Best film Oscar for 'Argo' upsets Iran

Tehran, Feb 25 (IANS) The best film Oscar for the CIA thriller "Argo" has riled Iran, which says the award has unveiled the "bare politicization in Hollywood".

Tehran, Feb 25 — The best film Oscar for the CIA thriller "Argo" has riled Iran, which says the award has unveiled the "bare politicization in Hollywood".

"In the era that politicization in Hollywood was very strong, and every awards and festivals in Hollywood had paid much attention to the anti-Iranian movie 'Argo', the 85th Academy Awards ceremony, unveiled the bare politicization in Hollywood," said mehrnews.com.

US First Lady Michelle Obama introduced the nominations and the winner via a video conference from White House. The team of "Argo" - co-producers Grant Heslov, Ben Affleck and George Clooney - collected the trophy at the function in Los Angeles Sunday night.

"Argo", set in the 1970s, talks about CIA 'exfiltration' specialist Tony Mendez (Affleck), who concocts a risky plan to free six Americans from Iran.

The Iranian news agency cited movie critics as saying that "Lincoln" was the best film of the year to win the Oscar.

"The Academy Awards ceremony to present the Oscar for the best picture 'Argo' by Ben Affleck revealed that Hollywood insiders are sacrificing quality and artistic cinema to political slogans and distortions," it said.

It noted that Hollywood has been "an instrument for the US politicians to use it for their political purposes, not based on reality, but one-sided and distorted, to present to the world".

"Interestingly, in the current Academy Awards ceremony, presence of Michelle Obama was even surprising for the audience," it added.

This showed the "bare Hollywood scandals and politicization of the 85th Academy Awards ceremony".

"Argo" was among nine films vying in the category. The others were "Amour", "Beasts of the Southern Wild", "Django Unchained", "Les Miserables", "Life of Pi", "Lincoln", "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Zero Dark Thirty".

The Fix: Oops: Elizabeth Warren mixes up Vermont and New Hampshire

Oct 28 2014 12:27pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama called Bruce Braley  Bruce "Bailey." And then the first lady mucked up just how long Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) has been a Coloradan. For sports fans and American drinkers everywhere, it's the most wonderful time of the year: football season. But on top of celebrating every Sunday through February, we really should be applauding Franklin D. Roosevelt. The NFL may not sell Roosevelt jerseys, but FDR charged through and intercepted Prohibition. In one of his early "fireside chats," he won cheers from thirsty citizens by stating: "I think this wo ...

NYU Associate Professor Thuy Linh Tu argued that media coverage First Lady Michelle Obama’s arms shows “we’re always a little bit uncomfortable with a strong woman,” during a discussion on the late fashion designer Oscar de la Renta on MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry.” “The thing about Michelle Obama's arms is, everybody talks about it. On Thursday Iowa Republican Senate candidate Joni Ernst decided to skip a meeting with The Des Moines Register's editorial board saying that the paper has so favored her opponent that her time would be better spent campaigning. This prompted a Register columnist to attack the Republican on social media. But what validates Ernst's point is that the columnist's son works for opponent Bruce Braley, the Democrat's Senate candidate. The Des Moines paper has without a doub ...
