Kerry, who took office Feb 1 to succeed Hillary Clinton, will visit Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

The conflicts in Mali, Syria and Afghanistan will top Kerry's agenda, Xinhua cited the State Department as saying.

In London, his first stop, Kerry will meet senior British officials to discuss a range of bilateral and global issues the two allies are closely coordinating, the department said.

In Berlin, he will discuss issues of mutual interest and make a number of public appearances, including an exchange of views with German youth on the state of European-American relations.

Kerry will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the German capital over "a wide range" of bilateral and international issues, with focus expected on Syria.

In Paris, Kerry will discuss with senior French officials the ongoing military intervention in Mali spearheaded by the French military.

During his stay in Rome, the US Secretary of State will participate in a number of bilateral and multilateral meetings with European allies to review the "wider transatlantic relationship" and discuss issues of global concern.

Kerry will also participate in multilateral meetings on Syria and meet the leaders of the Syrian Opposition Coalition.

In Turkey's capital Ankara, he will discuss the "strategic priorities" between the two NATO allies, including the crisis in Syria, regional stability, peace and security as well as counterterrorism cooperation.

In Cairo, he will meet government officials, political leaders, civil society leaders and the business community to encourage "greater political consensus" and moving forward on economic reforms.

He will also meet Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby to consult "on our many shared challenges across the region", the State Department said.

In the Loop: Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns is retiring. Really, he is.

Oct 23 2014 11:00am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

This is the week that many in the State Department hoped would never come — the week when Deputy Secretary of State Bill Burns actually hung up his pinstripes. Not that it is a surprise. Remember When the U.S. Barred Travelers With HIV? An Ebola Ban Could be Worse.

Oct 22 2014 1:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Republican politicians, joined by a few Democrats in tight election races, have stepped up their calls in recent days for a temporary ban on all travelers coming from West Africa -- despite the fact that medical experts say such a measure is not only unnecessary but potentially harmful to efforts to stop the spread of Ebola. Why such a travel ban wouldn't work doesn't need to be speculative. In fact, for two decades, the United ...

After Ignoring ISIS Assault on Kobani, US Launches Major Strikes and Arms Turkey's Kurdish Foes

Oct 22 2014 10:02am CDT | Source: Truthout Stories

Earlier this month, Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would not act to prevent the Islamic State from seizing Kobani because the Syrian Kurdish town was not a "strategic objective." But as news cameras on the Turkish-Syrian border showed Islamic State fighters assaulting a town in plain sight, the U.S.-led coalition responded with the most airstrikes of its Syria campaign. ISIS Is a Cult That Uses Terrorism: A Fresh New Strategy

Oct 21 2014 9:29pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Who is drawn to join violent terrorist groups and why? Could it be the violence itself? Last week The New York Times suggested that the group calling itself Islamic State has adopted a 'cult of sadism' -- using its brutal images of rapes, crucifixions and beheadings to attract throngs of willing followers. Australian prime minister Tony Abbott called the group, also known as ISIS, 'an apocalyptic death cult.' John Kerry, among the first to use the term, cal ...
