32 die in Iraq suicide bombing

Jun 18 2013, 7:12am CDT | by

Baghdad, June 18 (IANS) At least 32 people were killed and over 50 injured in twin suicide bomb attacks at a mosque in the Iraqi capital, an interior ministry official said.

Baghdad, June 18 — At least 32 people were killed and over 50 injured in twin suicide bomb attacks at a mosque in the Iraqi capital, an interior ministry official said.

The attacks occurred around midday at the al-Husseiniyah mosque in al-Qahira district, when two suicide bombers blew themselves up during prayers, Xinhua reported.

The official said the two attackers first shot dead the guards of the mosque with silenced weapons before entering the building and blowing up their explosive vests.

Ambulances, civilian and police vehicles evacuated the injured to various hospitals across the city.

BBC said Tuesday's attack comes a day after bombings killed at least 10 people in the cities of Taji and Fallujah near Baghdad.

Last month was the bloodiest in Iraq since June 2008, with 1,045 civilians and security officials killed.

Emirates to Stop Flights Over Iraq

Jul 28 2014 10:39am CDT | Source: Big Government

Emirates, one of the world’s largest airlines, will not travel in Iraq airspace due to the ongoing violence from the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS. Sir Tim Clark, president of the airlines, said the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 changed the airline's approach to warzones. “This is a political animal but . . . the fact of the matter is MH17 changed everything, and that was very nearly in European airspace,” he said. “We cannot continue to say, ‘Well it’s a political thing’. We ...

Anglican Vicar Andrew White Says End of Christianity in Iraq Is 'Very Near'

Jul 26 2014 4:02pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Andrew White, the vicar of the only Anglican church in Iraq, told BBC Radio 4 that Christianity is ending in the country. The Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, is forcing Christians out of towns and into isolation. “Things are so desperate, our people are disappearing,” he said. “We have had people massacred, their heads chopped off. The Christians are in grave danger. There are literally Christians living in the desert and on the street. They have nowhere to go.” "Are ...

In the Loop: President Obama gives a lot of speeches, but not from the Oval Office

Jul 26 2014 7:01am CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

Did you catch President Obama’s Oval Office speech on Aug. 31, 2010, announcing the end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq? No?  Too bad. It was an historic speech. Not just because of the subject matter — telling some 29.2 million viewers there would be no more U.S. combat operations in that country — but also because it might have been the last one he’s going to give from behind his office desk ...

Why the Iran Negotiations Matter in Columbus

Jul 25 2014 2:44pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The tragedy of the downed Malaysian Airlines plane in Ukraine, the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflagration, the tumult in Iraq and Syria are a few recent examples of how cold and festering conflicts can turn hot quickly, with deadly consequences. Fortunately, patient and careful diplomacy can have the opposite effects, gradually easing long-held enmity and mistrust and paving the way for better relations. Over this past weekend, we saw the contin ...

Christians Describe Inhumane Treatment by ISIS in Mosul, Iraq

Jul 25 2014 1:04pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Christians expelled from Mosul, Iraq, are speaking out about the treatment they endured by the Islamic State, a jihadist group formerly known as ISIS. The jihadists told the Christians to convert to Islam, pay a protection tax, or die. “Yes, they expelled us from our real land,” one woman said. “From our real land! They told us, ‘Go away! This is not your land. Go to your Christian people and to your pastors. Let them feed you, shelt ...

Veil Restrictions Just the Latest in ISIS's War on Women

Jul 25 2014 12:24pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A day after a UN report said the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, ordered female genital mutilation (FGM), the terrorist group told women to wear a full-face veil.  "The conditions imposed on her clothes and grooming was only to end the pretext of debauchery resulting from grooming and overdressing," said ISIS. "This is not a restriction on her freedom but to prevent her from falling into humiliation and vulgarity or to be a theatre for the eyes of those who a ...

ISIS Demands Women Wear Full Veils to End 'Pretext Of Debauchery'

Jul 25 2014 10:34am CDT | Source: Big Government

On July 25 the Islamic State warned that women in Mosul must wear full veils "to end the pretext of debauchery." The women were also told they "risk severe punishment" for not complying.  This comes amid news that the Islamic State has 3,000 fighters in Iraq: a number that approaches 20,000 "when new recruits...are included." According to Reuters, the Islamic State released a statement explaining how "overdressing" by the women in ...

Six Year Blues

Jul 24 2014 2:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Almost every president in recent history has experienced what I like to call "The six-year blues." For Reagan it was Iran-Contra, for Clinton it was Monica Lewinsky, and for George W. Bush, it was Iraq and Afghanistan. President's Truman and Johnson decided they didn't want to run for a second elected term because they were so unpopular. Nixon needs no explanation. And now, President Obama is suffering from hi ...
