Obama unveils first US national climate action plan

Jun 25 2013, 6:12pm CDT | by

Washington, June 26 (IANS) US President Barack Obama has unveiled the country's first national climate action plan, pledging to limit carbon emissions from American power plants.

Washington, June 26 — US President Barack Obama has unveiled the country's first national climate action plan, pledging to limit carbon emissions from American power plants.

Delivering a speech at Georgetown University, Obama said the planet is changing in ways that will impact all of humankind, and that the 12 warmest years in recorded history have all come in the last 15 years.

"Americans across the country are already paying the price of inaction. As a president, as a father, and as an American, I'm here to say -- We need to act," Xinhua quoted Obama as saying.

The president noted that power plants, which currently represent one-third of all US carbon emissions, "can still dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air for free".

"That's not right ... and it needs to stop," he added.

"I'm directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to put an end to the limitless dumping of carbon pollution from our power plants."

Obama described a low carbon clean energy economy as being an engine of growth for decades to come.

"There's no contradiction between a sound environment and strong economic growth," said Obama.

"Using less dirty energy, transitioning to cleaner sources of energy, wasting less energy ... is where we need to go."

Obama said he was directing the Department of the Interior to greenlight enough private renewable energy capacity on public lands to power more than six million homes by 2020.

He asked the federal government to consume 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources within the next seven years.

The president also set a goal to reduce carbon pollution by at least three billion metric tonnes cumulatively by 2030, more than half of the annual carbon pollution from the US energy sector.

Aug 26 2014 10:36pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mark Steyn, columnist and author of “Lights Out: Islam, Free Speech And The Twilight of the West,”  blasted President Barack Obama’s foreign policy on Tuesday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel.   Steyn characterized Obama’s beliefs on the war on terror as “if he doesn’t acknowledge it, it’s not happening.” And that “simply standing there and prissily unleashing some faculty lounge bromide makes it so.” He added “if there is ...

Charlie Crist has won the Democratic primary in the Florida governor's race, the Associated Press reports. Have you been 'Shocked by the Bible'?

Aug 26 2014 7:00pm CDT | Source: WND

In an age when Christianity is openly under attack, one book that champions the Bible as absolute truth is surprising even longtime Christians with amazing facts many people simply don’t know are included in the pages of Holy Scripture. “If you think you really know the Bible, better think again,” warns Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “Your parents never told you this stuff was in the Bible,” adds radio talker and ...

A midterm strategy for GOP

Aug 26 2014 6:55pm CDT | Source: WND

Has the Republican Party even noticed that we’re just over two months away from an important midterm election? Maybe it’s a stupid question. But I ask because I can’t discern that Republicans have any grand plan to expand what promises to be a sweeping and resounding victory Nov. 4. Instead, they appear content to rely on dissatisfaction with Barack Obama and the Democratic way. That’s all well and good. However, it would be nice if the Republicans had some kind of vision for capitalizi ...

If Obama were a real commander in chief

Aug 26 2014 6:50pm CDT | Source: WND

That little girl won our hearts during the Vietnam War by asking her father, “What if they gave a war and nobody showed up?” What a horror she’d have unleashed if her question had been, “What if they gave a war and only one side showed up?” Well, here we are! Speak to me not of American air strikes against ISIS. If we’d fought World War II with the same ways, means and attitude that we’re deploying against ISIS today, we’d still be sending rafts after midnight ...

Marco Rubio Hints At A Government Shutdown Fight Over Immigration

Aug 26 2014 6:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) contends that unilateral action by President Barack Obama on immigration, which is expected this fall, will doom future chances for reform by poisoning the well in Congress. The one-time champion for comprehensive immigration reform wants Senate Republicans to combat the likely executive action through the budget process when Congress returns in September. "There will have to be some so ...
