Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley lead Republican charge against Obama

Washington, Feb 26 (IANS) With no deal in sight on mandated across-the-board forced spending cuts, President Barack Obama painted a grim picture only to be accused by Republicans, led by two Indian-American governors, of scaremongering.

Washington, Feb 26 — With no deal in sight on mandated across-the-board forced spending cuts, President Barack Obama painted a grim picture only to be accused by Republicans, led by two Indian-American governors, of scaremongering.

"While you are in town, I hope that you speak with your congressional delegation and remind them in no uncertain terms exactly what is at stake and exactly who is at risk," Obama Monday told state governors gathered in Washington.

"Because here's the thing. These cuts do not have to happen. Congress can turn them off any time with just a little bit of compromise."

The President's plea to the National Governors Association at the White House was part of his latest push to pressure Congress to avoid what is called 'sequestration' - $85 billion in spending cuts this year and $1.2 trillion through fiscal 2021 - that kicks in Friday.

Part of a 2011 deal to increase America's debt limit, the cuts, half in defence and half in non-defence programmes, were deliberately designed to be painful to make the Congress act on the nation's mounting deficit.

Leading the critics charge that the White House is exaggerating the potential impact of the budget slashing, Louisiana's Indian-American Governor Bobby Jindal told reporters: "Enough's enough."

"The president needs to stop campaigning, stop trying to scare the American people, stop trying to scare states," said Jindal, a potential 2016 presidential candidate.

Asking the president to "show leadership," he said if the cuts were "truly devastating," then the administration should cut future programmes, such as Obama's signature healthcare measures, rather than chisel away at existing programmes.

In the same vein, South Carolina's Indian-American governor Nikki Haley dubbed Washington as "psychotic" as she criticised federal lawmakers for letting partisan bickering get in the way of balancing the budget.

"I could not be more frustrated than I am right now. How many more times are the governors going to have to pick up the mess of Washington, D.C.?"

"How many more times are we going to have to deal with these issues over and over again because of the finger pointing and the blame game that keeps on happening in Washington?" she asked.

In an obvious swipe against a week long holiday taken by the Congress in the midst of the looming crisis, and Obama's Presidents Day golf weekend in Florida, Haley said: "No one should be going home. No one should be playing golf. No one should be taking vacations."

"What they need to do is do what these governors do everyday," she continued. "We stay until we get it done."

Planned Parenthood's Very Bad Year Keeps Getting Worse

Sep 9 2014 1:37pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Poor Planned Parenthood. America's largest abortion provider is having a very bad year and thanks to a Republican proposal to make birth control available over the counter, it could be getting even worse. Despite the President himself siding with no safeguards on abortion to a degree that would surely have pleased Kermit Gosnell, many states have implemented laws making it tougher for abortionists to ply th ...

Civil disobedience occurred in Missouri this week, but it was black civil disobedience, so there was no DHS presence. “It’s very important to understand ...

Romney May Still Not Be the Republican Party Favorite

Aug 29 2014 11:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Headlines claimed that Americans want Romney back. But despite a recent poll touting his comeback, more evidence is needed to show that even Republicans want their losing nominee from 2012 back. Nearly a month ago, a poll showed that New Hampshire GOP voters gave Romney the nod in picking who they wanted to win in 2016. So what did Iowans think? Those who want Romney back crowed that a new USA Today/Suffolk poll of 206 Iowans found that 72 (35 percent) of them preferred the on ...

Obama Administration Punishes Oklahoma for Repealing Common Core Standards

Aug 28 2014 8:32pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The U.S. Department of Education (USED) has punished the state of Oklahoma for repealing the Common Core standards and reverting to its previous academic standards by rescinding the state’s waiver from No Child Left Behind (NCLB), making it the second state ever to lose its waiver from the law. As Caitlin Emma of Politico reports, Indiana, on the contrary, was granted a one-year extension of its waiver from NCLB because, th ...

Here's your ticket out of Common Core

Aug 27 2014 6:59pm CDT | Source: WND

Common Core math problem The Common Core school standards imposed on teachers by Washington bureaucrats have been rejected by multiple states, targeted by lawsuits and criticized as more indoctrination than education. Now parents are being given a turn to take a whack at the one-size-fits-all program that relegates George Washington to a half a sentence and compares the Declaration of Independence to a high-school romance breakup letter. The Michigan-based Thomas More ...

Mike Huckabee: 'Stop The Fight' Over Common Core, Consider Its Benefits

Aug 22 2014 12:59pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Conservatives should "stop the fight" over Common Core and instead consider the benefits that the academic standards offer students in struggling schools, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Friday. The position puts him at odds with a significant bloc of Republicans. Huckabee, who unsuccessfully sought the GOP presidential nomination in 2008 and is considering a 2016 run, acknowledged the standard ...

States Escaping No Child Left Behind Will Get More Time On Teacher Evaluations

Aug 21 2014 11:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For years, the Obama administration has made tougher teacher evaluations a centerpiece of its education agenda, giving states incentives to grade educators partially in accordance with students' standardized test scores. But on Thursday, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced most states will get a reprieve of sorts. Deborah Delisle, assistant secretary of elementary and secondary education, wrote in a Thursday letter to state school chiefs tha ...
