London, Feb 12 — A 10-year-old British schoolgirl died after skiing into a tree at high speed during a family holiday in the Austrian Alps, officials said Tuesday.
The youngster had been skiing with her father and brother at the Mayrhofen resort when she is said to have lost control and skied into an off-piste area or, outside the officially approved area, Daily Mail reported.
Witnesses said she could not stop and hit the tree at full speed.
Paramedics airlifted the youngster to hospital by helicopter within minutes of Sunday's ski crash, but health officials confirmed she had died.
"The girl left the piste after she lost control of her skis and went into some woods," said police. "She then crashed against a tree. She died in hospital in Innsbruck (city)."
