No military solution to Syria conflict: UN chief

United Nations, June 15 (IANS) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reaffirmed his organisation's determination to seek a political settlement to the long-standing crisis in Syria, saying "there is no military solution" to the conflict.

United Nations, June 15 — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has reaffirmed his organisation's determination to seek a political settlement to the long-standing crisis in Syria, saying "there is no military solution" to the conflict.

"There is no military solution to this conflict, even if both the government and the opposition, and their supporters, think there can be," Xinhua quoted the secretary-general as saying Friday at the UN Headquarters in New York.

"The military path points directly towards the further disintegration of the country, destabilisation of the region and inflammation of religious and communal tensions," Ban said.

The Syrian crisis broke out in March 2011, leading to a massive exodus of refugees into neighbouring countries, such as Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.

The UN has been pushing for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, with efforts to bring the government and opposition to the negotiation table.

"The worsening of the conflict is also making the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance much more difficult," Ban said.

He appealed to the international community to support the neighbouring countries bearing the burden of refugees.

"The suffering of the Syrian people makes a political solution all the more important," Ban said.

"Joint Special Representative (Lakhdar) Brahimi and I continue to push for a negotiated transition and to get the parties to the table in Geneva as soon as possible," Ban said.

"All countries involved must uphold their responsibilities to seek a resolution of this tragedy."

Earlier this month, Brahimi said in Geneva following talks held there among US, Russian and UN officials, that the international conference on Syria was likely to be held in July.

Russia and US announced last month their intention to convene an international conference to find a political solution to the Syria crisis, which has reportedly claimed nearly 93,000 lives over the past two years.

The crisis has also left 6.8 million people in need, and sent more than 1.5 million Syrians fleeing to neighbouring countries to seek refuge.

Protect the Future of Peacekeeping

Nov 4 2014 8:38am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On a Friday in early October -- amid a flood of news on ISIL and an escalating Ebola crisis -- it might have been easy to miss this headline: Nine United Nations Peacekeepers were ambushed and killed by gunmen in Mali. Less than a week later, another Peacekeeper in Mali was killed in a rocket attack. However, much as these tragedies may seem part of peacekeeping's inherent risks, they were more ...

UN Climate Change Report Delivers Stark Warnings

Nov 2 2014 6:35am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Climate change is happening, it's almost entirely man's fault and limiting its impacts may require reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, the U.N.'s panel on climate science said Sunday. The fourth and final volume of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's giant climate assessment didn't offer any surprises, nor was it expected to since it combined the findings of three earlier reports released in the past 1 ...

We Must Not Even Think of Accusing Leonardo DiCaprio of Hypocrisy

Nov 1 2014 3:45pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy: One test-pilot was killed, and another seriously injured.  But there is, at least, a silver lining: There’s no need to worry about another possible issue concerning Richard Branson’s spaceflight venture—namely, that all those internal-combustion-powered flights would contribute to the dread danger of climate change.   ...

Friday’s crash of the Virgin Galactic space-plane in California was, of course, a tragedy. Indeed, to the untrained eye and the untutored mind, it might seem ...

U.N. chief 'shocked and alarmed' by Gaza tunnels

Oct 24 2014 8:47pm CDT | Source: WND

(Israel Hayom) U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon visited southern Israel and the Gaza Strip on Tuesday and told both sides what they wanted to hear. After meeting in Gaza with members of the Palestinian unity government, Ban said, “I am here with a very heavy heart. The destruction which I have seen coming here is beyond description. This is much more serious destruction than I saw in 2009 immediately after the violence at that time.” Ban vowed to southern Israel resi ...
