Italian official held for 10-mn-euro graft

Rome, June 15 (IANS/AKI) A former senior official in the Italian government has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling 10 million euros of interior ministry funds, police said.

Rome, June 15 (IANS/AKI) A former senior official in the Italian government has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling 10 million euros of interior ministry funds, police said.

Francesco La Motta was the director of the interior ministry's Religious Buildings Foundation between 2003 and 2006. The foundation administers more than 700 Catholic churches and museums and books and works of art contained in them.

Prosecutors are probing La Motta for allegedly transferring into a Swiss bank account the 10 million euros earmarked for preservation of churches and cultural assets.

The Swiss bank account was later emptied, prosecutors said.

Former banker Klaus Beherend, cinema producer Eduardo Tartaglia and broker Rocco Zullino were also arrested Friday in connection with the probe, police said.

La Motta is also at the centre of a separate judicial probe in Naples into alleged money-laundering by the local mafia or Camorra. Judges have so far seized a billion euros of assets from the Polverino crime family.

I'm Sad: People Often Choose to Show Their Worst Side, Not Their Best

Jul 22 2014 11:26am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

CHINA-ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
The weather is sunny, the grass is green and the roses are blooming, but as I watch the news and read the paper, I become sad at the violence, poverty and brutality in the world we live. I worry because income inequality is staggering, education and infrastructure are crumbling and moneyed interests are taking over our democratic process. Just as Rome had its glory days and rose to world prominence, its lavish lifestyle for the few contributed ...

Sarah Palin: Obama 'Satisfying Those Munchies' And Getting 'Buzzed On Suds' As 'Rome Burns'

Jul 11 2014 11:16am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Obama Visits Austin
Instead of visiting the “porous U.S. border” during his three-day Democratic fundraising trip across the country, President Barack Obama was too busy “hobnobbing” and “getting buzzed on suds,” Sarah Palin claimed in a Fox News op-ed Thursday. On Tuesday, a day before a scheduled speech on Denver’s economic progress, Obama ran into Gov. John Hickenlooper (D) at Wynkoop Brewing Company, where they played a highly publicized game of pool. Palin viewed the pit-stop as ...

When in Rome, skip the Vatican

Jun 12 2014 10:01am CDT | Source: The Cabinet Press

Garbage Crisis in Rome
This is Part 4 of a five-part story on a trip to Rome. Now comes the travel sacrilege and perhaps, it is just sacrilege, period, but here is some advice that I hope you heed, although had someone given it to me before we went to Rome, I’m certain I would have ignored it. Anyway, here it is: Do not go to the Vatican. Ah, I can see you’re shocked, wondering, “How can anyone go all the way to Rome and not go to the Vatican?” Precisely my thought before we left on our trip, which is why w ...

The high cost of poor integrity

State Of Origin III - QLD v NSW
If you have stayed in a hotel room lately, then you have probably noticed that everything seems to be nailed to the floor. The hangers have hooks that only fit the rods in that hotel closet, and the pictures are permanently attached to the wall. This is because some people go into hotels and rob them blind. Maybe they figure that because they paid $95 for the room, the lamps are theirs. We have alarm systems on our cars with blinkin ...
