Spending cuts `greatest challenge' to foreign policy: Kerry

Feb 21 2013, 1:29am CST | by

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

Washington, Feb 21 — US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

"Now, I'm particularly aware that in many ways, the greatest challenge to America's foreign policy today is in the hands not of diplomats, but of policymakers in Congress," Kerry said at the University of Virginia in his first major foreign policy speech since he took oath early this month.

He urged the US politicians to avoid a "looming budget sequester", stressing "we can't be strong in the world unless we are strong at home", reported Xinhua.

Kerry's speech, widely seen as targeting the domestic audience, came as roughly $85 billion of automatic spending cuts, also known as sequester, are set to hit various US governmental departments starting March 1. The sequester was agreed by Democrats and Republicans in January to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff".

The State Department said the cuts would affect as much as $2.6 billion in aid and various other diplomatic programmes. The budget for US diplomatic operations accounts for about one percent of the total federal budget.

Kerry said that his ability to work as America's chief diplomat on the global stage depends on whether Washington can put "its own fiscal house in order".

"And that has to be now," he stressed.

"Think about it. It's hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they have to resolve their economic issues if we don't resolve our own," Kerry noted.

He called for a "responsible agreement" to prevent the "senseless cuts", warning that the opportunity cannot be missed "because of politics".

John Kerry: U.S. Won't Apologize To North Korea To Free Americans

Oct 24 2014 1:40pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday urged North Korea to release two detained Americans to build goodwill with the United States, but ruled out providing a U.S. apology to Pyongyang to win their freedom. Gary Webb Was Right

Oct 24 2014 9:01am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"Gary Webb was no journalism hero, despite what 'Kill the Messenger' says," read the recent Washington Post Op-ed headline. It's a sad sight, especially at a time when real journalism is shriveling and in retreat, including in the Washington Post news room. Once again the paper has decided to focus on discrediting a fellow journalist instead of deepening the analysis of the story he highlighted. Gary Webb put ...

Weapon of Mass Delusion: Rove Lied, Republican Brand Died

Oct 24 2014 8:36am CDT | Source: Big Government

Many people were startled when the New York Times broke an eight part story a few days ago about a Karl Rove-led cover-up of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) in Iraq -- and then The Daily Beast followed up with a report entitled "Insiders Blame Rove for Covering Up Iraq's Real WMD." The Beast even sub-titled their piece "There’s one man, some Republicans say, who kept the public from learning about th ...

In the Loop: Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns is retiring. Really, he is.

Oct 23 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

This is the week that many in the State Department hoped would never come — the week when Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns actually hung up his pinstripes. Not that it is a surprise. In April, when Burns, a 32-year Foreign Service veteran and only the second career diplomat to rise to the deputy secretary slot, announced his intent to go, Secretary of State John Kerry called him a “diplomatic legend,” comp ...

Remember When the U.S. Barred Travelers With HIV? An Ebola Ban Could be Worse.

Oct 22 2014 1:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Republican politicians, joined by a few Democrats in tight election races, have stepped up their calls in recent days for a temporary ban on all travelers coming from West Africa -- despite the fact that medical experts say such a measure is not only unnecessary but potentially harmful to efforts to stop the spread of Ebola. Why such a travel ban wouldn't work doesn't need to be speculative. In fact, for two decades, the ...

After Ignoring ISIS Assault on Kobani, US Launches Major Strikes and Arms Turkey's Kurdish Foes

Oct 22 2014 10:02am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

Earlier this month, Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would not act to prevent the Islamic State from seizing Kobani because the Syrian Kurdish town was not a "strategic objective." But as news cameras on the Turkish-Syrian border showed Islamic State fighters assaulting a town in plain sight, the U.S.-led coalition responded with the most airstrikes of its Syria campaign. The U.S.-led coalition has also begun dropping ...
