Spending cuts `greatest challenge' to foreign policy: Kerry

Feb 21 2013, 1:29am CST | by

Washington, Feb 21 (IANS) US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

Washington, Feb 21 — US Secretary of State John Kerry has called the looming spending cuts as the "greatest challenge" to America's foreign policy.

"Now, I'm particularly aware that in many ways, the greatest challenge to America's foreign policy today is in the hands not of diplomats, but of policymakers in Congress," Kerry said at the University of Virginia in his first major foreign policy speech since he took oath early this month.

He urged the US politicians to avoid a "looming budget sequester", stressing "we can't be strong in the world unless we are strong at home", reported Xinhua.

Kerry's speech, widely seen as targeting the domestic audience, came as roughly $85 billion of automatic spending cuts, also known as sequester, are set to hit various US governmental departments starting March 1. The sequester was agreed by Democrats and Republicans in January to resolve the so-called "fiscal cliff".

The State Department said the cuts would affect as much as $2.6 billion in aid and various other diplomatic programmes. The budget for US diplomatic operations accounts for about one percent of the total federal budget.

Kerry said that his ability to work as America's chief diplomat on the global stage depends on whether Washington can put "its own fiscal house in order".

"And that has to be now," he stressed.

"Think about it. It's hard to tell the leadership of any number of countries that they have to resolve their economic issues if we don't resolve our own," Kerry noted.

He called for a "responsible agreement" to prevent the "senseless cuts", warning that the opportunity cannot be missed "because of politics".

'Life on Earth ends' if climate skeptics wrong

Oct 13 2014 1:33pm CDT | Source: WND

(CNSNEWS) — “Life as you know it on Earth ends” if climate change skeptics are wrong, Sec. of State John Kerry declared Thursday. But, even if climate alarmists are wrong, nothing bad can come of enacting their taxes, restrictions and regulations, Kerry said in a speech at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center: “I’d just say to all of you here that people need to feel the pressure from you. You all know what politics is about. I’m not in it ...

Does America Have a Foreign Policy?

Oct 13 2014 10:37am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sadly, the answer is 'no.' We have not had one since Barack Obama entered the Oval Office six years ago. That does not mean that his actions have been worse than his Bush predecessor's or that he has made more mistakes. That depends in good part on one's preferences and angle of vision. What it does mean is that the United States' external relations have not been guided by a comprehensive strategy based on a conception of our place in the world an ...

Bringing the Ebola war home

Oct 12 2014 3:50pm CDT | Source: WND

Back in the days of the Vietnam War, those of us who were on the wrong side – like John Kerry and Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland – were eager to “bring the war home.” That became the mantra of the political left – “bring the war home.” The idea was to make ordinary American citizens feel the effects of the war so they would quickly demand an unconditional withdrawal, setting the stage of a Communist victory – which they ultimately got. I wa ...
