Strategic balance of forces being disrupted: Putin

Feb 27 2013, 3:10pm CST | by

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Moscow, Feb 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Russian President Vladimir Putin has said systematic attempts are being made to undermine the existing strategic balance of forces.

Speaking Wednesday at a meeting with senior military staff at the Russian defense ministry, Putin said: "Systematic attempts are being made from the outside to disrupt the strategic balance in this or that manner.

"In fact, the second stage of the US global missile defense system is being launched, and the possibilities for further NATO eastward expansion are being explored."

"The danger of the militarisation of the Arctic also persists," he added.

Putin said those challenges affect Russia's national interests and determine the priorities of its foreign policy.

Moscow has consistently opposed NATO's US-led missile defense programme for Europe, claiming it undermines Russia's nuclear deterrent. NATO maintains the programme is aimed at emerging nuclear weapon states such as Iran and North Korea.

Rand Paul Blames America First

Sep 2 2014 8:28am CDT | Source: Big Government

An ironic trait of non-interventionists is how much they overestimate America’s impact abroad.  It is something they share with many foreign opponents of U.S. power.  It is also a fundamental assumption of Sen. Rand Paul’s foreign policy. Last week, Paul boasted in an op-ed about a previous op-ed in which he pondered if the ouster of Syrian dictator Assad would actually encourage instability.  At issue was whether the United States should have suppo ...

Faux War

Sep 1 2014 7:10pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

War, children, is just a shot away, it's just a shot away. Paul Simon, Gimme Shelter (1969) Wars can, of course, be started quite by accident. They can be started because the warriors on one side or the other are overly enthusiastic about what they are doing and their enthusiasm leads them to do things that may have unintended consequences. They can also be started because one side or the other lacks a sense of direction and accidentally invades another country. ...

Putin's push in Arctic Ocean

Sep 1 2014 5:10pm CDT | Source: WND

While the world’s attention was distracted by his incursions into eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin quietly made another provocative move that could lead to a direct confrontation with the United States. The Russian Navy sent a ship to remote Wrangel Island, planted a Russian naval flag on Aug. 20, and announced plans to build a naval base there for Russia’s Pacific Fleet. Wrangel Island is a frozen, nearly uninhabited island i ...

Why President Obama's Visit to Estonia Really Matters

Sep 1 2014 4:37pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This post was co-authored with András Simonyi. President Obama's brief stopover in Tallinn en route to the NATO Summit in Wales this week couldn't have been be any timelier. Showing up in person matters a lot to the Balts who are increasingly feeling the heat after Russia's invasion of Crimea and subsequent aggression in Eastern Ukraine. But besides reaffirming strong U.S. support for the security of its Baltic allies, Obama should also praise Estonia, Latvia a ...

Romney Blast Hillary and Obama for "Bend Over Backward" Appeasement

Aug 31 2014 12:54pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mitt Romney appeared on WNYM's "The Cats Round Table" with John Catsimatidis today and had some harsh words for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama when it came to foreign policy. "Hillary Clinton and her boss Barack Obama were extraordinarily naive and misguided in describing a 'reset' with Russia—her smiling ear-to-ear with a big red button that says 'reset' on it, giving it to the Russian Foreign Ministe ...

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Senate Foreign Relations chairman Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) blasted President Barack Obama's inaction against Russia's “direct invasion” into Eastern Ukraine saying it is a "watershed moment"  and if the United States does not aggressively assist Ukraine the "consequences" will "flow even far beyond" Russia. Saudis paying off ISIS not to attack?

Aug 30 2014 6:11pm CDT | Source: WND

Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud WASHINGTON – Following Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud’s bombshell warning that the next target of the Islamic State, or ISIS, will be Europe first and America a month after that, one Middle East source is suggesting the Saudis may have paid ISIS extortion money not to attack the kingdom. The source, who asked to remain anonymous but is close to officials in the gover ...

The Myth of a Post-Racial America

Aug 28 2014 8:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The election of Barack Obama was the Lexington and Concord in the latest great battle of race in America. We are a nation at war with itself. For all of our desire to move beyond the narrow confines of many of the events of our tragic history, we cannot. The president's election gave new life to what had been lying dangerously dormant for the better part of 50 years. Perhaps it's an unspoken concerted effort to k ...

Has Hillary ever been right?

Aug 28 2014 6:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Sen. Rand Paul raises an interesting question: When has Hillary Clinton ever been right on foreign policy? The valkyrie of the Democratic Party says she urged President Obama to do more to aid Syrian rebels years ago. And last summer, she supported air strikes on Bashar Assad’s regime. Had we followed her advice and crippled Assad’s army, ISIS might be in Damascus today, butchering Christians and Alawites ...
