Beijing, June 16 — A court in China has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for forging financial documents to get over 10 billion yuan (around $1.6 billion) from banks and companies.

Liu Jiyuan, 45, former president of an investment management company in Shanghai, was accused of swindling 10.13 billion yuan from several banks and enterprises between November 2008 to November 2010, Xinhua reported.

The court in Jinan in Shandong province said Liu forged seals of banks and companies, loan materials, certificates of deposit and telegraphic transfer as well as cheques.

Liu was also accused of pretending to be a bank staffer to illegally gather deposit from enterprises.

Over eight billion yuan has been retrieved after Liu's case was exposed.

Air Power

Aug 28 2014 3:43pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Prior to Operation Desert Storm, it was established naval doctrine that aircraft carriers could never operate in the Persian Gulf. The area was so small it left the great behemoths vulnerable to shore-based rockets or raids by small torpedo boats. The assumption was that we would not risk a multi-billion dollar aircraft carrier with its 70-plus aircraft and 5,000 people in such a confined space. When the war broke out, that doctrine went by the wayside. We needed launching ...

It seems straightforward to say that when you buy a new car by taking out a loan, you’re committing to spending a certain amount of your income per month on that car for a specific period of time. Of course, by buying that car, you’re also committing to polluting the atmosphere with some amount of carbon dioxide. But how often do car buyers make that calculation? The same can be said fo ...

The Plague

Aug 28 2014 7:17am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In his novel The Plague, Albert Camus describes how death comes to an ugly French port in Algeria. Thanks to an infestation of rats and the fleas they carry, the bubonic plague descends upon the city in the spring and intensifies during the hot summer.
