Pope Benedict to resign

London, Feb 11 — Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of February, BBC reported Monday.

The media report said resignations from the papacy are not unknown, but this is the first in the modern era.

Former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at 78 became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 following John Paul II's death.

In a statement, the Pope said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry....

"In today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me."

Pope Francis has called for a global ceasefire during the World Cup final between Argentina and Germany on Sunday.  The two soccer powerhouses will square off in what is the the most-watched sporting event in the world, and most of the world will probably be at a standstill anyway.  "Adherents are asking for a moment of silence around the Sunday, July 13 match to remember those stricken by wars and unrest worldwide ...

Pope against Pope: Homelands of Benedict and Francis Face Off in World Cup Final

Jul 10 2014 11:05am CDT | Source: Big Government

Trevor Francis
Sunday's World Cup championship game pits Pope Francis' native Argentina against retired Pope Benedict's native Germany. The Catholic Church has witnessed pope/anti-pope feuds. But it has never experienced two popes watching the soccer teams of their homelands battle it out for World Cup supremacy.  World Cup 2014 plays as a first for the Vatican for another reason. In a strictly technical sense, none of t ...

Zarate, a Harvard law professor, former deputy National Security Advisor in the Bush administration, an ...

Pope Francis Meets King Felipe VI And Queen Letizia Of Spain
(ISRAEL HAYOM) — Christians are acknowledging that they cannot understand the roots of their religion without understanding and accepting Judaism and Jews. Pope Francis’ visit to Israel is part of another correction in the relations between the Vatican and Judaism in the last two generations: Judaism is no longer an inferior, degraded religion, but legitimate and accepted. The previous pope, Benedict XVI, ...

Pope Francis Meets King Felipe VI And Queen Letizia Of Spain
In another candid press briefing while on board a plane returning to Rome, this time from the Middle East, Pope Francis reportedly said he would not rule out retiring like his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. “I will do what the Lord tells me to do. Pray and try to follow God’s will,” Pope Francis said, according to La Stampa’s Vatican Insider. “Benedict XVI no longer had the strength and honestly, as a man of faith, humble as he is, he took this decision.” “Seventy ye ...

Israelis and Palestinians found themselves in a situation similar to conservative and liberal Catholics in the United States as they attempted to decipher the words and actions of Pope Francis, wondering if he has a side and which one he’s on. Francis became the first Pope to visit Israel by first flying into what he called the “state of Palestine” even though the Vatican does not officially recognize such ...
