Beijing, June 1 Jun 14 — An American teacher at a French school in China's Shanghai city has been arrested on suspicion of child molestation, local authorities said.

The arrest was made following the Pudong New Area People's Procuratorate approval following charges of child molestation, People's Daily reported Friday.

David McMahon, 32, was detained May 13 after police received a report from a French student and her parents claiming that he molested the student several times, according to the municipal public security bureau.

McMahon is suspected of molesting six children -- five French and one Italian -- aged between six and 10, police said.

Shanghai police had requested the Pudong New Area People's Procuratorate to approve the arrest June 7.
