Syrian rebel leader to visit US

Jun 14 2013, 5:54pm CDT | by

Beirut, June 15 (IANS/AKI) Selim Idriss, the military chief of the rebel Free Syrian Army, will travel to Washington Saturday, a report said.

Beirut, June 15 (IANS/AKI) Selim Idriss, the military chief of the rebel Free Syrian Army, will travel to Washington Saturday, a report said.

The Now Lebanon website did not provide further details.

The US has said it would arm the rebels after it concluded Syrian forces under President Bashar al-Assad were using chemical weapons.

US President Barack Obama has decided to provide "direct military support" to the opposition, his national security adviser Ben Rhodes said.

Rhodes did not specify whether the support would include lethal aid, such as weapons, which would mark a reversal of Obama's resistance to arming the rebels.

Idriss welcomed the news.

"We hope that such a move will not be ink on paper, but will be implemented on the ground as soon as possible," he told Al Arabiya TV channel.

meanwhile, the acting head of the Syrian National Coalition, George Sabra, described the decision as "a positive step" and expressed hope that there would be no delay.

In a statement Friday, Syria's foreign ministry dismissed the chemical weapons claims by the US intelligence as "a pack of lies".

In a tweet, Alexei Pushkov, chairman of the Russian parliament's foreign relations committee, also accused the US of "fabricating" evidence of chemical weapons use to step up its military involvement in Syria.

A nurse in Turkey told authorities she is tired of treating members from the Islamic State. Alleged ISIS Photo Controversy Engulfs Sen. John McCain

Sep 18 2014 10:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and his aides swear the Syrian “rebels” he was pictured last year with weren’t ISIS members or supporters, and the mainstream media is by and large buying the 2008 GOP presidential nominee’s story.  Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has endured brutal criticism—media fact checkers, reporters, and political figures have shredded him—for questioning just who McCain posed with. But a clos ...

Obama Has No ISIS Strategy

Sep 16 2014 10:56am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Obama said a week ago he did not have a strategy to combat ISIS, and that now he does. He was right the first time. Oh, History The United States ignored ISIS for months. Then out of nowhere a complex situation morphed into a struggle to save the Yazidis from so-called genocide, requiring special forces and air strikes. The Yazidis disappeared from view, perhaps saved, certainly no longer needed as an emotional excuse to re-enter a war we had been told ended ...

The terrorist organization's confidence grew, based on experience gained from its military intervention in Syria on behalf of dictator Bashar al-Assad. That, the Israeli military official believes, has the group considering going on the offen ...

Get Out! - The Only Sane Response to the Islamic State

Sep 14 2014 8:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Islamic State (ISIS) proves the law of unintended consequences. Congratulations America! We killed Christianity in the Middle East and unleashed a terror organization with far greater reach and power than Al Qaeda ever possessed. If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, then our foreign policy needs to have been locked away in an institution ...

Iraqi Forces Set Stage for Another Massacre of Iranian Refugees in Camp Liberty

Sep 12 2014 5:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Iranian regime is definitely the biggest loser of Minister Nouri Al-Maliki withdrawing his candidacy for a third term as Iraq’s Prime Minister. During eight years of divisive and sectarian rule, Maliki had proved himself to be the Iranian regime’s greatest ally in the region, dedicating his power and resources to furthering Iran’s agendas in Iraq and the region. It had been under Maliki’s tenure that the mu ...

Obama's Last Chance to Control His Credibility

Sep 11 2014 7:52pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama has a precious opportunity to carve out a legacy for himself and carry out a coup against the reputation of weakness, repudiation and retreat that has dogged and haunted him. The Islamic State (IS) had invited the U.S. president to a war, which has opened a window for Barack Obama to shape his own fate rather than leaving his historical political legacy in the hands of others. ...
