Michelle Obama to attend gun violence victim's funeral

Feb 8 2013, 1:35am CST | by

Washington, Feb 8 (IANS) US First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for a Chicago teen who was gunned down just days after performing at the inauguration festivities for President Barack Obama, a media report said.

Washington, Feb 8 — US First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for a Chicago teen who was gunned down just days after performing at the inauguration festivities for President Barack Obama, a media report said.

The White House confirmed Thursday that Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for Hadiya Pendleton who was killed Jan 29, blocks from her school on the south side of Chicago, also close to the Obamas' home, reported Xinhua citing ABC News.

The 15-year-old girl was in the King College Pre School band, who performed with her classmates at several inaugural events in the capitol last month.

White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who are both from Chicago, will also attend Saturday's funeral service.

The first lady's decision to attend the funeral comes as the president is generating public support for his package of gun control agenda and push for Congress to move on the long-time divisive issue.

Days ahead of his second-term inauguration, Obama unveiled a sweeping package of gun violence reduction proposals, a month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting. The December massacre that killed 26 people, including 20 schoolchildren, has renewed the nationwide debate on gun-control necessity.

NYU Associate Professor Thuy Linh Tu argued that media coverage First Lady Michelle Obama’s arms shows “we’re always a little bit uncomfortable with a strong woman,” during a discussion on the late fashion designer Oscar de la Renta on MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry.” “The thing about Michelle Obama's arms is, everybody talks about it. Bill Clinton To Campaign For Mary Burke In Milwaukee

Oct 24 2014 11:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

MILWAUKEE (AP) — President Bill Clinton planned to campaign in Milwaukee on Friday for gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke, but it wasn't clear whether the get out the vote effort would have much impact because most of those in line described themselves as regular voters who already planned to support Burke. Burke has been locked for months in a tight race with Republican Gov. Scott Walker, and a Marquette Law School poll released last week showed the two ...

Michelle Obama has been jetting all across the country stumping for Democrat candidates but several times now has shown a penchant for confusion. Among other mistakes, this week she lost track of whom she was talking about in Colorado. Michelle took the stage at a rally in Denver, Colorado to give incumbent Democrat Senator Mark Udall a boost, but during her remarks, Obama made a blunder about Udall's birthplace. ...

Democrats Fed Up With Obama's Inept, Embarrassing White House

Oct 22 2014 5:40pm CDT | Source: Big Government

According to one Democrat strategist quoted in this report, "The ineptitude of the White House political operation has sunk from annoying to embarrassing." And they're far from alone in the growing criticism of Obama's White House. Most know of Michelle Obama's now infamous gaffe with regard to the name of Iowa Dempocrat and Senate candidate, Bruce Braley. She repeatedly referred to him as "Bruce Bailey" while stumping for him.
