Can't compromise India's security, says Israel; denies arm sales to Pakistan

Jun 13 2013, 5:42am CDT | by

Jerusalem, June 13 (IANS) Israel has denied having sold military equipment to Pakistan and said it could do nothing to compromise its excellent, strategic relations with India.

Jerusalem, June 13 — Israel has denied having sold military equipment to Pakistan and said it could do nothing to compromise its excellent, strategic relations with India.

"The State of Israel categorically denies having sold military equipment of any kind to Pakistan," Israel's defence ministry said in a statement released to the media.

"Israel would not do anything that could undermine India's security."

The ministry said Israel has a strategic relationship with India, the strongest democracy in the world - which, like Israel, "deals with terrorist threats and serves as a major anchor in global international relations".

"The State of Israel does nothing that could compromise its excellent relations with India," it said.

The ministry issued the statement following a report in the Haaretz newspaper Tuesday which cited official reports from Britain indicating that Israel had sold defence equipment to Pakistan and other countries such as Morocco.

In the statement, the ministry officials said that within the next few days, Israel would ask the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, which is responsible for issuing export permits in Britain, "for details of the information that was published in the official reports", Israeli media reported Wednesday.

Defence cooperation has been critical to the expansion of ties between India and Israel since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations in 1992. Israel has become India's second largest arms supplier after Russia.

While arms sales constitute the largest chunk of Indo-Israeli defence cooperation, other forms of collaboration have taken place. Both countries recognise that terror is a threat, particularly after the 2008 Mumbai attack, and Israel has offered to cooperate in fighting terrorism, including intelligence-sharing, counter-terrorist training, and joint exercises.

Both countries have also exchanged military visits in an effort to expand military-to-military ties. Israel has supplied India with radar systems for airborne early warning and missile defence.

Also, Israel and India have expanded their cooperation into outer space, with India launching two Israeli surveillance satellites. There are reports that the two nations are considering co-development of earth-observation satellites -- an area where Israel has considerable expertise.

There are no diplomatic relations between Israel and Pakistan. Pakistan has also denied that its military had purchased equipment from Israel.

Can India Achieve Financial Inclusion within the Next Few Years?

Jul 23 2014 12:39pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

INDIA-POLITICS-BJP
The new Government of India has made financial inclusion one of the corner stones in its modernization aspirations for the country. In his first budget speech earlier this month, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley set the target of a financial account for each woman and each man in every Indian household by August 2015. This ambitious target is a recognition of how important access to basic financial transaction services -- and ultimately to better savings, credit and insurance options -- a ...

What Prof. Piketty Missed

Jul 22 2014 1:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Prince Charles Visits Sony UK Technology Centre
Prof. Thomas Piketty's book, Capital for the Twenty-First Century, certainly has stirred up plenty of debate and political posturing. Progressives have seized on his careful examination of widening income inequalities to advance an agenda of higher taxes and more income redistribution. Conservatives have criticized his data, his analysis, and, where they acknowledge an income gap, have questioned whether his solutions would help. In all t ...

If you are an Africa-hand, activist or development partner, you are either directly or indirectly involved with the upcoming Washington, D.C. August 4-6, 2014, U.S.-Africa Leaders' Summit. Fundamentally, the event is incredibly historic as it will be the first time that a sitting U.S. president has invited all the leaders of the Africa Region to a single event (with the exceptions of Zimbabwe, Central Africa Republic, Eritrea, and Western Sahara), to discuss key con ...

New BRICS Bank a Building Block of Alternative World Order

Jul 18 2014 2:12pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Portrait Session With Author Parag Khanna
The past several years have been rocky for the BRICS economies -- Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Brazil's growth forecast was slashed considerably as the commodities super-cycle slowed, Russia's political misadventures dragged down its reserves, India's currency took a major beating as its debt levels climbed above the market's appetite, and South Africa has been wracked by corruption and labor unrest. Only China has defied expectations of an imminent burs ...
