and said that the outrage against the gang-rape reflects the national mood on the issue of women safety.

The party said that the outrage calls for a fresh look at the statute with to make its provisions more stringent in cases of aggravated crimes against women.

The BJP expressed its complete solidarity with the youth of the country who, it said, had waged "a relentless battle against crime against women" and said it will be in the vanguard of this crusade and strive to get justice to the rape victim.
