Sperm banks struggle to attract donors in China

Jun 30 2013, 7:22am CDT | by

Beijing, June 30 (IANS) Almost three decades after China opened its first sperm bank, such fertility institutions are dealing with a worsening shortage of healthy sperm, despite repeated efforts to recruit more donors.

Beijing, June 30 — Almost three decades after China opened its first sperm bank, such fertility institutions are dealing with a worsening shortage of healthy sperm, despite repeated efforts to recruit more donors.

"It feels weird to know that someone you meet on the street some day could be your child," said Zhou Zheng, a sperm donor from north China's Hebei province.

Zhou now has complicated feelings about the donation he made a decade ago, Xinhua reported.

Back then, Zhou was a college student who decided to donate sperm out of compassion for reproductively challenged couples. But the thought of being the biological father of a child he does not know scared him away from doing it again.

According to Chinese law, sperm donated by one person can be used to impregnate up to five women. This means that Zhou, who is married with his own child, could actually have as many as six offspring.

"Knowing I might have five other kids out there really freaks me out," he said.

Statistics from the China Population Association at the end of 2012 showed that 40 million people have fertility issues, accounting for 12.5 percent of the population aged between 20 to 49. The ratio increased from three percent two decades ago.

China's first sperm bank opened in central Hunan province.

But at the Hebei Human Sperm Bank, qualified sperm is in shortage.

The sperm bank's director Zhao Bangrong said there are currently 700 couples waiting for sperm, but the bank only had 200 volunteer donors in the first six months of the year, compared to 650 volunteers during the same period last year.

Not all volunteers can donate. Only 20 percent meet the requirements set by health authorities.

People with hereditary diseases or those who have been exposed to radioactivity, or those who have a history of heavy smoking or drinking, are not permitted to donate.

People also incorrectly assume that being disqualified for donation means they have reproductive problems. Such fears have driven potential donors even further away.

Another factor is cultural perceptions. Some do not think of donating because they believe it amounts to betrayal of one's ancestral bloodline, which according to traditional beliefs should be preserved within one's family.

In China, sperm donation is also somewhat embarrassing in a society that still struggles with public discussion of sex-related topics.

Environmental pollution, unsafe food and mounting work pressure are all reducing the odds of a successful and healthy pregnancy, doctors say.

Sperm shortage and growing infertility have also spurred illegal insemination in the underground market.

To ease the shortage, sperm banks across China have launched campaigns to show sperm donation in a better light and attract potential donors.

MH17: An Unintended Consequence

Jul 23 2014 10:41am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Russian President Vladimir Putin Visits Samara
The evidence indicating that MH17 was shot down by a Russian-made radar guided Surface to Air Missile (SAM) is compelling. The perpetrators, on the other hand, will be harder to discern, requiring independent forensic experts to sift through the vast debris field created by the jet breaking up at a speed of over 500mph and at an altitude of 33,000ft. The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) will once ag ...

The Obamanation explained

Jul 22 2014 6:15pm CDT | Source: WND

China's Muslim's Observe Ramadan
The question has been asked many times over the last five years: What is Barack Obama doing? Why is he inviting massive numbers of illegal aliens, including children, to risk their lives to swarm our southern border? Why has he created a national health-care system that is unsustainable economically in the long term and is creating crisis in the short term? Why is he turning down the opportunity to buy oil from our neighbor to the north a ...

China's Muslim's Observe Ramadan
What’s the deal with Hollywood? Usually they fall all over themselves to get to a microphone to pontificate about the latest injustice in the world. So how come we only hear crickets about the crisis on the border? The humanitarian crisis taking place on our border with Mexico is nothing new. It has been brewing for years, even decades, and most of the voices warning of the impending disaster fell ...

China's Muslim's Observe Ramadan
Hello, world. My name is Israel. Can we talk? If you’re reluctant to shake my hand, let me assure you of my legitimacy. In fact, I’m the most legitimate nation on earth! My claim to my little slice of land is endorsed by the Bible and the United Nations. Russia is half the size of the moon. Is Russia’s existence legitimized by the Bible and the U.N.? Or Britain’s, China’s, Germany’s, France’s, America’s? I’m told I’m good at fighting. I hate tha ...

Vladimir Putin’s Awkward, Hypocritical Relationship With Separatists

Jul 22 2014 1:28pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Will Freeman is an intern with Think Progress. CREDIT: AP Images Russia just passed a new law promising increased penalties, including heavy fines or up to four years in prison, for making public calls for separatism — the ultimate irony for a country that is actively fueling a separatist movement just over the border in Ukraine. Over the years, President Vladimir Putin has made it his trademark in speeches and even New York Times op-eds to call out the U.S. on flo ...

Stop Inversions with Tax Cuts

Jul 22 2014 1:23pm CDT | Source: Downsizing Government

Chris EdwardsThe corporate inversion trend tells us that global tax competition is intense and that U.S. tax reform is long overdue. Our combined federal-state corporate tax rate of 40 percent is far higher than the rates of our trading partners. Inversions are a bid by companies to create self-help tax reform while Congress sits on its hands.U.S. companies compete in foreign markets against firms based in countries that have lower tax rates and that exempt for ...

Downing of MH-17, Ukrainian Crisis Lay Bare US, European Weakness

FC Bayern Muenchen v Arsenal - UEFA Champions League Round of 16
The downing of Malaysia flight MH17 casts new light on just how inept and decadent the United States and Europe have become. Faced with Russia’s annexation of the Crimea and attempts to repeat in eastern Ukraine, the best Western Europe and the United States have mustered are strong words and token sanctions on top Russian officials and several companies. That’s hardly enough to deter Vladimir Putin’s ambitions to make Russia the dominant power in Eurasia. Now, public outra ...
