Michelle Obama to attend gun violence victim's funeral

Feb 8 2013, 1:35am CST | by

Washington, Feb 8 (IANS) US First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for a Chicago teen who was gunned down just days after performing at the inauguration festivities for President Barack Obama, a media report said.

Washington, Feb 8 — US First Lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for a Chicago teen who was gunned down just days after performing at the inauguration festivities for President Barack Obama, a media report said.

The White House confirmed Thursday that Michelle Obama will attend the funeral service for Hadiya Pendleton who was killed Jan 29, blocks from her school on the south side of Chicago, also close to the Obamas' home, reported Xinhua citing ABC News.

The 15-year-old girl was in the King College Pre School band, who performed with her classmates at several inaugural events in the capitol last month.

White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, who are both from Chicago, will also attend Saturday's funeral service.

The first lady's decision to attend the funeral comes as the president is generating public support for his package of gun control agenda and push for Congress to move on the long-time divisive issue.

Days ahead of his second-term inauguration, Obama unveiled a sweeping package of gun violence reduction proposals, a month after the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting. The December massacre that killed 26 people, including 20 schoolchildren, has renewed the nationwide debate on gun-control necessity.

The Real Reasons Many White People Can't Empathize With Ferguson, Racial Disparities, Or Black Suffering

Aug 27 2014 6:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I recently had the pleasure of appearing on HuffPost Live with Marc Lamont Hill to discuss the Michael Brown tragedy and my article, Ferguson and Race From White America's Perspective, If It Switched Places With Black America. During the discussion, Mr. Hill asked me a question that epitomizes the lack of outrage expressed by some Americans over the shooting deaths of Michael Brown, Renisha McBride, Trayvon Martin, and the death by chokehold of Eric Garner: Why is it so diffi ...

'Unhashtagable?'

Aug 19 2014 3:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Hashtag activism draws on the logic that outrage or heightened audience reaction caused by iconic images can sway public opinion and eventually effect changes in policy, an argument that in its modern context has been documented since at least the Vietnam War era. With the advent of immediate and pervasive circulation through social media, the growing influence of images and short-form collective communication as persuasive media in policy decisions and social impact i ...
