No warplanes for Syria: Russian arms sales boss

Feb 13 2013, 8:36pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia's state-run arms dealer Rosoboronexport is supplying air-defence missile systems and maintenance equipment to Syria but not combat aircraft, the company's director has said.

Moscow, Feb 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russia's state-run arms dealer Rosoboronexport is supplying air-defence missile systems and maintenance equipment to Syria but not combat aircraft, the company's director has said.

Anatoly Isaikin said Russia and Syria previously signed a contract for delivery to Damascus of Yak-130 Mitten jet trainers, but it has been suspended.

The company still has some other outstanding contracts with Syria, Isaikin said, but did not provide details, citing commercial confidentiality.

Syria was the 13th or 14th largest buyer of Russian arms, he said without elaborating.

Russia and the US were involved in a diplomatic war of words last year over Moscow's arms sales to Syria, after Washington accused Russia of supplying attack helicopters to the Assad regime.

Moscow denied those accusations, claiming it was merely returning equipment overhauled as part of long-standing contracts with Syria.

In July 2012, US lawmakers passed a bill breaking off contracts between the Pentagon and Rosoboronexport, which they claimed was "arming the oppressive Syrian regime", the House of Representatives said.

According to US lawmakers, Rosoboronexport supplied nearly $1 billion worth of arms to Syria in 2011, including high-explosives, mortars, sniper rifles, ammunition and attack helicopters which could have been used by Assad's forces to kill civilians.

Isaikin said a $4.5 billion arms contract Russia signed with Iraq in 2012 remains intact but has "yet to go into force".

Cooperation with Iran continues and Russia has resumed dealings with Libya, Isaikin said, adding it has not lost a single contract with Egypt.

He also claimed a Russia-US follow-on contract for the delivery of 12 Mi-171 helicopters to Afghanistan will be carried out, despite the US Congress' recommendations against cooperation with Rosoboronexport.

The US Senate passed an amendment in December, barring the use of American budget funds to purchase goods - including helicopters for Afghanistan - from Rosoboronexport.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned at the time that the measure might affect the Afghan helicopter deal.

Rosoboronexport was subject to US sanctions from 2006 to 2010 for allegedly providing nations including Iran and Syria with equipment that could be used to develop weapons of mass destruction.

Russia signed a total of 1,309 arms contracts with 65 countries worth $17.6 billion in 2012, 150 percent more than in 2011 in terms of monetary value, Isaikin said.

Russia's Federal Military-Technical Cooperation Service said in January that Moscow sold $15.16 billion worth of arms in 2012, while expanding its foreign clients list.

India is the leading purchaser of Russian arms, with Myanmar, Vietnam, Venezuela and Middle East countries also among the Russian defence industry's main clients.

The expanded list of clients in 2012 include Afghanistan, Ghana, Oman, and Tanzania.

Get Out! - The Only Sane Response to the Islamic State

Sep 14 2014 8:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Islamic State (ISIS) proves the law of unintended consequences. Congratulations America! We killed Christianity in the Middle East and unleashed a terror organization with far greater reach and power than Al Qaeda ever possessed. If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, then our foreign policy needs to have been locked away in an institution a long, long time ago. The law of unintended consequences su ...

Saudis drop idea of toppling Syrian regime

Sep 14 2014 7:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Syria’s Bashar al-Assad WASHINGTON – The Saudis are telling Russia they no longer seek to topple the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, but insist they should continue arming and training their surrogates in the Free Syrian Army as opposition to ISIS – even though FSA commanders have signed a non-aggression pact with ISIS. Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal reportedly gave the news to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a staunch defender of ...

Two Cheers for Obama

Sep 14 2014 7:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It took President Obama a long time and multiple stumbles to back into a foreign policy role that looks something like leadership. If Russian President Putin is agreeing to a cease-fire in Ukraine that just might hold, the U.S.-led combination of pressure and restraint deserves much of the credit. Putin considers the loss of the Ukraine one of the great tragedies of Russian history, and before this conflict is over Putin will probably demand and get greate ...

Obama: 'Because We're Leading the Right Way, More Nations Are Joining Our Coalition'

Sep 14 2014 5:36pm CDT | Source: Big Government

In his weekly address, Saturday, President Obama once again tried to separate himself from the "previous administration" by telling the American people he would avoid making "the mistakes of the past" and crowing that he is "leading the right way" so "more nations are joining our coalition."  He said this despite reports his counter-terrorism effort is receiving only ...

Why arm Mideast Muslims, not Christians?

Sep 14 2014 4:23pm CDT | Source: WND

(Warning: This column contains extremely graphic images of children killed and beheaded by ISIS.) Barack Obama’s “strategy” for defeating ISIS is to arm what he describes as Muslim “moderates,” mainly members of the so-called Free Syrian Army. He also claims most victims of ISIS’ killing spree are Muslims, a questionable claim at best and a misleading one for certain. ISIS has specifically targeted for rape, slavery, crucifixion, beheadin ...

What would the Mideast be like without Christians?

Sep 14 2014 3:38pm CDT | Source: WND

ISIS/ISIL has executed another man from the West, this time a humanitarian aid worker. (Both President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner have referred to the group ISIS as ISIL, although press reports refer to both names. There is a nonprofit group in Washington that goes by the initials ISIS, so many now refer to it as ISIL.) ISIS/ISIL obviously doesn’t care if someone is a journalist with nothing to d ...

A Catholic, a Jew – now we know who's next

Sep 14 2014 3:38pm CDT | Source: WND

It’s hard these days to keep up with news events, almost impossible to stay ahead of them. I had this commentary written and ready to send to WND for posting – when I took one last look at the Internet and everything changed. Rewriting was necessary. The headline was just as shocking and grisly as the others. The murderous ISIS followed through on threats to behead 44-year-old British aid worker David Haines. He’d been their prisoner since he was kidnapp ...

Lie of 'moderate' Muslims and Islamic jihad

Sep 14 2014 3:37pm CDT | Source: WND

Why is it that “moderates” never protest against the Islamic terrorism they supposedly reject and oppose? Why are there never any mass Muslim protests against this savagery? The uselessness of the “moderate/extremist” distinction is the focus of a new ad campaign sponsored by my organization, the American Freedom Defense Initiative, or AFDI. We are planning to roll it out on subways, buses and billboards across the country. Why aren’t those ...
