Spending cuts `greatest challenge' to foreign policy: Kerry

Feb 21 2013, 1:29am CST | by

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

Washington, Feb 21 — US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

"Now, I'm particularly aware that in many ways, the greatest challenge to America's foreign policy today is in the hands not of diplomats, but of policymakers in Congress," Kerry said at the University of Virginia in his first major foreign policy speech since he took oath early this month.

He urged the US politicians to avoid a "looming budget sequester", stressing "we can't be strong in the world unless we are strong at home", reported Xinhua.

Kerry's speech, widely seen as targeting the domestic audience, came as roughly $85 billion of automatic spending cuts, also known as sequester, are set to hit various US governmental departments starting March 1. The sequester was agreed by Democrats and Republicans in January to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff".

The State Department said the cuts would affect as much as $2.6 billion in aid and various other diplomatic programmes. The budget for US diplomatic operations accounts for about one percent of the total federal budget.

Kerry said that his ability to work as America's chief diplomat on the global stage depends on whether Washington can put "its own fiscal house in order".

"And that has to be now," he stressed.

"Think about it. It's hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they have to resolve their economic issues if we don't resolve our own," Kerry noted.

He called for a "responsible agreement" to prevent the "senseless cuts", warning that the opportunity cannot be missed "because of politics".

Why Can't Obama Enforce Peace Between Palestine and Israel?

Jul 31 2014 9:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Not long ago, perhaps less than a decade ago, I was one of those Iranians who view Palestinians as terrorists and opportunists. As somebody who was born and raised in Iran, I can confidently tell you that this view is prevalent there; there are many Iranians who view Palestinians in this way. Tehran is one of the biggest supporters of the Palestinian Hamas movement, and of Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, and ultimately it is ...

Analysis: U.S. Failures in Gaza Make Israel-Iran War More Likely

Jul 31 2014 8:24am CDT | Source: Big Government

Amidst the many foreign policy stumbles--and occasional successes--of the Obama administration, there have been few as embarrassing as the failure in the ongoing Gaza conflict. No agency has been spared. The State Department has looked worst of all, with John Kerry's failed ceasefire mission that alienated all relevant parties. The Pentagon provided weapons, but its intelligence assessments have been absurd. And the President, who took Israel to the UN S ...
