14 killed in attack on UN headquarters in Somalia

Jun 19 2013, 10:58am CDT | by

Washington, June 19 (IANS) At least 14 people were killed and 15 others were wounded in an attack on the UN headquarters in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Wednesday, CNN reported.

Washington, June 19 — At least 14 people were killed and 15 others were wounded in an attack on the UN headquarters in the Somali capital of Mogadishu Wednesday, CNN reported.

Seven militants, four UN employees and three female civilians were killed, said Abdikarim Hussein Guled, the country's interior and national security minister.

The Al-Shabaab militant group linked to Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack.

One attacker blew himself up at the entrance of the UN compound, situated near the city's airport, police officer Hussein Ahmed told CNN.

Several others wearing suicide vests entered the compound following the suicide blast.

Somali and African Union forces later surrounded the building and fought with the armed assailants.

Heaps of disfigured and mangled buses and cars were seen, and many windows of nearby apartments shattered, and the ground was littered with blood and body parts.

The compound has now been secured and is in the hands of African Union troops, according to the official Twitter account of the African Union Mission to Somalia.

Xinhua put the toll at 15, saying eight people working for the UN were killed.

It quoted the Somali interior minister as saying that the eight people, including four foreigners, worked for the UN Development Programme (UNDP) office in Mogadishu.

Witnesses and medics said 13 civilians were injured.

Xinhua said the attackers used a car bomb which was detonated at the gate of the UNDP compound, before heavily armed fighters in military uniforms entered the building and exchanged gunfire with guards inside the premises.

The Somali government condemned the deadly attack.

Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon said the attack was "despicable".

"I condemn this senseless and despicable attack on innocent UN civilians this morning. The UN are our friends and partners, and the UN agencies offer us humanitarian help and support," Shirdon said.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also expressed shock at the attack.

In a region with no shortage of human catastrophes, Libya seems determined to elbow its way into the headlines. Rival militias are fighting for control of Tripoli’s international airport. In the east, a breakaway faction of the Libyan armed forces led by a retired general, Khalifa Hifter, is shelling Islamist militias in and around Benghazi. Foreign diplomats, businessmen, the U.N. mission and now the U.S. Embassy have evacuated. Read full artic ...

Why More Israelis Should Die

Jul 28 2014 10:04am CDT | Source: Big Government

To remedy the simply awful tragedy of not enough Israelis dying as a result of Hamas rocket attacks, something must be done! Send in NATO, bomb an old people’s home, send in UN inspectors to dismantle the Iron Dome systems! It simply is not fair! Such would be the twisted logic that the anti-Israeli crowd are peddling at the moment. Supposed moral outrage points to the heavy casualties suffered by Gazans, and asks, 'Why can't it be more tragic ...

Once Again, Obama Helps Israel by Hurting It

Jul 28 2014 8:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

President Barack Obama's attempt to impose his will on Israel--and save face after Secretary of State John Kerry's disastrous ceasefire mission--continued at the UN Security Council overnight, with a midnight session Monday morning demanding a ceasefire.  It was a gross betrayal of America's best ally in the Middle East. However, it has--quite unintentionally--created a new opportunity for Israel in its war against Hamas. T ...

Jul 28 2014 7:21am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

David Gregory had to correct himself on Sunday's "Meet The Press" after getting into a bit of trouble with a video he showed to a guest. Gregory was speaking to Chris Gunness, the spokesperson for the UN Relief and Works Agency, about the crisis in Gaza. Gregory showed him Israeli video which he said had not been verified by NBC News and which Guinness could not even see. “The Israelis say...that [the video] purports to show rockets being fired from a UN school,” Gregory ...

Backstabbed: Obama Sics UN on Israel to Impose 'Unconditional' Ceasefire

Jul 27 2014 11:00pm CDT | Source: Big Government

On Sunday evening, after calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and demanding an "immediate, unconditional" ceasefire in the war with Hamas, President Barack Obama convened an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to ratify a unanimous resolution to the same effect. Ironically, President Obama declined to take the case for military action against Syria to the UN Security Council last year. According to a leaked draft of the resolution, the ...

IDF Video Proves Israeli Mortar at Gaza School Did Not Kill 16 People

Jul 27 2014 7:57pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Israeli army has provided proof that while an IDF mortar did indeed hit a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in Beit Hanoun in Gaza, it did not kill 16 people as much of the world's media has reported. The video below reveals how a stray round hit the school's courtyard, but also proves that there were no people in the immediate area. The issue has been a key point raised by anti-Israel activists and politicians in recent days, with many arguing that the att ...

Obama knows that if the GOP tries to impeach him, the Kool-Aid drinking usurper supporters will take to the streets of America with rioting that will be so severe Obama will step in, declare martial law and shut down all elections. Obama knows that this would be his golden opportunity to use the rioting to finally shut the mouths of all who oppose his Marxist agenda and give him the opportunity to have the United Nations’ blue helmets start rounding u ...
