Changing environment to impact global business: UN

Jun 21 2013, 11:12pm CDT | by

London, June 22 (IANS) The future of the private sector will increasingly hinge on the ability of businesses to adapt to the world's rapidly changing environment, according to a UN report.

London, June 22 — The future of the private sector will increasingly hinge on the ability of businesses to adapt to the world's rapidly changing environment, according to a UN report.

The report titled "GEO-5 for Business: Impacts of a Changing Environment on the Corporate Sector" was released by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in the British capital, Xinhua reported.

It analysed the potential risks to 10 different sectors of the economy, and also the opportunities that many companies could grasp if they develop goods and services that can reduce the impacts of environmental concerns.

"From extreme weather events, to rising pressures on finite natural resources, changes in the global environment will increasingly impact operating costs, markets for products, the availability of raw materials, and the reputation of businesses," the UNEP document said.

In the tourism sector, for example, a 1.4-2.2 degree Celsius rise in average winter temperatures would likely mean the closure of more than half of the ski resorts operating in the northeastern US in 30 years.

As for water scarcity, it said platinum mines in South Africa's Olifants River system faced 10 times higher water charges by 2020 as they compete with local communities for the ever scarcer commodity.

The report also outlines key recommendations for each of the 10 sectors, including building and construction, chemicals, power, extractives, finance, food and beverage, healthcare, IT, tourism, and transport.

"The report speaks to the reality of climate change and natural resource scarcities," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

"It makes the case that whether it be in water saving, or climate-proofing infrastructure, the world is going to look for solutions that in turn will drive corporate competitiveness, reputation risk and a transition to an inclusive green economy," he said.

Jul 30 2014 1:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon spoke Wednesday at a summit in Costa Rica where he placed blame on Israel for an attack at a UN school in Gaza. Not once mentioning Hamas in his speech, Ban said: This morning, yet another United Nations school sheltering thousands of Palestinian families suffered a reprehensible attack. All available evidence points to Israeli artillery as the cause. Nothing is more shameful than attacking sleep ...

Panic among 'sustainability' tyrants

Jul 30 2014 12:07pm CDT | Source: WND

(American Policy Center) — The attacks came fast and furious, from March through June. A coordinated attack to vilify, ostracize and neutralize efforts by local citizen activists who are standing in opposition to Agenda 21 and its policy called Sustainable Development. The terms “conspiracy theory,” “extremists,” “fear mongers,” and “far right,” are all over these obvious attempts to smear any opposition to the agenda of the Sustainablist planners that now swarm over nearly every commun ...

School of Rockets: terrorists take advantage of the U.N.

Jul 30 2014 11:13am CDT | Source: Big Government

I see one of Joel's ten winners and losers from the Gaza War is the United Nations, dumped into the "loser" column because Hamas rockets have been found in schools built by the U.N. Relief Works Agency.  The first time one of these classroom ammo dumps was discovered, the U.N. feigned comical "Captain Renault" surprise that terrorists had been caught making use of its facilities.   Well, now we're up to the third discove ...

Media Looking for a Tragedy Big Enough to Stop Gaza War

Jul 30 2014 8:09am CDT | Source: Big Government

The mainstream media know their role in the Gaza conflict: to find--or create--a disaster big enough to create an international outcry that will stop the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). First, they tried using the deaths of four boys on the beach in Gaza. Then, they tried using the attack on Al-Shifa hospital--which turned out to have been hit by Palestinian rocket fire. Now they have a new candidate: ...
