Strategic balance of forces being disrupted: Putin

Feb 27 2013, 3:10pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Speaking Wednesday at a meeting with senior military staff at the Russian defense ministry, Putin said: "Systematic attempts are being made from the outside to disrupt the strategic balance in this or that manner.

"In fact, the second stage of the US global missile defense system is being launched, and the possibilities for further NATO eastward expansion are being explored."

"The danger of the militarisation of the Arctic also persists," he added.

Putin said those challenges affect Russia's national interests and determine the priorities of its foreign policy.

Moscow has consistently opposed NATO's US-led missile defense programme for Europe, claiming it undermines Russia's nuclear deterrent. NATO maintains the programme is aimed at emerging nuclear weapon states such as Iran and North Korea.

The Myth of a Post-Racial America

Aug 28 2014 8:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The election of Barack Obama was the Lexington and Concord in the latest great battle of race in America. We are a nation at war with itself. For all of our desire to move beyond the narrow confines of many of the events of our tragic history, we cannot. The president's election gave new life to what had been lying dangerously dormant for the better part of 50 years. Perhaps it's an unspoken concerted effort to keep race as a c ...

Has Hillary ever been right?

Aug 28 2014 6:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Sen. Rand Paul raises an interesting question: When has Hillary Clinton ever been right on foreign policy? The valkyrie of the Democratic Party says she urged President Obama to do more to aid Syrian rebels years ago. And last summer, she supported air strikes on Bashar Assad’s regime. Had we followed her advice and crippled Assad’s army, ISIS might be in Damascus today, butchering Christians and Alawites and aiding the Islamic State in Iraq in overrunning Baghdad. ...

Why Russia Wants the Federalization of Ukraine

Aug 28 2014 12:08pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Just a few days after German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Minsk to discuss a political solution to the crisis in the Donbas, Russian regular forces launched a full-scale invasion of eastern Ukraine. The Kremlin continues to deny that Russian soldiers are fighting -- and dying -- in Ukraine, even though the Committee of Soldiers' Mo ...

Can Abdullah Gül Save Turkish Democracy?

On Thursday, Abdullah Gül, Turkey's last indirectly elected president, will leave office after seven years. Officially, he'll have no role in either Turkey's government or in the Justice and Development Party (AKP) that his successor, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, leads and that Gül himself co-founded with Erdoğan in 2001. John McCain: Bomb Assad Yesterday, Bomb Jihadists Today

Aug 26 2014 1:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The swift and dramatic rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and the group's de facto transformation from a terrorist organization into a terrorist government with a potent army is daunting and scary. But it's not totally unexpected. Last year's study produced by IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre's Charles Lister, currently a fellow at the Brookings Doha Center, said that secular groups were no longer at the helm of Syria's ...

MINSK/KIEV, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Ukraine released a video of captured Russian soldiers on Tuesday, sharply escalating a dispute over Moscow's alleged backing for separatist rebels in the east of the former Soviet republic.
