Pope Benedict to resign

London, Feb 11 — Pope Benedict XVI is to resign at the end of February, BBC reported Monday.

The media report said resignations from the papacy are not unknown, but this is the first in the modern era.

Former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger at 78 became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 following John Paul II's death.

In a statement, the Pope said: "After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry....

"In today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me."

Pope Francis: I Only Have Two or Three Years Left, Considering Retirement

Aug 20 2014 3:07pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For the first time, Pope Francis has talked about his own mortality, telling reporters he estimates “two or three years” left before his passing. A reporter embedded with the Pope asked him about his overall popularity on the flight back to the Vatican from Asia. The 77-year-old Pope stated, “I see it as the generosity of the people of God. I try to think of my sins, my mistakes, not to become proud. Because I know it will last only a short t ...

Why Pope Francis Might Retire Early

Aug 20 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Pope Francis in South Korea. CREDIT: AP In an unusual display of macabre, Pope Francis directly addressed the question of his own mortality on Monday, laying out a short timeline for his death and raising practical and theological questions around when — or even if — a pope should resign. While answering a question from a French journalist earlier this week about the pontiff’s soaring popularity, Francis let sli ...

Cuba Approves Construction of First Catholic Church Since Revolution

Aug 12 2014 2:29pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In what appears to be yet another attempt to claim it is "opening" itself to the world, the communist regime of Cuba is reportedly set to approve the construction of a Catholic church on the island for the first time since the Revolution banned public displays of religiosity, considering them antithetical to Marxism. The BBC reports that Catholic residents of the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba have received permission to bui ...

Pope Francis To Fly Through China Airspace On Asia Trip, Expected To Send Greeting

Aug 9 2014 6:35am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Pope Francis' upcoming trip to South Korea will provide him with an unusual opportunity to speak directly to the Chinese leadership: His plane is due to fly through Chinese airspace, and Vatican protocol calls for the pope to send greetings to leaders of all the countries he flies over. When St. John Paul II last visited South Korea in 1989, China refused to let his plane fly overhead. Instead, the Alitalia char ...

Did The Pope Just Challenge The Church’s Position On War?

Jul 28 2014 3:23pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Catholic Church of England and Wales Pope Francis has a habit of saying things that are not necessarily in line with established teaching of the Catholic church, but his most recent appeal for peace in the Middle East may put him at odds with a centuries-old Catholic doctrine concerning the proper use of military force. Speaking during his weekly Angelus address in Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, the first Argentinean pope marked the 100th anniv ...

Pope Francis Calls for Global Ceasefire During World Cup Final

Jul 12 2014 11:35pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Pope Francis has called for a global ceasefire during the World Cup final between Argentina and Germany on Sunday.  The two soccer powerhouses will square off in what is the the most-watched sporting event in the world, and most of the world will probably be at a standstill anyway.  "Adherents are asking for a moment of silence around the Sunday, July 13 match to remember those stricken by wars and un ...

Pope against Pope: Homelands of Benedict and Francis Face Off in World Cup Final

Jul 10 2014 11:05am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sunday's World Cup championship game pits Pope Francis' native Argentina against retired Pope Benedict's native Germany. The Catholic Church has witnessed pope/anti-pope feuds. But it has never experienced two popes watching the soccer teams of their homelands battle it out for World Cup supremacy.  World Cup 2014 plays as a first for the Vatican for another reason. In a strictly technical sense, none of the previous 264 Popes had ever experienced the nation of their birth winni ...
