Beijing, June 16 — A court in China has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for forging financial documents to get over 10 billion yuan (around $1.6 billion) from banks and companies.

Liu Jiyuan, 45, former president of an investment management company in Shanghai, was accused of swindling 10.13 billion yuan from several banks and enterprises between November 2008 to November 2010, Xinhua reported.

The court in Jinan in Shandong province said Liu forged seals of banks and companies, loan materials, certificates of deposit and telegraphic transfer as well as cheques.

Liu was also accused of pretending to be a bank staffer to illegally gather deposit from enterprises.

Over eight billion yuan has been retrieved after Liu's case was exposed.

Vladimir Putin’s Awkward, Hypocritical Relationship With Separatists

Jul 22 2014 1:28pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Will Freeman is an intern with Think Progress. CREDIT: AP Images Russia just passed a new law promising increased penalties, including heavy fines or up to four years in prison, for making public calls for separatism — the ultimate irony for a country that is actively fueling a separatist movement just over the border in Ukraine. Over the years, President Vladimir Putin has made it his trademark in speeches and even New York Times op-eds to call out the U.S. o ...

Stop Inversions with Tax Cuts

Jul 22 2014 1:23pm CDT | Source: Downsizing Government

Chris EdwardsThe corporate inversion trend tells us that global tax competition is intense and that U.S. tax reform is long overdue. Our combined federal-state corporate tax rate of 40 percent is far higher than the rates of our trading partners. Inversions are a bid by companies to create self-help tax reform while Congress sits on its hands.U.S. companies compete in foreign markets against firms based in countries that have lower tax rates and ...

Downing of MH-17, Ukrainian Crisis Lay Bare US, European Weakness

FC Bayern Muenchen v Arsenal - UEFA Champions League Round of 16
The downing of Malaysia flight MH17 casts new light on just how inept and decadent the United States and Europe have become. Faced with Russia’s annexation of the Crimea and attempts to repeat in eastern Ukraine, the best Western Europe and the United States have mustered are strong words and token sanctions on top Russian officials and several companies. That’s hardly enough to deter Vladimir Putin’s ambitions to make Russia the domi ...

China brewing wine from tiger bones

Jul 22 2014 11:39am CDT | Source: WND

(DAILY BEAST) From an old cardboard box, Li Wen drew a clear glass bottle filled with a dark brown liquid. The yellowed label indicated that it was brewed decades ago. “I have newer batches too,” Li said in a voice stained by caffeine and nicotine, “and I’m also making my own.” Several steps away, like a stage magician, he lifted a black cloth for the grand reveal: a glass carboy, about five gallons in volume, filled nearly to the bri ...

Jul 22 2014 10:18am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Kairos Society Global Summit - Day 2
In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers revived a debate I'd had with futurist Ray Kurzweil in 2012 about the jobless future. He echoed the words of Peter Diamandis, who says that we are moving from a history of scarcity to an era of abundance. Then he noted that the technologies that make such abundance possible are allowing production of far more outp ...
