Syrian rebel leader to visit US

Beirut, June 15 (IANS/AKI) Selim Idriss, the military chief of the rebel Free Syrian Army, will travel to Washington Saturday, a report said.

The Now Lebanon website did not provide further details.

The US has said it would arm the rebels after it concluded Syrian forces under President Bashar al-Assad were using chemical weapons.

US President Barack Obama has decided to provide "direct military support" to the opposition, his national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.

Rhodes did not specify whether the support would include lethal aid, such as weapons, which would mark a reversal of Obama's resistance to arming the rebels.

Idriss welcomed the news.

"We hope that such a move will not be ink on paper, but will be implemented on the ground as soon as possible," he told Al Arabiya TV channel.

meanwhile, the acting head of the Syrian National Coalition, George Sabra, described the decision as "a positive step" and expressed hope that there would be no delay.

In a statement Friday, Syria's foreign ministry dismissed the chemical weapons claims by the US intelligence as "a pack of lies".

In a tweet, Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Russian parliament's foreign relations committee, also accused the US of "fabricating" evidence of chemical weapons use to step up its military involvement in Syria.

U.S. government 'breeding terrorists' – in Minnesota

Sep 2 2014 7:32pm CDT | Source: WND

Even as President Obama launched air strikes Tuesday against the al-Shabab terrorist group in Somalia, a pipeline for potential new Somali terrorists continues to fester right here in the United States. It’s called the Refugee Resettlement Program, and it continues unabated under the leadership of the U.S. State Department and with the help of Christian charities. Minneapolis, Minnesota, sits at the heart of the controversial program. ...

Rand Paul: 'Maybe Democracy Is Not Going to Be Possible' in Iraq

Sep 2 2014 6:55pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) argued that democracy may not work in Iraq and that attempting to form American-style democracies in the Middle East tends to lead to “chaos” on Tuesday’s “Sean Hannity Show.”  “A strongman, Hussein, ruled disparate people ... and maybe they were ruled because of his absolute, iron-fisted strength, and maybe democracy is not going to be possible in a country that has so many interests that hate each other and have for thousands of years,” he argued. Paul said there was ...

Why Obama Should Ask Congress for an ISIS AUMF

Sep 2 2014 1:06pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama and his national security advisers have some serious thinking to do over the next week on the scope, duration and lethality of U.S. military action against the organization calling itself the Islamic State. To date, the president has relied upon the Article II powers that are granted to his office by the U.S. Constitution, such as the ability of the Commander-in-Chief to take limited military action when U.S. citizens are at risk. Just this past weekend, Presi ...

The Challenges in Defeating ISIS

Aug 27 2014 1:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Containing and ultimately defeating ISIS will require both short and long-term response. ISIS expansion has been made possible by political conditions in Syria and Iraq, ethnic-religious/sectarian divisions and violence and terror in the region, and the failures of the US and international community. Bashar al-Assad's unprincipled and disproportionate military response to the "threat" of the democratization wave, the Arab Spring, with the slaug ...

Exclusive–Rand Paul: Hillary's 'War Hawk' Policies Led to Benghazi Attack, Rise of ISIS

Aug 27 2014 11:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) certainly has a knack for boldness. On Sunday's Meet the Press, he dubbed U.S. military engagement in Libya “Hillary’s war” and stated the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) is not a result of President Obama's inaction in the Middle East but the unintended consequence of the U.S. military engagement in Libya. The comments predictably caused heads in the GOP's foreign policy establishment to explode. The Washington ...
