Mandela not in vegetative state: South African government

Jul 4 2013, 7:54pm CDT | by

Johannesburg, July 5 (IANS) The South African government has dismissed media reports that said anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was in a permanent vegetative state with a life support machine keeping him alive in hospital.

Johannesburg, July 5 — The South African government has dismissed media reports that said anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela was in a permanent vegetative state with a life support machine keeping him alive in hospital.

"The Presidency has noted media reports about the condition of former president Mandela and would like to make a clarification," Xinhua quoted the Presidency as saying in a statement.

On Thursday, some South African media report said Mandela was in a permanent vegetative state and that a life support machine was keeping him alive.

"We confirm our earlier statement released this afternoon (Thursday) after President Jacob Zuma visited Madiba (Mandela) in hospital that Madiba remains in a critical but stable condition," the Presidency said.

"The doctors deny that the former president is in a vegetative state," the statement added.

"Mandela remains under the care of a multi-disciplinary panel of South African medical experts," it said.

On Thursday, the 94-year-old former president spent his 26th day at the Pretoria hospital since he was admitted there June 8 with a recurring lung infection.

Earlier Thursday, Mandela's wife Graca Machel said the former president may at times be uncomfortable and feel pain, but he was fine.

Graca was speaking at the launch of a new sports initiative at the Nelson Mandela Centre for Memory in Johannesburg.

President Zuma has called on all South Africans to volunteer 67 minutes of their time on International Nelson Mandela Day, which falls July 18, to help change their communities and South Africa for the better.

This year's event will take place under the theme of "Take action; inspire change; make every day a Mandela Day" with focus on food security, shelter and literacy.

The Gaza War and Anti-Semitism

Jul 29 2014 9:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I keep reading outraged comments from Jewish organizations and media condemning those (like me) who believe and say that the Gaza war is resulting in a spike in anti-Semitism. (They agree that incidents of anti-Semitism are increasing but reject the idea that it has anything to do with Israeli actions.) Their argument makes no sense. It goes like this. Anti-Semitism is not caused by anything. It is innate, a poison ...

The Lamp Beside the Golden Door: Protecting Refugee Children at our Borders

Jul 27 2014 7:46pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Nelson Mandela once said, "We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear." That phrase from the Noble Prize-winning global beacon should be our only mandate as we address the incendiary situation along the border as desperate droves of children fleeing violence in Central America for the refuge of the United States are met with an often impenetrable fence of antipathy.  Conversely, America has had a ...

Commons Speaker John Bercow Strengthens His Position Despite Disastrous 12 Months

Jul 22 2014 2:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

John Bercow has had a rather difficult year. Twelve months ago, the Speaker of the House of Commons suffered public humiliation at the hands of Conservative MPs, who passed to the press physical evidence of so-called "Bollocked By Bercow" badges they were secretly wearing to subvert him. The badges were designed by backbencher Simon Burns, who famously muttered that Bercow was a "stupid, sanctimonious dwarf", only to apologise to dwarves f ...

CANTERBURY, England (RNS) Three leading Anglicans have entered an explosive debate about whether it is permissible for Christians to allow doctors in England and Wales to administer lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients given less than six months to live. Scott Esk, Republican Candidate In Oklahoma, Says It's OK To Stone Gays To Death

Jun 11 2014 11:43pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Scott Esk, a Republican Tea Party candidate in Oklahoma, got into a debate on Facebook last summer in which he advocated killing homosexuals. “I think we would be totally in the right to do it,” Esk wrote in comments uncovered by Oklahoma journalist Rob Morris. “That goes against some parts of libertarianism, I realize, and I’m largely libertarian, but ignoring as a nation things that are worthy of death is very remiss.” When pressed, Esk added: "I never said I would author le ...

Bergdahl Six-Month-Old 'Proof of Life' Video Used to Justify Rushed Trade

Jun 5 2014 11:35am CDT | Source: Big Government

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has said in repeated public statements that the decision to trade five high-ranking Taliban officials' freedom for the life of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was made at this time "to save his life." The Obama administration did not act immediately, however, as the video used to justify the trade deal was reportedly obtained in January. "It was our judgment that if we could find an opening, we needed to get him out of there, essentially to save his l ...

At a Senate intelligence briefing given by the White House’s Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken, members watched a “proof of life” video made by Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s Taliban captors late last year. According to Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) Kirk, Bergdahl appeared weak but spoke English and referenced the passing of South African President Nelson Mandela. Mandela died on December 5, 2013. “He didn’t ...
