Italian official held for 10-mn-euro graft

Rome, June 15 (IANS/AKI) A former senior official in the Italian government has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling 10 million euros of interior ministry funds, police said.

Francesco La Motta was the director of the interior ministry's Religious Buildings Foundation between 2003 and 2006. The foundation administers more than 700 Catholic churches and museums and books and works of art contained in them.

Prosecutors are probing La Motta for allegedly transferring into a Swiss bank account the 10 million euros earmarked for preservation of churches and cultural assets.

The Swiss bank account was later emptied, prosecutors said.

Former banker Klaus Beherend, cinema producer Eduardo Tartaglia and broker Rocco Zullino were also arrested Friday in connection with the probe, police said.

La Motta is also at the centre of a separate judicial probe in Naples into alleged money-laundering by the local mafia or Camorra. Judges have so far seized a billion euros of assets from the Polverino crime family.

Oct 23 2014 7:46am CDT | Source: Big Government

A black woman has been attacked and told to “get off the bus” on public mass-transit in Rome on Monday, as fellow travellers accused her of having Ebola and began to beat her. The Catholic Church and Contraception: Revolution...or Evolution?

Oct 14 2014 3:46pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The wording is far from clear and it's only a mid-term report, but the statement issued this week by the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome is being described as an "earthquake" by Church liberals and a "betrayal" by Church conservatives. So, is the Catholic Church shifting its position on contraception? From my uninformed vantage point, the statement does not appear very radical with respect to th ...

Vatican backtracks on positive 'gay' comments

Oct 14 2014 3:10pm CDT | Source: WND

Rome (CNN) — Under furious assault from conservative Catholics, the Vatican backtracked Tuesday on its surprisingly positive assessment of gays and same-sex relationships. In a report Monday, the Vatican had said that gays and lesbians have “gifts to offer” the Christian community and acknowledged that same-sex couples can give “precious support” to one other. The statement, an interim report from a closely watched meeting of Catholic clergy here, was widely p ...

Vatican: Homosexuals have 'gifts' to offer Christians

Oct 13 2014 12:28pm CDT | Source: WND

(LONDON GUARDIAN) Is this the modern family according to Francis? From gay relationships to extramarital sex, from divorce and remarriage to civil unions, the Roman Catholic church has signalled it is ready to adopt what some see as a markedly more conciliatory tone towards those in “irregular” familial setups. While clinging to doctrine that considers gay sex wrong and marriage indissoluble, bishops in Rome for the pope’s extraordi ...

Mixed Muslim-Catholic Couple Addresses Vatican Summit

Oct 8 2014 9:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Bishops gathered in Rome this morning for the Vatican synod on the family and heard a remarkable testimony from a Catholic woman from the African country of Côte d’Ivoire, whose husband of 52 years is a Muslim. “For us, as a mixed couple,” said Jeannette Touré, the theme of pastoral challenges for the family “is all the more important.” We ask ourselves—a Muslim man and a Catholic woman who have loved each other for a little over 52 yea ...
