If Congress fails to act on immigration, I will: Obama

Washington, Feb 14 (IANS) A day after making a strong push for comprehensive immigration reform, President Barack Obama has warned lawmakers that if the Congress fails to move forward he will propose his own legislation on the contentious issue.

Washington, Feb 14 — A day after making a strong push for comprehensive immigration reform, President Barack Obama has warned lawmakers that if the Congress fails to move forward he will propose his own legislation on the contentious issue.

Obama conveyed the message through four Democrat senators - Dick Durbin, Chuck Schumer, Robert Menendez and Michael Bennet - who are part of a bipartisan group of eight senators who introduced a framework for immigration reform last month, CNN reported.

A bipartisan group of House members is also working in secret to craft immigration reform measures to deal with the problem of 11.5 million immigrants, including some 250,000 Indians.

With about 58 percent of the illegal or to use the politically correct term "undocumented" immigrants coming from Mexico, the Hispanics have emerged as a major voting bloc that largely backed Obama in the November poll.

CNN citing the White House said that in his meeting Wednesday with the four Democrats, Obama "reiterated the key principles he believes must be a part of any bipartisan, commonsense effort".

He also warned that he "stands ready to introduce his own legislation if Congress fails to act" on a comprehensive immigration reform plan.

The senators in turn told the president "they remain confident that a bipartisan bill could be agreed to in the coming weeks," CNN said citing an aide to one of the Democratic senators

"The Senators said the bipartisan negotiations were progressing well and that both sides were making progress and working together in good faith," the aide was quoted as saying.

In January when the bipartisan group of senators was outlining its immigration framework the White House was telling senators and advocates that they were writing their own immigration bill, CNN said citing Democratic sources.

Democrats then urged the president not to release his own bill, fearing such a move would stymie the delicate negotiations taking place among lawmakers in both parties, it said.

In his State of the Union address Tuesday, Obama called on Congress to send him a comprehensive immigration reform package, saying both sides agree on what measures need to be included to make the system work better.

"Now let's get this done," he said asking the Congress to "send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months, and I will sign it right away."

2008 Immigration Law Stalls Congressional Action On Border Crisis

Jul 22 2014 8:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Robert Menendez
WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Dianne Feinstein recalls turning on her television and seeing a young Chinese girl crying before a judge, without even an interpreter to help her after surviving a harrowing journey to the U.S. That was the genesis of a law six years ago that is now at the center of an immigration crisis at the nation's Southern border. More than 57,000 youths, mostly from Central America, have crossed into the U.S. illegally since October. Fewer than 2,000 of them have been sent bac ...

Congress Can Avoid Iran War By Supporting Negotiations

Jul 16 2014 10:45am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Robert Menendez
If you don't want Iran to have the bomb and you don't want to bomb Iran, a diplomatic agreement is the solution. Yet some on Capitol Hill are already trying to wreck negotiations. Right now in Vienna, U.S. negotiators and their partners from other world powers are in the delicate, late stages of negotiations with Iran. If we succeed, Iran would lock up its nuclear program and put it under constant monit ...

Denying Visas to Cuban Scholars Cripples Obama's Policy of Engagement

President Obama Visits Austin
Despite the stalemate in relations between the U.S. and Cuban governments, President Barack Obama deserves credit for deepening relations between the two societies. His 2009 decision to lift restrictions on Cuban American family travel and remittances has led to a five-fold increase in family visits and remittances have more than doubled. His 2011 decision to restore "people-to-people" educationa ...

For the First Time in Years, Members of Congress Push Back Against Obama Administration's Failed Latin America Policy

Jun 3 2014 2:59pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The 6th Round Of The China-U.S. Strategic And Economic Dialogue & 5th Round Of The China-US High Level Consultation On People-To-People Exchange
In a remarkable eruption of sanity in Washington, there is finally some pushback from Congress against the far-right and "center" on U.S. policy toward Venezuela and Latin America -- something that has not happened under the McCarthyite pall that has prevailed for years. A letter from members of Congress to President Obama last Tuesday expressed strong opposition to legislation that will impose economic sanctions against Venezuelan of ...
