14 killed in attack on UN headquarters in Somalia

Jun 19 2013, 10:58am CDT | by

Washington, June 19 (IANS) At least 14 people were killed and 15 others were wounded in an attack on the UN headquarters in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Wednesday, CNN reported.

Washington, June 19 — At least 14 people were killed and 15 others were wounded in an attack on the UN headquarters in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Wednesday, CNN reported.

Seven militants, four UN employees and three female civilians were killed, said Abdikarim Hussein Guled, the country's interior and national security minister.

The Al-Shabaab militant group linked to Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack.

One attacker blew himself up at the entrance of the UN compound, situated near the city's airport, police officer Hussein Ahmed told CNN.

Several others wearing suicide vests entered the compound following the suicide blast.

Somali and African Union forces later surrounded the building and fought with the armed assailants.

Heaps of disfigured and mangled buses and cars were seen, and many windows of nearby apartments shattered, and the ground was littered with blood and body parts.

The compound has now been secured and is in the hands of African Union troops, according to the official Twitter account of the African Union Mission to Somalia.

Xinhua put the toll at 15, saying eight people working for the UN were killed.

It quoted the Somali interior minister as saying that the eight people, including four foreigners, worked for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) office in Mogadishu.

Witnesses and medics said 13 civilians were injured.

Xinhua said the attackers used a car bomb which was detonated at the gate of the UNDP compound, before heavily armed fighters in military uniforms entered the building and exchanged gunfire with guards inside the premises.

The Somali government condemned the deadly attack.

Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said the attack was "despicable".

"I condemn this senseless and despicable attack on innocent UN civilians this morning. The UN are our friends and partners, and the UN agencies offer us humanitarian help and support," Shirdon said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also expressed shock at the attack.

The UN Palestinian refugee body (UNRWA) is under the complete control of Gaza-based terror groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad, a Center For Near East Policy Research report concluded. UN World Humanitarian Day: How These Forces For Good Find Inspiration

Aug 19 2014 3:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Every year, thousands of aid workers around the world put their lives in danger daily to help people in need. Each finds his or her inspiration from a different place. U.N. Chief of Peacekeeping Operations Ken Payumo realized his work meant something when he stood between Sudanese government officials and refugees, stopping the probable harm of thousands. For UNICEF's Pernille Ironside, it was a 14-year-old Gazan girl who wished she died i ...

How Detroit's Water Crisis Is Part Of A Much Bigger Problem

Aug 19 2014 2:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In Detroit, thousands of people have had their water turned off in the last few months after not paying their bills. For the water department, it's a way to get delinquent customers to settle their tabs. For residents and activists, it's a serious issue when the city's poorest, including children, are made to live without running water in their home. A group of United Nations experts called it a violation of huma ...

Giving Migrant Families a Reason to Stay Home

Aug 19 2014 2:23pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a Mexican immigrant to the U.S., raised in the border town of Ciudad Juarez, I grew up witnessing the lure of America. As a father, I can understand the desperation that would compel a parent to risk his child's life for the promise of a better future. Yet I am appalled and heartsick that 57,000 children have migrated with no parent or guardian, apprehended at the U.S. border since last October. Statistics surrounding this crisis are staggering. The number ...

Has the Moment Passed for Israel to Take out Hamas?

Aug 19 2014 8:34am CDT | Source: Big Government

As a 24-hour extension of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continued Tuesday, with a deal still elusive, it is becoming less clear that Israel can still count on the political will or international patience that would allow it to remove Hamas from power in Gaza. News of a foiled Hamas coup against the Palestinian Authority has made the case against Hamas clearer. Yet several factors are now pushing against any decisive Israeli action--fo ...

What The Pope Actually Said About U.S. Airstrikes In Iraq

Aug 18 2014 4:20pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Pope Francis CREDIT: AP Photo/Jorge Saenz Speaking to press on Monday, initial reports indicated that Pope Francis openly endorsed the use of military force against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a militant group currently marauding its way through Iraq. But closer examination of the pope’s comments reveals that while Francis does appear to support some form of intervention in the region, his position is actually far more complicated than it initially appears, and ...
