Celebs ask Putin to let US families complete adoptions

Feb 7 2013, 12:52pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 7 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A group of prominent Russian artists Thursday appealed to President Vladimir Putin to allow many US families to complete previously started adoptions of Russian children, despite introduction of a law banning Americans from doing so.

Moscow, Feb 7 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A group of prominent Russian artists Thursday appealed to President Vladimir Putin to allow many US families to complete previously started adoptions of Russian children, despite introduction of a law banning Americans from doing so.

The Kremlin introduced the Dima Yakovlev bill Jan 1 in response to Washington's Magnitsky Act, which introduced sanctions against Russian officials suspected of human rights abuses.

As a result, hundreds of adoptions in various stages of the bureaucratic adoption process were suspended.

Many of those US families had already met their would-be children before the ban was introduced.

"We all understand that the law came into effect. Now we can only ask to make an exception for those children who have already met their future moms and for those moms who have already seen their children," said Chulpan Khamatova, a popular Russian actress and charity campaigner.

Khamatova, 37, co-founder of the Gift of Life NGO which helps Russian children, said the children concerned who have got stuck in Russia's outdated orphange system will grow up "and hate their own country", which prevented them having a family.

It is not clear how many US families who have met Russian children have been affected by the ban.

The US State Department has said that between 500 and 1,000 American families had been in the process of trying to adopt Russian children when it took effect.

At least 81 American families who have had meetings with their future Russian children signed a letter to Putin begging him to allow them to complete their adoptions, according to Khamatova.

Putin has not reacted to the appeal.

The appeal was backed by Russian rock musician Andrei Makarevich and Yevgeny Mironov, a prominent actor and art director of the Moscow-based Theater of Nations.

Mironov and Khamatova, a theatre and movie star internationally known for her role in the film "Goodbye Lenin", both backed Putin's candidacy during his re-election campaign through video ads.

Russian officials justified the adoption ban by blaming US parents for the deaths of at least 19 adopted Russian children.

More than 60,000 Russian children have been adopted by American families in the last 20 years, including 962 last year, according to US State Department figures.

Aren’t there more important things going on in the world?’” he said. “Yes, obviously almost everything is more important than this. Ukraine is s ...

DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Stepping up pressure on Moscow, the U.S. on Sunday released satellite images it says show that rockets have been fired from Russia into neighboring eastern Ukraine and that heavy artillery for separatists has crossed the border. Russian Authorities Tell LGBT Group It Should Hold Its Pride Parade In A Landfill

Jul 26 2014 8:12am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: AP Russian authorities are suggested to organizers of an LGBT pride parade in St. Petersburg, Russia that they hold this year’s event in a landfill, representing just the latest in the country’s ongoing effort to humiliate the community. Since 2010, the government has denied the group, Ravnopraviye (Equality), permission to host rallies in public areas and has instead suggested alternative out-of-the-way sites in far off villages. This year, City Hal ...

Muslim-Marxist Obama must be removed now!

Jul 25 2014 5:55pm CDT | Source: WND

President Barack Hussein Obama is literally destroying the world. If you thought that Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were bad, there is no comparison to this socialist/communist, racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-white commander in chief whom I frequently refer to sarcastically, but realistically, as the “Mullah in Chief.” A while back, I was excoriated by the left for my speech before the World War II Memorial as tho ...

Ukraine: Why There Is Hope

Jul 25 2014 9:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The shooting down of Malaysian Flight 17 over Ukraine may actually open doors for peaceful resolution of the conflict there. As evidence mounts of their complicity in the disaster, Russia is now thrown on the defensive and any momentum they and their separatist Ukrainian allies had has been stalled, at least for now, as Russia twists and turns in the glare of global condemnations and threats of significantly more painful economic sanctions. This, and the revolting pictures of the c ...

Let's Tell the Truth About This International Madness

Jul 25 2014 8:04am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The horrible human costs and increasing danger the world is now facing in Gaza, Ukraine, and Iraq show the consequences of not telling the truth. And unfortunately, we seem to mostly have political leaders who are unwilling to admit the truth of what's happening, deal with root causes instead of exploiting symptoms, and then do everything possible to prevent the escalation of violence and further wars. Instead we have p ...

Would McCain or Romney Have Acted Differently From Obama Regarding Today's World Events? Absolutely Not.

Jul 24 2014 6:31am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

To some conservatives, Benghazi is "worse than Watergate", the Affordable Care Act is akin to communism and slavery, and the president has a forged birth certificate. The VA crisis is Obama's responsibility, even though Dick Cheney still believes Iraq was "the right thing" and even freeing a U.S. Marine from the Taliban is considered a "dangerous precedent." To further the notion that Obama is to blame for all of the world's problems, I ...

Why The World Is Spinning Into Crisis Everywhere

Jul 23 2014 4:13pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Israel vs. Hamas. Ukraine vs. Russia. Unaccompanied minors at the Texas border. Syria in flames, with a militant “caliphate” at the door. Iran stalling for time on nukes. A rising China sowing fear throughout the rest of Asia. The world seems dangerously unmanageable these days. President Barack Obama is paying a political price at home, with 55 percent of Americans polled by Pew now disapproving of his handling of foreign affairs -- a ...

America Will Be A Stronger Nation When Gay Marriage And Marijuana Are Legalized Nationally

Jul 23 2014 6:08am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When hundreds of millions of people are governed by certain laws that run contrary to logic and compassion, then everyone suffers from the irrational fears of an older generation of voters. According to the Center for Disease Control, around 88,000 Americans die each year from alcohol related deaths. MADD states that 1.2 million Americans were arrested of drunk driving in 2011 and 10, 322 Americans died from drunk driving in 2012. Yet, alcohol is celebrated and on ...
