Russia probes 25 cases of defence ministry fraud

Feb 20 2013, 8:48am CST | by

Moscow, Feb 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian authorities are investigating about 25 separate instances of fraud in the widely-publicised Oboronservis case involving illegal sale of property belonging to the defence ministry, the prosecutor general said Wednesday.

Moscow, Feb 20 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian authorities are investigating about 25 separate instances of fraud in the widely-publicised Oboronservis case involving illegal sale of property belonging to the defence ministry, the prosecutor general said Wednesday.

"Some 25 separate criminal cases have been opened and combined into one probe," Yury Chaika said at a meeting with Russian lawmakers.

"The damage from these frauds adds up to about five billion rubles ($166 million)," he said, adding further damage totalling 2.3 billion rubles ($76.5 million) has been prevented and about 1 billion rubles ($33 million) have been recovered.

The investigation led to the sacking of Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov last November, who is still considered a witness in the case.

According to investigators, Serdyukov has been summoned for questioning several times, but refused to answer questions, including those concerning an investigation against his son-in-law.

Several people have been charged and arrested in the case so far, including the former head of the ministry's property department Yevgenia Vasilyeva.

Yekaterina Smetanova, a former executive at Oboronservis and key suspect in that investigation, was detained on fraud charges last October and signed a pre-trial plea bargain agreement after her arrest.

She was recently released from custody with travel restrictions after cooperating with the investigation.

Oboronservis carries out a variety of services relating to defence ministry property, including repair and maintenance of equipment and real estate.

China Attempts to Establish Itself as Head of New World Order

Sep 21 2014 4:10am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article originally appeared in The Economist. The clue is in the name. The Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) groups six countries—China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan—and aims to be the dominant security institution in its region; but its origin and purposes are largely Chinese.  So it looks rather worrying from a Western point of view that the group has agreed to expand and that India, Pakistan and Iran are all keen to join: ...

White House: Photo-Op with Ukrainian President 'Worth a Thousand Words' to Putin

Sep 18 2014 8:26am CDT | Source: Big Government

The White House is hoping that President Obama’s visit with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States stands with Ukraine. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Earnest pointed out that just the photo of the two national leaders together would send a clear message to Putin. “What’s the message to the unseen presence in the room--Mr. Putin?” asked a reporter. ...

Not a principled principal

Sep 16 2014 4:22pm CDT | Source: WND

Mr. Unruh: Having just read your article on the almost incomprehensible decision by Principal Fulmer to remove U.S. flags from the students’ vehicles, I had to quickly reread to see if this took place in Syria or Russia. Hopefully not here only 13 years later from the worst terrorist act committed on U.S. soil as thousands of families continue to grieve over their loss. I shudder to think what kind of message this Fulmer is communicating to the ...
