Sep 17 2014 5:30am CDT | Source: Big Government

Pope Francis is at risk of assassination from ISIS, a top Iraqi diplomat has warned. Habeeb al Sadr, Iraqi ambassador to the Vatican, said that the terror group had issued “credible threats” to the kill the Pope, just days before he begins a visit to Albania. The Vatican has responded, however, by insisting that there is no threat to the Pope's safety, and he will not ride in a bullet-proof Popemobile used by his predecessor Benedict XVI. A ...

Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg Lecture On Islam Gets A Second Look In The Wake Of Islamic State

Sep 11 2014 8:20am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

(RNS) Eight years ago this Friday, Sept. 12, Pope Benedict XVI delivered a lecture at the University of Regensburg in Bavaria in which he seemed to diagnose Islam as a religion inherently flawed by fanaticism. It was an undiplomatic assertion, to say the least — especially coming a day after the 9/11 anniversary — and it sparked an enormous outcry among Muslims and came to be seen as one of a series of ...

Sep 10 2014 9:08am CDT | Source: Big Government

As of December 31, 2014, the shops around Vatican City will no longer be selling the familiar parchment blessings from Pope Francis. In a letter dated April 12, 2014, Msgr. Konrad Krajewski, the Pope’s Almoner—or distributor of alms—announced the termination of a running agreement between the Vatican and local shops and bookstores to sell the parchment blessings. Pope Francis: I Only Have Two or Three Years Left, Considering Retirement

Aug 20 2014 3:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For the first time, Pope Francis has talked about his own mortality, telling reporters he estimates “two or three years” left before his passing. A reporter embedded with the Pope asked him about his overall popularity on the flight back to the Vatican from Asia. The 77-year-old Pope stated, “I see it as the generosity of the people of God. I try to think of my sins, my mistakes, not to become proud. Because I know it will last only ...

Why Pope Francis Might Retire Early

Aug 20 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Pope Francis in South Korea. CREDIT: AP In an unusual display of macabre, Pope Francis directly addressed the question of his own mortality on Monday, laying out a short timeline for his death and raising practical and theological questions around when — or even if — a pope should resign. While answering a question from a French journalist earlier this week about the pontiff’s soaring popularity, Francis let slip an unexpected personal detail: he ...

Cuba Approves Construction of First Catholic Church Since Revolution

Aug 12 2014 2:29pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The BBC reports that Catholic residents of the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba have received permission to build a new church, using whatever material they can find. O ...
