Russia probes 25 cases of defence ministry fraud

Feb 20 2013, 8:48am CST | by

Moscow, Feb 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian authorities are investigating about 25 separate instances of fraud in the widely-publicised Oboronservis case involving illegal sale of property belonging to the defence ministry, the prosecutor general said Wednesday.

Moscow, Feb 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian authorities are investigating about 25 separate instances of fraud in the widely-publicised Oboronservis case involving illegal sale of property belonging to the defence ministry, the prosecutor general said Wednesday.

"Some 25 separate criminal cases have been opened and combined into one probe," Yury Chaika said at a meeting with Russian lawmakers.

"The damage from these frauds adds up to about five billion rubles ($166 million)," he said, adding further damage totalling 2.3 billion rubles ($76.5 million) has been prevented and about 1 billion rubles ($33 million) have been recovered.

The investigation led to the sacking of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov last November, who is still considered a witness in the case.

According to investigators, Serdyukov has been summoned for questioning several times, but refused to answer questions, including those concerning an investigation against his son-in-law.

Several people have been charged and arrested in the case so far, including the former head of the ministry's property department Yevgenia Vasilyeva.

Yekaterina Smetanova, a former executive at Oboronservis and key suspect in that investigation, was detained on fraud charges last October and signed a pre-trial plea bargain agreement after her arrest.

She was recently released from custody with travel restrictions after cooperating with the investigation.

Oboronservis carries out a variety of services relating to defence ministry property, including repair and maintenance of equipment and real estate.

Wars and Rumors of War

Aug 31 2014 5:38pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The United States faces the possibility of greater involvement in two wars: one with Russia and one with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, aka the Islamic State. One is a throwback to nationalist wars of the past. The other is a worrying harbinger of the future. But for Ukraine the future is now. The Russian invasion and undermining of Ukraine continues as do the absurd denials by Russian President Vladimir P ...

S. Korea pressured to reject U.S. missile system

Aug 30 2014 8:22pm CDT | Source: WND

(Forbes) The specter of Chinese warplanes buzzing U.S. and Japanese planes adds urgency to U.S. pressure for high-altitude defense in Asia against a still more formidable threat: that of missiles fired by North Korea and maybe even China. Both the Pentagon and Japan’s defense ministry have protested the close calls with Chinese planes while China threatens still more of them and complains about U.S. dreams of installing a “Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense” system in South Korea. New Zealand: Time for a Small Country on the UN Security Council

Aug 30 2014 10:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I believe that few people could name more than five members of the UN Security Council. The U.S., Russia and China certainly. Think hard and you would probably add in the United Kingdom and -- maybe -- France, as the countries who hold the power of "nay" or "aye" over key actions of the United Nations, including how the UN addresses conflicts arising around the world. There are 10 other countries who are non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the Ge ...

Russo-Ukrainian War Now a Reality

Aug 29 2014 2:16pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Now that Russia has openly attacked Ukraine, what's next? The wait is finally over. After invading Crimea in late February, Russia has launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. According to NATO, over a 1,000 Russian soldiers have been deployed in Ukraine. The Russian Committee of Soldiers' Mothers puts the number at 15,000. A well-informed Ukrainian journalist estimates it at no fewer than 10,000 and possibly as high as 20,000. ...
