Russia, US heading for confrontation over Syria: UAE daily

Jun 21 2013, 4:01pm CDT | by

Sharjah, June 22 (IANS/WAM) Russia and the US seem to be heading for an open confrontation after the Group of Eight (G8) summit ended in the failure of Western leaders to overcome Russian resistance to a resolution calling for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, a UAE daily said.

Moscow has announced the dispatch to Syria of two warships carrying 600 Russian marines. They were being sent to Syria, "to protect the Russian citizens there", said an official statement.

"The Russian move is seen as a reflection of President Vladimir Putin's intent to flex military muscle in response to the delivery of Western heavy arms to Syrian rebels fighting the Assad regime," The Gulf Today said in an editorial.

"Putin is also seen as warning the US and its allies if they insisted on arming the rebels, Russia would land troops in Syria in the guise of an operation to evacuate endangered Russian nationals," the Sharjah-based newspaper said.

Some 20,000 Russians are currently living in Syria. In earlier stages of the conflict, they were given the locations of assembly points should Moscow decide to lift them out of the war-torn country.

"As it is, hopes for a successful international effort to find a negotiated solution to the Syrian crisis have disappeared, and now the new danger is that of a US-Russian proxy war in Syria," the report said.

Why Obama Should Ask Congress for an ISIS AUMF

Sep 2 2014 1:06pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama and his national security advisers have some serious thinking to do over the next week on the scope, duration and lethality of U.S. military action against the organization calling itself the Islamic State. To date, the president has relied upon the Article II powers that are granted to his office by the U.S. Constitution, such as the ability of the Commander-in-Chief to take limited military action when U.S. citizens are at risk. ...

How America Made ISIS

Sep 2 2014 8:49am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Their Videos and Ours, Their “Caliphate” and Ours Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com Whatever your politics, you’re not likely to feel great about America right now.  After all, there’s Ferguson (the whole world was watching!), an increasingly unpopular president, a Congress whose approval ratings make the president look like a rock star, rising poverty, weakening wages, and a growing inequality gap just to start what could be a long list.  Abroad, from Libya and Ukrain ...

Donald Trump: Americans 'Embarrassed' by President Obama's Lack of Leadership on Border, ISIS

Sep 1 2014 1:17pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Real estate magnate and reality TV star Donald Trump told Breitbart News that Americans feel “embarrassed” by the lack of leadership from President Barack Obama with the assortment of global and domestic crises dominating the news right now. “They are so disappointed in their country,” Trump said in a phone interview when asked how Americans feel when they see the unsecured U.S. border with Mexico, the global ...

The Challenges in Defeating ISIS

Aug 27 2014 1:11pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Containing and ultimately defeating ISIS will require both short and long-term response. ISIS expansion has been made possible by political conditions in Syria and Iraq, ethnic-religious/sectarian divisions and violence and terror in the region, and the failures of the US and international community. Bashar al-Assad's unprincipled and disproportionate military response to the "threat" of the democratization wave, the Arab Spring, with the slaughter of Syrian ...

Exclusive–Rand Paul: Hillary's 'War Hawk' Policies Led to Benghazi Attack, Rise of ISIS

Aug 27 2014 11:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) certainly has a knack for boldness. On Sunday's Meet the Press, he dubbed U.S. military engagement in Libya “Hillary’s war” and stated the rise of the Islamic State (ISIS) is not a result of President Obama's inaction in the Middle East but the unintended consequence of the U.S. military engagement in Libya. The comments predictably caused heads in the GOP's foreign policy establishment to explode. The Washington Post's J ...

Women Volunteer for Sexual Jihad with Islamic State

Aug 27 2014 11:38am CDT | Source: Big Government

Records show that Australian, British, and Malaysian women travel to Iraq and Syria to participate in jihad al-nikah, or sexual jihad, for the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists. They intend to become comfort women for the jihadists as the men continue to establish a Caliphate in Iraq and Syria. "These women are believed to have offered themselves in sexual comfort roles to ISIS fighters who are attempting to establish Islamic rule in the Middle ...

For Obama, an Indispensable Lesson from the Middle East

Aug 26 2014 4:31pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

President Barack Obama, who by any measure is a smart and shrewd politician, must be feeling rather foolish nowadays. Not only have his predictions proved wrong about Iraq and al-Qaeda, but, under his watch, America is also being drawn back into the Iraq quagmire three years after it withdrew. The president was all optimistic when he secured U.S. withdrawal from Iraq in 2011. But his claim of "extraordinary achievement", of leaving behind a "sovereign, ...

An Islamic braggart's last words

Aug 25 2014 6:26pm CDT | Source: WND

“God willing, we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House.” That was the statement of the Islamic State press officer Abu Mosa, just before he was killed by Syrian forces loyal to dictator Bashar al-Assad, whose regime also is fighting against the Islamic State, or ISIS. The Washington Times also quoted Mosa declaring: “Don’t be cowards and attack us with drones. Instead, send your soldiers, the ones we humiliated in Iraq. We will humiliate them everywhere, God wi ...

ISIS and the Obama Administration's Drumbeat of War

Aug 22 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Is the man who ran for President as the anti-war candidate about to take America to war in Iraq and Syria? Listening to the Obama administration this week, it certainly sounds that way. U.S. engagement with ISIS started as a kind of quasi-humanitarian mission. Earlier this month, President Obama indicated the main goal of the strikes and of military support to Iraq and the Kurds was "preventing an act of genocide." But after the murder of journalist James Foley, the U.S. has steppe ...
