Beijing, June 18 — Border police in south China have seized a large number of snakes and tortoises in a cross-border smuggling case, officials said.

The reptiles, contained in 160 boxes in a truck, were confiscated in the coastal city of Fangchenggang in Guangxi Zhuang region, Xinhua reported.

The public security border defence forces said most of the animals were alive when they were found.

Police suspect that the reptiles were smuggled into China from neighbouring countries.

The animals were later handed over to forestry authorities.

In May, border police in the same city seized 89 boxes containing snakes and 24 boxes of tortoises.

Oct 21 2014 8:59am CDT | Source: Big Government

This article originally appeared in The Daily Beast: The Qat plant, a staple in Middle Eastern cities, has become popular in China for its mild buzz—but the government says it’s a dangerous gateway drug.  It’s a common sight in this city, as it is in Yemen, Somalia or Ethiopia: idle men plucking leaves out of a flimsy plastic bag, grinding them into mush between their teeth, filling every crevice with bits of green. A few ...

A Silver Lining for the Ebola Crisis?

Oct 21 2014 7:30am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The dark cloud that is the Ebola epidemic hanging over West Africa, and moving into Europe and the United States, could have a silver lining if global leaders have the wisdom and courage to act. This is a strategic opportunity to replace the existing reactive, ad hoc global health response system with a more proactive, targeted response to outbreaks of infectious disease. That was among the conclusions of ...
