Spending cuts `greatest challenge' to foreign policy: Kerry

Feb 21 2013, 1:29am CST | by

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

Washington, Feb 21 — US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

"Now, I'm particularly aware that in many ways, the greatest challenge to America's foreign policy today is in the hands not of diplomats, but of policymakers in Congress," Kerry said at the University of Virginia in his first major foreign policy speech since he took oath early this month.

He urged the US politicians to avoid a "looming budget sequester", stressing "we can't be strong in the world unless we are strong at home", reported Xinhua.

Kerry's speech, widely seen as targeting the domestic audience, came as roughly $85 billion of automatic spending cuts, also known as sequester, are set to hit various US governmental departments starting March 1. The sequester was agreed by Democrats and Republicans in January to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff".

The State Department said the cuts would affect as much as $2.6 billion in aid and various other diplomatic programmes. The budget for US diplomatic operations accounts for about one percent of the total federal budget.

Kerry said that his ability to work as America's chief diplomat on the global stage depends on whether Washington can put "its own fiscal house in order".

"And that has to be now," he stressed.

"Think about it. It's hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they have to resolve their economic issues if we don't resolve our own," Kerry noted.

He called for a "responsible agreement" to prevent the "senseless cuts", warning that the opportunity cannot be missed "because of politics".

More to the US-Israel Spat Than Meets the Eye

Nov 1 2014 7:07am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In case you haven't noticed, the Obama Administration is in the midst of an on-going and very public spat with the Netanyahu government in Israel. The "tit for tat" exchanges have been noted in the press, with reporters and some analysts providing banal motives for the acrimony. Some have suggested "revenge" -- pointing to Netanyahu's support for Obama's 2012 rival, Mitt Romney. Others have relied on the old Washington standard -- "bad c ...

Kerry apologizes for 'chickensh*t' comment

Oct 31 2014 9:47pm CDT | Source: WND

(Times of Israel) U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday phoned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and apologized to him in the name of the Obama administration for the comments made by an anonymous US official who called the prime minister “a chickenshit.” On Thursday, Kerry had publicly distanced himself from the comments, stressing that neither he nor US President Barack Obama were behind the remarks, which he said were “disgraceful, unacceptable, and damaging.” American offic ...

War without Strategy

Oct 31 2014 11:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article by Col. Bing West originally appeared at the Hoover Institution: Forty-three percent of voters ranked the economy as the top issue in the 2014 midterm election, versus 15% who cited foreign policy.1 Yet 62% said they were very concerned about terrorism, the largest percentage polled since 2007, before the war turned around in Iraq.2  So why is the public both concerned and yet not concerned? The answer is that America’s leaders are providing no direction. O ...

President Obama's Mixed-Up Alliances: Israel v. Iran

Oct 31 2014 9:31am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Obama Administration, it seems, is very sensitive to criticism. At least, when Israelis make light of (one of) them.  In the beginning of 2014, President Obama and his Secretary of State, John Kerry, were fuming that Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaa’lon dared to deride an earlier American peace plan proposal and to ridicule Secretary Kerry in an off-the-record comment to the media: (T)he American security plan that was presented to us is not wort ...

The Nuclear Option: Democrats Win if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid Lose Power Nov. 4

Oct 30 2014 7:44pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If pollsters are to be believed, Democrats nationwide do not have much to look forward to in next week's elections. There is, however, a silver lining that stands to benefit the party and liberal-leaning voters everywhere in ways that far outweigh the anguish they might suffer on Election Day. Poised to lose control of the Senate and give up even more seats in the House, Democrats in Congress will have no choice but to finally dump House Minority L ...

Mitch McConnell told the Koch Brothers that "I don't know where we'd be without you," which was even more dramatic considering he was standing outside in the rain and yelling it at their window. Michael Jordan called the president a "shitty golfer," which is one step above being a "chickenshit golfer." And Ted Cruz bristled at Tim Cook's essay on being gay, though perhaps Cruz was expressing a deep-seated jealousy over no ...

Yesterday we learned that anonymous White House officials called Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu a coward and that he is chicken**** to a reporter from The Atlantic. And today? More anonymous White House officials and this time they insult Secretary of State John Kerry: "...Mr. Kerry is vocal and forceful in internal debates, officials said, but he frequently gets out of sync with the White House in his public statements. Kerry: 'The Cold War Was Easy Compared to Where We Are Today'

Oct 30 2014 11:34am CDT | Source: Big Government

Thursday at the Aspen Institute's "Washington Ideas Forum," Secretary of State John Kerry said the Cold War was easy in comparison to the complexity of the world today with more economic power dispersed throughout the world. "So now, you have more countries with more economic power in a globalized world," Kerry said. "They're going to automatically react and say, well, wait a minute, now. Do we really want the behemoth United States, superpower of ...
