Obama unveils first US national climate action plan

Jun 25 2013, 6:12pm CDT | by

Washington, June 26 (IANS) US President Barack Obama has unveiled the country's first national climate action plan, pledging to limit carbon emissions from American power plants.

Washington, June 26 — US President Barack Obama has unveiled the country's first national climate action plan, pledging to limit carbon emissions from American power plants.

Delivering a speech at Georgetown University, Obama said the planet is changing in ways that will impact all of humankind, and that the 12 warmest years in recorded history have all come in the last 15 years.

"Americans across the country are already paying the price of inaction. As a president, as a father, and as an American, I'm here to say -- We need to act," Xinhua quoted Obama as saying.

The president noted that power plants, which currently represent one-third of all US carbon emissions, "can still dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air for free".

"That's not right ... and it needs to stop," he added.

"I'm directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to put an end to the limitless dumping of carbon pollution from our power plants."

Obama described a low carbon clean energy economy as being an engine of growth for decades to come.

"There's no contradiction between a sound environment and strong economic growth," said Obama.

"Using less dirty energy, transitioning to cleaner sources of energy, wasting less energy ... is where we need to go."

Obama said he was directing the Department of the Interior to greenlight enough private renewable energy capacity on public lands to power more than six million homes by 2020.

He asked the federal government to consume 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources within the next seven years.

The president also set a goal to reduce carbon pollution by at least three billion metric tonnes cumulatively by 2030, more than half of the annual carbon pollution from the US energy sector.

"Although every statewide elected official in Kansas is a Republican and President Obama lost the state by more than 20 points in the last election," Gov. Sam Brownback's (R) "proudly conservative policies have turned out to be so divisive and his tax cuts have generated such a drop in state revenue that they have caused even many Republicans to revolt," the New York Times reports. "Projections put state budget sh ...

Exclusive - Princeton's Robert George: 'Victory' Against ISIS Means They're Destroyed Like Adolf Hitler's SS

Sep 15 2014 12:47am CDT | Source: Big Government

Princeton’s McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence told Breitbart News that American “victory” against ISIS means that ISIS must be destroyed as Adolf Hitler's Schutzstaffel (SS) forces were. “Let me tell you what victory looks like: ISIS/ISIL is decimated. It is left in precisely the shape in which we left Hitler's allegedly invincible SS in 1945,” George said in a statement provided to Breitbart News. “Those of its leaders who are not sent to their eternal rewar ...

Iowa Dems: Hillary Too Tied to Cronyism, 'Malleable' like Romney

Sep 14 2014 9:39pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Young Iowa Democrats still associate Hillary Clinton with crony capitalism nearly seven years after progressive Iowans rejected her for Barack Obama.  Before Clinton returned to the state on Sunday for the first time since 2008, MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell interviewed young Iowa Democrats for "Meet the Press."  A law student told Mitchell that he was looking for someone more liberal than Clinton who talks about "income inequality." He said Cl ...

The warnings were delivered on pink paper – depleting all supplies ...

'Hillary just as radical as Obama'

Sep 14 2014 7:11pm CDT | Source: WND

Hillary Clinton NEW YORK – Hillary Clinton’s only chance for the presidency is to persuade Americans that Barack Obama’s foreign policy is fundamentally sound and that she’s more moderate than Obama is, says former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton. “She still is yet to separate herself from his foreign policy, and I don’t think she can because she was part of it,” Bolton said on Aaron Klein’s Investigative Radio Sunday ni ...

Is America under God's judgment? - $4.95 today only!

Sep 14 2014 7:00pm CDT | Source: WND

At first blush, it sounds like one more Bible verse: “The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycamores are cut down, but we will change them into cedars.” While devoted Bible students might recognize that verse from Isaiah 9:10, it’s hardly a widely discussed scripture. But that may be changing with the recent release of  an extraordinary and highly anticipated book, which has already become a major bestseller. And today only, WND readers can get the ...
