No military solution to Syria conflict: UN chief

United Nations, June 15 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reaffirmed his organisation's determination to seek a political settlement to the long-standing crisis in Syria, saying "there is no military solution" to the conflict.

United Nations, June 15 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reaffirmed his organisation's determination to seek a political settlement to the long-standing crisis in Syria, saying "there is no military solution" to the conflict.

"There is no military solution to this conflict, even if both the government and the opposition, and their supporters, think there can be," Xinhua quoted the secretary-general as saying Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York.

"The military path points directly towards the further disintegration of the country, destabilisation of the region and inflammation of religious and communal tensions," Ban said.

The Syrian crisis broke out in March 2011, leading to a massive exodus of refugees into neighbouring countries, such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

The UN has been pushing for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, with efforts to bring the government and opposition to the negotiation table.

"The worsening of the conflict is also making the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance much more difficult," Ban said.

He appealed to the international community to support the neighbouring countries bearing the burden of refugees.

"The suffering of the Syrian people makes a political solution all the more important," Ban said.

"Joint Special Representative (Lakhdar) Brahimi and I continue to push for a negotiated transition and to get the parties to the table in Geneva as soon as possible," Ban said.

"All countries involved must uphold their responsibilities to seek a resolution of this tragedy."

Earlier this month, Brahimi said in Geneva following talks held there among US, Russian and UN officials, that the international conference on Syria was likely to be held in July.

Russia and US announced last month their intention to convene an international conference to find a political solution to the Syria crisis, which has reportedly claimed nearly 93,000 lives over the past two years.

The crisis has also left 6.8 million people in need, and sent more than 1.5 million Syrians fleeing to neighbouring countries to seek refuge.

WASHINGTON –- The Obama administration plans to emphasize strongly its climate change efforts at next week's United Nations climate summit in New York, officials said this week. "We are taking this summit seriously both to show the world that the U.S. is leading on climate change, and to call on other leaders to step up to the plate," John Podesta, who serves as a counselor to President Barack Obama, said Thursday in a call with reporter ...

Climate Change Hunger: World Leaders Must Act

Sep 19 2014 10:33am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Discussions on curbing greenhouse gas emissions always seem to proceed excruciatingly slowly, as climate change is forever being brushed aside as a far off concern for a distant future. They fail time and again because politicians of all stripes pay more attention to the short-term horizon of the next election than the world future generations will live in. Future generations - after all - cannot vote. That was, until now, ...

Measuring Up: How To Assess The Upcoming U.N. Climate Summit

Sep 16 2014 12:15pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: flickr/ United Nations Photo The September 23 U.N. climate summit in New York City is not an official U.N. negotiating session but in many ways it is more than that. While the official United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings have the potential to usher in bold treaties, they are also subject to bickering over minutia and watering down of expectations. The extensively hyped Conference of Parties (CO ...

Fighting Climate Change Makes Economic Sense; Cities Should Take The Lead, Study Finds

Sep 15 2014 11:01pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

By Alister Doyle and William Schomberg OSLO/LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Investments to help fight climate change can also spur economic growth, rather than slow it as widely feared, but time is running short for a trillion-dollar shift to transform cities and energy use, an international report said on Tuesday. The study, by former heads of government, business leaders, economists and other experts, said the next 15 years were critical for a ...
