Russia, US heading for confrontation over Syria: UAE daily

Jun 21 2013, 4:01pm CDT | by

Sharjah, June 22 (IANS/WAM) Russia and the US seem to be heading for an open confrontation after the Group of Eight (G8) summit ended in the failure of Western leaders to overcome Russian resistance to a resolution calling for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, a UAE daily said.

Moscow has announced the dispatch to Syria of two warships carrying 600 Russian marines. They were being sent to Syria, "to protect the Russian citizens there", said an official statement.

"The Russian move is seen as a reflection of President Vladimir Putin's intent to flex military muscle in response to the delivery of Western heavy arms to Syrian rebels fighting the Assad regime," The Gulf Today said in an editorial.

"Putin is also seen as warning the US and its allies if they insisted on arming the rebels, Russia would land troops in Syria in the guise of an operation to evacuate endangered Russian nationals," the Sharjah-based newspaper said.

Some 20,000 Russians are currently living in Syria. In earlier stages of the conflict, they were given the locations of assembly points should Moscow decide to lift them out of the war-torn country.

"As it is, hopes for a successful international effort to find a negotiated solution to the Syrian crisis have disappeared, and now the new danger is that of a US-Russian proxy war in Syria," the report said.

7 Things to Consider Before Choosing Sides in the Middle East Conflict

Jul 28 2014 1:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Are you "pro-Israel" or "pro-Palestine"? It isn't even noon yet as I write this, and I've already been accused of being both. These terms intrigue me because they directly speak to the doggedly tribal nature of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You don't hear of too many other countries being universally spoken of this way. Why these two? Both Israelis and Palestinians are complex, with diverse histories and cultures, and two incre ...

Why More Israelis Should Die

Jul 28 2014 10:04am CDT | Source: Big Government

To remedy the simply awful tragedy of not enough Israelis dying as a result of Hamas rocket attacks, something must be done! Send in NATO, bomb an old people’s home, send in UN inspectors to dismantle the Iron Dome systems! It simply is not fair! Such would be the twisted logic that the anti-Israeli crowd are peddling at the moment. Supposed moral outrage points to the heavy casualties suffered by Gazans, and asks, ...

They have a storied history of brutality throughout Iraq and Syria, with no sign that they will stop committing atrocities. Despite the extensive harm they have done to the people of Syria for more than a year, the United Nations is just now ...

Too Many Mujahideen, Not Enough Engineers Crippling ISIS's 'Socialist' Project in Syria

Jul 25 2014 12:02pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), has had months to establish its jihadist rule of terror in Raqqa, Syria, its "capital." As The New York Times reports, ISIS is stealing from banks and redistributing taxes into social welfare and infrastructure, but has been set back by a lack of vocational education. The New York Times sent an unnamed reporter to Raqqa, to experience first-hand what it is t ...

Bahrain's Jihadist Dilemma

Jul 19 2014 11:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In recent years Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have waged crackdowns on local Muslim Brotherhood (MB) movements and their alleged sympathizers under the banner of combating "global terrorism." These governments claim that the MB's rhetoric, espousing peaceful democratic reform, is disingenuous, and that it is actually committed to violently overthrowing the Gulf's monarchies. At the heart of the ...

How America's Policies Sealed Iraq's Fate [This essay is a joint TomDispatch/Truthout report.] For Americans, it was like the news from nowhere.  Years had passed since reporters bothered to head for the country we invaded and blew a hole through back in 2003, the country once known as Iraq that our occupation drove into a never-ending sectarian nightmare.  In 2011, the last U.S. combat troops slipped out of the ...

A man who had left the terrorist jihadist group Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), tells the BBC that the terrorist group uses young, brainwashed foreign men to impose a very specific, oppressive form of Sharia law-- and kill anyone who stands in its way. The man, who did not give his name and hid his face from BBC's reporters for fear of himself or his family--still in Syria--being killed, explained ...

Israel's 10th War: What's Next

Jul 15 2014 1:30pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As the war between Israel and Hamas flares up, most attention naturally focuses on Hamas rockets and Israeli air strikes and reserve call-ups. But, it is equally important to understand those broader factors that will govern the conduct of the war and its likely outcome. In this war Israel enjoys several advantages in Operation Preventive Edge against Hamas that it lacked last time around. First, and foremost, there is now an implicit understanding between ...
