No warplanes for Syria: Russian arms sales boss

Feb 13 2013, 8:36pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia's state-run arms dealer Rosoboronexport is supplying air-defence missile systems and maintenance equipment to Syria but not combat aircraft, the company's director has said.

Moscow, Feb 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia's state-run arms dealer Rosoboronexport is supplying air-defence missile systems and maintenance equipment to Syria but not combat aircraft, the company's director has said.

Anatoly Isaikin said Russia and Syria previously signed a contract for delivery to Damascus of Yak-130 Mitten jet trainers, but it has been suspended.

The company still has some other outstanding contracts with Syria, Isaikin said, but did not provide details, citing commercial confidentiality.

Syria was the 13th or 14th largest buyer of Russian arms, he said without elaborating.

Russia and the US were involved in a diplomatic war of words last year over Moscow's arms sales to Syria, after Washington accused Russia of supplying attack helicopters to the Assad regime.

Moscow denied those accusations, claiming it was merely returning equipment overhauled as part of long-standing contracts with Syria.

In July 2012, US lawmakers passed a bill breaking off contracts between the Pentagon and Rosoboronexport, which they claimed was "arming the oppressive Syrian regime", the House of Representatives said.

According to US lawmakers, Rosoboronexport supplied nearly $1 billion worth of arms to Syria in 2011, including high-explosives, mortars, sniper rifles, ammunition and attack helicopters which could have been used by Assad's forces to kill civilians.

Isaikin said a $4.5 billion arms contract Russia signed with Iraq in 2012 remains intact but has "yet to go into force".

Cooperation with Iran continues and Russia has resumed dealings with Libya, Isaikin said, adding it has not lost a single contract with Egypt.

He also claimed a Russia-US follow-on contract for the delivery of 12 Mi-171 helicopters to Afghanistan will be carried out, despite the US Congress' recommendations against cooperation with Rosoboronexport.

The US Senate passed an amendment in December, barring the use of American budget funds to purchase goods - including helicopters for Afghanistan - from Rosoboronexport.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned at the time that the measure might affect the Afghan helicopter deal.

Rosoboronexport was subject to US sanctions from 2006 to 2010 for allegedly providing nations including Iran and Syria with equipment that could be used to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Russia signed a total of 1,309 arms contracts with 65 countries worth $17.6 billion in 2012, 150 percent more than in 2011 in terms of monetary value, Isaikin said.

Russia's Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service said in January that Moscow sold $15.16 billion worth of arms in 2012, while expanding its foreign clients list.

India is the leading purchaser of Russian arms, with Myanmar, Vietnam, Venezuela and Middle East countries also among the Russian defence industry's main clients.

The expanded list of clients in 2012 include Afghanistan, Ghana, Oman, and Tanzania.

Wars and Rumors of War

Aug 31 2014 5:38pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The United States faces the possibility of greater involvement in two wars: one with Russia and one with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, aka the Islamic State. One is a throwback to nationalist wars of the past. The other is a worrying harbinger of the future. But for Ukraine the future is now. The Russian invasion and undermining of Ukraine continues as do the absurd denials by Russian President Vladimir P ...

President Barack Obama’s lack of a clear strategy to confront the Islamic State set off resounding frustration among Republicans Sunday. U.S. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., lamented Obama’s reluctance compared to tough talk from British Prime Minister David Cameron, who raised his country’s terrorism threat level to "severe" and announced new plans to seize jihadists’ passports. "What is President Obama waiting for?" King said on CBS’ Face the Nation. "I ...

1 common link among world's most brutal terrorists

Aug 31 2014 4:55pm CDT | Source: WND

Radical Islam expert Brigitte Gabriel says ISIS is capable of anything from shopping-mall shooting sprees to nuclear attacks in the U.S. and believes the best way to ward off calamity is for Americans to wake up their elected officials and demand they “throw political correctness in the garbage can” and confront the radical threat as it truly exists. She also revealed the one common link motivating the worst terrorists in the world today: the words of the Quran. Gab ...

No time for partisan bickering in Congress

Aug 31 2014 3:38pm CDT | Source: WND

As Congress comes back to Washington, D.C., this week, there is much to be done. First, is the job they have that’s not completed – the budget. Our fiscal year ends Sept. 30, and there is no budget in place. Most likely, they will do a continuing resolution that will either extend the deadline until the new Congress in January or will be pushed off to a “lame-duck” Congress when the elections are over in the first week ...

Westerners flock to Mideast to wage jihad

Aug 31 2014 3:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Every day the mainstream media is now reporting on the growing number of Muslims from the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia who are flocking to the Middle East to wage jihad. After largely ignoring it for years, they are finally reporting about this, but continue to dissemble and deceive about the motive. Longtime readers of my website, Atlas Shrugs (PamelaGeller.com), have long known about American Muslims flocking to Somalia, Syria and Iraq to wage blo ...

America at the tipping point, Part 1

Editor’s note: Chuck Norris’ weekly political column debuts each Monday in WND and is then syndicated by Creators News Service for publication elsewhere. His column in WND often runs hundreds of words longer than the subsequent release to other media. Is history going to repeat itself? I recently read the book, “7 Tipping Points that Saved the World,” by Christ Stewart and Ted Stewart. In it, the authors describe how radical Islam came wi ...

Rocker girl, mother of two... ISIS recruit who wants to behead Christians with a dull knife

Aug 31 2014 3:12pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Islamic State's recruiting efforts across the Western world have been disturbingly successful.  At least two Americans have died fighting for ISIS; both were universally described as fairly ordinary American kids by everyone who knew them, only a year or two ago.  The man who beheaded American journalist James Foley on video was almost certainly a British citizen, most likely Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, a West London rapper from an affluent home whose music was played on BBC Radi ...
