Spending cuts `greatest challenge' to foreign policy: Kerry

Feb 21 2013, 1:29am CST | by

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

Washington, Feb 21 — US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

"Now, I'm particularly aware that in many ways, the greatest challenge to America's foreign policy today is in the hands not of diplomats, but of policymakers in Congress," Kerry said at the University of Virginia in his first major foreign policy speech since he took oath early this month.

He urged the US politicians to avoid a "looming budget sequester", stressing "we can't be strong in the world unless we are strong at home", reported Xinhua.

Kerry's speech, widely seen as targeting the domestic audience, came as roughly $85 billion of automatic spending cuts, also known as sequester, are set to hit various US governmental departments starting March 1. The sequester was agreed by Democrats and Republicans in January to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff".

The State Department said the cuts would affect as much as $2.6 billion in aid and various other diplomatic programmes. The budget for US diplomatic operations accounts for about one percent of the total federal budget.

Kerry said that his ability to work as America's chief diplomat on the global stage depends on whether Washington can put "its own fiscal house in order".

"And that has to be now," he stressed.

"Think about it. It's hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they have to resolve their economic issues if we don't resolve our own," Kerry noted.

He called for a "responsible agreement" to prevent the "senseless cuts", warning that the opportunity cannot be missed "because of politics".

Sowing seeds of our own destruction

Aug 29 2014 6:10pm CDT | Source: WND

The American people had better wake up! Our so-called leaders, President Barack Hussein Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, with the end of the latest Israeli-Hamas war, are about to resume their slick, under-the-table scheme to fund Hamas with U.S. dollars, allegedly earmarked for humanitarian purposes. As explained in excruciating detail in a complaint I filed Thursday against these criminals (see FreedomWatchUSA.org), Obama and company – and let’s also throw the ...

According to Earnest, Obama was referring to particulars that he could take to Congress for authorization and that the Obama White House does indeed have a game plan. “What the president was talk ...

A Republican study finds the GOP's in trouble with female voters, so we expect future campaigns to focus on deporting women. Hillary Clinton spoke out on Ferguson, wisely waiting until there was no risk of sniper fire. And Mitch McConnell tried to tamp down fears of another government shutdown, saying, "The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-shutdown president." This is HUFFPOST HILL for Thursday, August 28 ...

Afghanistan's Election Becomes a Farce -- And a US Policy Disaster

Aug 28 2014 11:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

It's hard to pinpoint the exact moment when Afghanistan's presidential election became a complete absurdity. With a US-brokered audit process of the election already behind schedule, and with outgoing president Hamid Karzai declaring September 2 as the swearing-in day for the country's next leader, the election process suffered yet another blow on Wednesday when Abdullah Abdullah, a for ...
