Mandela's condition still serious but stable

Jun 22 2013, 6:00pm CDT | by

Johannesburg, June 23 (IANS) Anti-apartheid icon and South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, the Presidency said.

Johannesburg, June 23 — Anti-apartheid icon and South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, the Presidency said.

The announcement came as the ailing 94-year-old Mandela Saturday spent his 14th day in hospital in Pretoria. He was admitted with the serious lung infection June 8, Xinhua reported.

"We thank the public for support and for respecting the privacy of the former president and his family," the Presidency said in a statement.

The Presidency confirmed a media report that the military ambulance transporting Mandela June 8 from his residence in Johannesburg to Pretoria had an engine failure but it was soon replaced by another military ambulance.

"The doctors were satisfied that Mandela suffered no harm during this period," the statement said.

"We appeal again that his privacy be respected and that he be accorded the doctor-patient confidentiality that all patients are entitled to in terms of medical ethics," the Presidency said.

This is the third time that Mandela has been admitted to hospital this year. On March 27, he was hospitalised after doctors diagnosed him with pneumonia.

He was also admitted in December 2012 for his recurring lung infection.

Fox News Pundit Winds Up On The Terrorist Watch List

Sep 23 2014 3:30pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Department Of Homeland Security is known for being somewhat overzealous with its terrorist watch list—Nelson Mandela was infamously on the list as late as 2008, for instance. Hundreds of thousands of people are routinely placed on the list, often for very minimal reasons. On Tuesday, the world got another glimpse into the baffling choices the federal government sometimes makes when conservative wr ...

Hope, Voting and Creating the World You Want to Live In

Sep 16 2014 11:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This article originally appeared at TheNation.com We live in a time fraught with bad news. From the toll of violence and poverty to the escalating march of climate change, every week brings temptations to despair. Hope may actually be more beleaguered in the wake of a president who won the office in part by branding himself with it. Many have concluded that political participation has become a futile game. For myself, I deal with potential despair by finding ways to act. And rememb ...

Putin: The Psyche of the Modern Dictator

Sep 5 2014 10:46am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Dictators have always existed. They have taken many forms. We can go back to Rome, to the rise of Julius Caesar; an ancient democratic state that became psychologically convinced it was safer, and easier, to trust the power of a single person over the power of the people collectively. We can look to more modern examples, like Stalin, who took over a state that was already a dictatorship, and use ...

Breitbart's Sonnie Johnson 'Changes the Game'

Sep 2 2014 7:24pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Over the last four years, I've traveled all over the country and spoken with thousands of patriots. I've met new friends and built partnerships that will last a lifetime. I've learned policy, procedure, and principles. It's been a great ride. What I haven’t seen is any substantial success with respect to conservative outreach to the black community. The inner cities of America are pimped by the Democrat ...

Gaza as Seen by a Progressive Zionist

Aug 28 2014 4:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a progressive (or "liberal" as I grew up calling myself), I've been troubled by the divide I've seen in the progressive community over the Israeli-Hamas conflict. While there are many good progressives on the national scene who, as I do, support Israel enthusiastically, I have also seen the unmistakable strain of anti-Israeli sentiment on the part of progressives I know, read, or interact with on social media ...

Ferguson protesters invoke Che – oh, the irony!

Aug 26 2014 6:40pm CDT | Source: WND

By Humberto Fontova When a comedian’s “brilliant” witticism bombs he’ll often complain to the “dumb” audience that: “The irony is lost on you people!” In this spirit of “lost irony” I give you (pro) Michael-Brown protesters wearing Che Guevara T-Shirts at Ferguson demonstrations. Why “lost irony,” some readers might ask? “Don’t Shoot!” is the Ferguson demonstrator slogan/chant, right? Well, upon his ve ...

Former South African President Calls for Boycott of Israel

Aug 12 2014 8:32am CDT | Source: Big Government

South Africa's ex-President Thabo Mbeki has called for a boycott of Israeli goods to show solidarity with Palestinians. The public should mobilise against Israel so that it "does pay a price for the position that it is taking", Mr Mbeki said in the capital, Pretoria. About 2,000 people, mostly Palestinians, have died in the conflict in Gaza since July. Most South Africans have historically supported the Palestinians. BBC South Africa analyst Farouk Chothia says th ...

Aug 6 2014 3:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama called on African nations Wednesday to forcefully tackle health crises, security challenges and government corruption that could stymie the continent's economic progress, as he concluded an unprecedented summit. The summit, aimed in part at cultivating an Obama legacy on a continent where his family ties run deep, also marked a rare return to Washington for former President George W. Bush, who launched a $15 billion HIV/AIDS initiative w ...
