Strategic balance of forces being disrupted: Putin

Feb 27 2013, 3:10pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Speaking Wednesday at a meeting with senior military staff at the Russian defense ministry, Putin said: "Systematic attempts are being made from the outside to disrupt the strategic balance in this or that manner.

"In fact, the second stage of the US global missile defense system is being launched, and the possibilities for further NATO eastward expansion are being explored."

"The danger of the militarisation of the Arctic also persists," he added.

Putin said those challenges affect Russia's national interests and determine the priorities of its foreign policy.

Moscow has consistently opposed NATO's US-led missile defense programme for Europe, claiming it undermines Russia's nuclear deterrent. NATO maintains the programme is aimed at emerging nuclear weapon states such as Iran and North Korea.

Oct 28 2014 2:14pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Another ObamaCare enrollment period is upon us, which means the accumulated trove of personal data stored in the glitchy HealthCareDotGov website will become an even more tempting target for hackers.  The test servers got hacked a while back, without anyone realizing it for almost two months... a development the Administration was not exactly eager to discuss with the public.  But at least they learned from the experienced and fixed all the ...

Oct 27 2014 6:22am CDT | Source: Big Government

An Australian climate change lobby group has faced a backlash after creating a billboard advert comparing coal miners to paedophiles. The ad was one of a number of possible images posted onto the Facebook page of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition as part of a competition to choose a poster to be displayed at Brisbane airport next month when world leaders fly in to meet for the G20 Summit, but was pulled from the site after followers ...

Many Questions Loom Ahead of Ukrainian Elections

Oct 24 2014 6:54pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This Sunday, October 26th, Ukrainians will elect a new Parliament, continuing Ukraine's democratic process despite an undeclared war in the east of the country. The current Parliament, elected in October 2012, remains largely a holdover from the regime of former President Victor Yanukovych. At Yanukovych's request, this Parliament passed "dictatorship laws" that escalated the violence during the Euromaidan ...

The Russians Aren't Marching, The Russians Aren't Marching!

Oct 24 2014 11:39am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The municipal authorities in Moscow this week denied the right to free assembly to a group of Russian ultranationalists who organize the annual (deep) soul-searching extravaganza known as "The Russian March." "Senseless and merciless," the Russian March usually covers multiple cities, delivering the greatest spectacle of all in Moscow, where else, as the capital shakes and wiggles under the feet of thousands of moderate, radical, or confused Starbucks-drin ...

Obama's Fighting A New Kind Of War -- While Critics Are Stuck in the Past

Oct 21 2014 1:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Critics of Obama's war strategy seem to want him to fight a new kind of war with old weapons. As I described last time, they judge success and failure by traditional measures -- in particular, by who controls how much ground. But in a new kind of war -- counterinsurgency -- such measures don't always apply, at least not in the same way. Think about all the anxiety over how much territory ISIS currently holds, and the calls for U.S. ...

ISIS, Ukraine, the South China Sea and the End of the Era of American Power

Oct 20 2014 12:53am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A colleague called me during the run-up to the Iraq war in March 2003. It is going to be unlike anything the world has ever seen. Shock and Awe. The war will be over before it starts. An inside player in the Bush administration, he was in a position to know what was in store. Shock and Awe is a the military doctrine that "focuses on the psychological destruction of the enemy's will to fight rather than the physical destruction of its military forces ...
