Syrian rebel leader to visit US

Beirut, June 15 (IANS/AKI) Selim Idriss, the military chief of the rebel Free Syrian Army, will travel to Washington Saturday, a report said.

Beirut, June 15 (IANS/AKI) Selim Idriss, the military chief of the rebel Free Syrian Army, will travel to Washington Saturday, a report said.

The Now Lebanon website did not provide further details.

The US has said it would arm the rebels after it concluded Syrian forces under President Bashar al-Assad were using chemical weapons.

US President Barack Obama has decided to provide "direct military support" to the opposition, his national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.

Rhodes did not specify whether the support would include lethal aid, such as weapons, which would mark a reversal of Obama's resistance to arming the rebels.

Idriss welcomed the news.

"We hope that such a move will not be ink on paper, but will be implemented on the ground as soon as possible," he told Al Arabiya TV channel.

meanwhile, the acting head of the Syrian National Coalition, George Sabra, described the decision as "a positive step" and expressed hope that there would be no delay.

In a statement Friday, Syria's foreign ministry dismissed the chemical weapons claims by the US intelligence as "a pack of lies".

In a tweet, Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Russian parliament's foreign relations committee, also accused the US of "fabricating" evidence of chemical weapons use to step up its military involvement in Syria.

But now ties to the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, are emerging. The Jerusalem Post reported one Islamic State member said Turkey, a member of NATO, provided funds for the terrorist group. "Turkey paved the way for us. Had Turkey not shown such understanding for us, the Islamic State wou ...

According to NBC, the Islamic State – which is attempting to transition from terrorist group to, precisely, a state – has begun to sell g ...

7 Things to Consider Before Choosing Sides in the Middle East Conflict

Jul 28 2014 1:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Are you "pro-Israel" or "pro-Palestine"? It isn't even noon yet as I write this, and I've already been accused of being both. These terms intrigue me because they directly speak to the doggedly tribal nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You don't hear of too many other countries being universally spoken of this way. Why these two? Both Israelis and Palestinians are complex, with diverse histories and cultures, and two incredib ...

Why More Israelis Should Die

Jul 28 2014 10:04am CDT | Source: Big Government

To remedy the simply awful tragedy of not enough Israelis dying as a result of Hamas rocket attacks, something must be done! Send in NATO, bomb an old people’s home, send in UN inspectors to dismantle the Iron Dome systems! It simply is not fair! Such would be the twisted logic that the anti-Israeli crowd are peddling at the moment. Supposed moral outrage points to the heavy casualties suffered by Gazans, and asks, 'Why can't it be more tragic for Israel, too? ...

Jul 25 2014 12:02pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), has had months to establish its jihadist rule of terror in Raqqa, Syria, its "capital." As The New York Times reports, ISIS is stealing from banks and redistributing taxes into social welfare and infrastructure, but has been set back by a lack of vocational education. The New York Times sent an unnamed reporter to Raqqa, to exp ...
