India seeks greater cooperation with US in terrorism, defence

Feb 21 2013, 1:03pm CST | by

Washington, Feb 22 (IANS) India Thursday suggested greater cooperation with the US in seven key areas ranging from terrorism, defence and enhanced trade to support in multilateral fora as they take their strategic partnership forward.

Washington, Feb 22 — India Thursday suggested greater cooperation with the US in seven key areas ranging from terrorism, defence and enhanced trade to support in multilateral fora as they take their strategic partnership forward.

"From our perspective, closer and more effective cooperation between us on terrorism is critical," said Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai as he began consultations with his American counterparts on a range of bilateral and regional issues.

"Obviously, this has an impact on our bilateral and trilateral consultations on Afghanistan and the region," he said in an address on "A 21st Century India-United States Partnership for Peace, Prosperity and Progress" at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Noting that the "relationship between us must now stand squarely on its own merits, Mathai said: "As you re-calibrate your presence in Afghanistan, we hope that the transformation of our relationship can accelerate, based on the unique merits of what each side brings to the table."

Suggesting that defence cooperation between the two countries should be "part of the new normal," Mathai said: "We can do so by finding simple process solutions to enable your defence companies to make value-for-money bids to meet our defence."

As both countries need significant investment in industry and manufacture and the jobs that they create, "we must find ways to work more closely together in this context", he said.

"We cannot allow the differences we have in trade in goods or movement of services to dominate the discourse," Mathai said.

"At the same time, we have to create forums to discuss these issues openly and with a forward-looking approach."

Energy and education too are strategic openings for the US to invest in the future of India, he said.

Mathai and his team of officials are having day-long consultation with top American officials including a meeting with the new Secretary of State John Kerry at the State Department.

Reconciling South Asia's Hindus and Muslims

Jul 28 2014 10:03am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A new government has taken office in India a couple of months ago, a government that was voted in to majority on the backs of a coalescence of Hindu support, the first ever instance in the country's history. The prime minister has the reputation of being right-wing, which in India means, in part, being unfavorable to the country's Muslim minority but has promised to treat all communities equally. Even so, t ...

Can India Achieve Financial Inclusion within the Next Few Years?

Jul 23 2014 12:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The new Government of India has made financial inclusion one of the corner stones in its modernization aspirations for the country. In his first budget speech earlier this month, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley set the target of a financial account for each woman and each man in every Indian household by August 2015. This ambitious target is a recognition of how important access to basic financial transaction services -- and ultimately to better savings, credit and insurance options - ...

What Prof. Piketty Missed

Jul 22 2014 1:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Prof. Thomas Piketty's book, Capital for the Twenty-First Century, certainly has stirred up plenty of debate and political posturing. Progressives have seized on his careful examination of widening income inequalities to advance an agenda of higher taxes and more income redistribution. Conservatives have criticized his data, his analysis, and, where they acknowledge an income gap, have questioned whether his solutions would help. In al ...

U.S.-Africa Leaders' Summit: Let's Ensure it's on the Positive Side of History

Jul 20 2014 7:52pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

If you are an Africa-hand, activist or development partner, you are either directly or indirectly involved with the upcoming Washington, D.C. August 4-6, 2014, U.S.-Africa Leaders' Summit. Fundamentally, the event is incredibly historic as it will be the first time that a sitting U.S. president has invited all the leaders of the Africa Region to a single event (with the exceptions of Zimbabwe, Central Africa Republic, Eritrea, a ...

New BRICS Bank a Building Block of Alternative World Order

Jul 18 2014 2:12pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The past several years have been rocky for the BRICS economies -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Brazil's growth forecast was slashed considerably as the commodities super-cycle slowed, Russia's political misadventures dragged down its reserves, India's currency took a major beating as its debt levels climbed above the market's appetite, and South Africa has been wracked by corruption and labor unrest. Only Chi ...
