Pope Benedict to resign

London, Feb 11 — Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of February, BBC reported Monday.

The media report said resignations from the papacy are not unknown, but this is the first in the modern era.

Former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at 78 became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 following John Paul II's death.

In a statement, the Pope said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry....

"In today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me."

Sep 17 2014 5:30am CDT | Source: Big Government

Pope Francis is at risk of assassination from ISIS, a top Iraqi diplomat has warned. Habeeb al Sadr, Iraqi ambassador to the Vatican, said that the terror group had issued “credible threats” to the kill the Pope, just days before he begins a visit to Albania. The Vatican has responded, however, by insisting that there is no threat to the Pope's safety, and he will not ride in a bullet-proof Popemobile used ...

Pope Benedict XVI's Regensburg Lecture On Islam Gets A Second Look In The Wake Of Islamic State

Sep 11 2014 8:20am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

(RNS) Eight years ago this Friday, Sept. 12, Pope Benedict XVI delivered a lecture at the University of Regensburg in Bavaria in which he seemed to diagnose Islam as a religion inherently flawed by fanaticism. It was an undiplomatic assertion, to say the least — especially coming a day after the 9/11 anniversary — and it sparked an enormous outcry among Muslims and came to be seen as one of a series of missteps that would plague Benedict’s papacy u ...

Vatican Reins in Sales of Papal Blessings

Sep 10 2014 9:08am CDT | Source: Big Government

As of December 31, 2014, the shops around Vatican City will no longer be selling the familiar parchment blessings from Pope Francis. In a letter dated April 12, 2014, Msgr. Konrad Krajewski, the Pope’s Almoner—or distributor of alms—announced the termination of a running agreement between the Vatican and local shops and bookstores to sell the parchment blessings. Since the pontificate of Leo XIII (1878-1903), ...

Member of Parliament Jim Dobbin has died, reports the BBC, while on a visit to Poland with the Council of Europe this weekend. Dobbin, who was 73 when he passed away, was the MP for Heywood and Middleton – a more or less solid Labour seat in the Greater Manchester area. Pope Francis: I Only Have Two or Three Years Left, Considering Retirement

Aug 20 2014 3:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For the first time, Pope Francis has talked about his own mortality, telling reporters he estimates “two or three years” left before his passing. A reporter embedded with the Pope asked him about his overall popularity on the flight back to the Vatican from Asia. The 77-year-old Pope stated, “I see it as the generosity of the people of God. I try to think of my sins, my mistakes, not to become proud. Because I know it will last ...

Why Pope Francis Might Retire Early

Aug 20 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Pope Francis in South Korea. CREDIT: AP In an unusual display of macabre, Pope Francis directly addressed the question of his own mortality on Monday, laying out a short timeline for his death and raising practical and theological questions around when — or even if — a pope should resign. While answering a question from a French journalist earlier this week about the pontiff’s soaring popularity, Francis let slip an unexpected personal detail: he doesn’t th ...

Cuba Approves Construction of First Catholic Church Since Revolution

Aug 12 2014 2:29pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In what appears to be yet another attempt to claim it is "opening" itself to the world, the communist regime of Cuba is reportedly set to approve the construction of a Catholic church on the island for the first time since the Revolution banned public displays of religiosity, considering them antithetical to Marxism. The BBC reports that Catholic residents of the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba have received per ...

Pope Francis To Fly Through China Airspace On Asia Trip, Expected To Send Greeting

Aug 9 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis' upcoming trip to South Korea will provide him with an unusual opportunity to speak directly to the Chinese leadership: His plane is due to fly through Chinese airspace, and Vatican protocol calls for the pope to send greetings to leaders of all the countries he flies over. When St. John Paul II last visited South Korea in 1989, China refused to let his plane fly overhead. Instead, the Alitalia charter flew via Russian airspace, pr ...
