Damascus, Feb 21 — At least 16 people were killed and 208 wounded Thursday when a suicide bomber blew up a car packed with explosives at a busy intersection close to the ruling al-Baath Party headquarters in capital Damascus, the state media reported.

The blast rocked a crowded intersection, the state-media and witnesses said.

The state-TV aired footage of the blast site, showing images of destruction and carnage, reported Xinhua.

Charred bodies were also seen scattered on burnt concrete as firefighters and paramedics worked feverishly to help the injured to hospitals.

After the blast, the authorities arrested another would-be suicide bomber who was driving a car rigged with explosives in the same area.

The explosion was felt nearly two km around the area, shattering glass in nearby buildings and sending ominous smoke plume above the city center.

The blast was also followed with heavy gunfire as the authorities cordoned off the area and closed main routes to central Damascus.

Blasts and mortar attacks have become increasingly common in Syria as the rebels scaled up their attacks to wobble the regime's grip on power.

How Climate Change Helped ISIS

Sep 29 2014 4:42pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As the Obama administration undertakes a highly public, multilateral campaign to degrade and destroy the militant jihadists known as ISIS, ISIL and the Islamic State, many in the West remain unaware that climate played a significant role in the rise of Syria's extremists. A historic drought afflicted the country from 2006 through 2010, setting off a dire humanitarian crisis for millions of Syrians. Yet the four-year drought evoked little response from Bashar al-Assad's governm ...

Lebanon: The Forgotten Front

Sep 27 2014 8:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

While the world's attention has been focused on the combined efforts of Arab and U.S. forces attacking "Islamic State" (IS) positions in Iraq and Syria, there is unfolding in Lebanon, a third front in the war against this violent extremist group. This third front has received scant attention. Because Lebanon has been so overwhelmed by the fallout from Syria's civil war, aggravat ...

Syria: Defeat IS and Then What?

Sep 24 2014 9:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Syria is again in the news, due mostly to the recent round of American and coalition (who exactly?) air strikes against 20 odd IS targets in North and East Syria. While this may be the more dramatic piece of news about the war-torn country, once daubed the ''heart of Arabism," a lot more is happening. First, the fighting on the Syrian side of the Golan border with Israel is developing against the Assad regime, and with it the serious possibility that the rebels will be able to at ...

A report from the Associated Press claims Washington officials--and particularly Secretary of State John Kerry--alerted Syria of pending strikes before they began last night.  Syrian officials had warned that any surprise strikes on its soil had to "be coordinated with Damascus or else they would be considered an act of aggression against Syria and a breach of its sovereignty."  According to the AP, Syria's Foreign Min ...
