Strategic balance of forces being disrupted: Putin

Feb 27 2013, 3:10pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Speaking Wednesday at a meeting with senior military staff at the Russian defense ministry, Putin said: "Systematic attempts are being made from the outside to disrupt the strategic balance in this or that manner.

"In fact, the second stage of the US global missile defense system is being launched, and the possibilities for further NATO eastward expansion are being explored."

"The danger of the militarisation of the Arctic also persists," he added.

Putin said those challenges affect Russia's national interests and determine the priorities of its foreign policy.

Moscow has consistently opposed NATO's US-led missile defense programme for Europe, claiming it undermines Russia's nuclear deterrent. NATO maintains the programme is aimed at emerging nuclear weapon states such as Iran and North Korea.

The 'Good' Iraq War? 5 Things to Consider Before We March Into Another Mideast Quagmire

Sep 16 2014 7:09pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

ISIS is a bad bunch. A deliberately macabre and diabolical death cult. Their shock and horror strategy fuels fear in their subjects, and pride in their growing band of messianic losers, freaks and disaffected Ba'athists (thank you, Douglas Feith). However, in many ways, they are no different than other marauding bands of bad guys around the planet: from Uganda's (now possibly Congo's) Acholi-Christian-Islamic madman Joseph ...

The Russian government has announced it will "protect" Russian speakers abroad, specifically mentioning the Russian-speaking population of the Baltics. This is not the first time Russia has hinted that it would involve itself in the affairs of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia since Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March. Konstantin Dolgov, Russia’s foreign ministry chief monitor of human righ ...

What would Braveheart do?

Sep 15 2014 7:27pm CDT | Source: WND

No matter how the vote turns out on Thursday in Scotland, either for independence or continued union with Britain, the disintegration of the Old Continent appears almost inevitable. Already the British government has conceded that, even if the Scots vote for union, Edinburgh will receive greater powers to rule itself. Cheering for the breakup of the U.K. are Catalans and Basques, Bretons and Corsicans, Tyrolean ...

Saudis drop idea of toppling Syrian regime

Sep 14 2014 7:36pm CDT | Source: WND

Syria’s Bashar al-Assad WASHINGTON – The Saudis are telling Russia they no longer seek to topple the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, but insist they should continue arming and training their surrogates in the Free Syrian Army as opposition to ISIS – even though FSA commanders have signed a non-aggression pact with ISIS. Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal reportedly gave the news to Russian President Vladimir Putin, a staunch defender of the Assad regime. However, Middle East sources regard t ...

Obama Ditches Presidency to Become Commentator-in-Chief

Sep 14 2014 3:09pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Sunday, The New York Times revealed that President Obama seems to be feeling criticism from those who believe his foreign policy has fallen to shambles. “He’s definitely feeling it,” one guest said to the Times. The paper reported, “It was clear to guests how aware Mr. Obama was of the critics who have charged him with demonstrating a lack of leadership. He brought up the criticism more than once with an edge of resentment in his voice.” And ye ...

Obama's Last Chance to Control His Credibility

Sep 11 2014 7:52pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama has a precious opportunity to carve out a legacy for himself and carry out a coup against the reputation of weakness, repudiation and retreat that has dogged and haunted him. The Islamic State (IS) had invited the U.S. president to a war, which has opened a window for Barack Obama to shape his own fate rather than leaving his historical political legacy in the hands of others. If he shows boldness and acts decisively from a position of strength and leverage, President ...

Why they hate you Americans

Sep 11 2014 6:36pm CDT | Source: WND

“Why do they hate us?” It’s a question Americans often ask me, a non-American. This question is renewed with each anniversary of the fateful September morning that saw evil rock the cradle of liberty. It is a perfectly legitimate question, yet one that yields vastly different answers. An Arab will answer it differently than a Frenchman, and a socialist differently than an atheist. But in all of their answers, divergent as they may appear, there is glue. Of course, many foreigners ad ...

The Donald's solution

Sep 11 2014 6:35pm CDT | Source: WND

On the day after Barack Obama’s dismal speech concerning ISIS, many Americans are desperately in search for a solution to the “O” problem – the Obama problem. Surely we can do better. By now it is clear to all who will see that Barack Obama is unsuited to be commander in chief of the United States, or to be in any position of influence that requires native intelligence and at least some common sense. Taking responsibility is ...
