Death toll in Egypt's clashes rises to 32

Jul 6 2013, 7:00am CDT | by

Cairo, July 6 (IANS) At least 32 people were killed and more than 1,100 injured overnight in Egypt during clashes between opponents and supporters of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, officials said Saturday.

Cairo, July 6 — At least 32 people were killed and more than 1,100 injured overnight in Egypt during clashes between opponents and supporters of deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, officials said Saturday.

"Thirty-two people were killed and 1,138 were injured in Friday's clashes in 19 governorates, of whom 1,076 were moved to hospitals," Mohamed Sultan, head of the Egyptian Ambulance Organization, told Xinhua.

According to the health ministry, seven people were killed in the capital Cairo and 12 in Alexandria. Hundreds were injured in violence across the country.

The nationwide turmoil was sparked by a statement by the armed forces ousting the Islamist-oriented president Morsi Wednesday in response to massive protests demanding his removal.

Islamist supporters of Morsi rejected the ouster as "a military coup" and vowed to struggle for "Morsi's legitimacy."

On Friday evening, clashes erupted between Morsi supporters and opponents when crowds of pro-Morsi protesters marched to the Oct 6 Bridge near Tahrir Square on their way to the state TV building to protest against the ouster of Morsi.

They were confronted by Morsi's opponents who have been celebrating his removal.

In the early hours of Saturday, unknown militants attacked three checkpoints and the central security forces in Arish city in North Sinai.

On Thursday, hundreds of gunmen attacked Arish Airport, a security camp in Rafah, a police station and two security checkpoints in Sheikh Zewaid with heavy artillery and RPGs in North Sinai, leaving a soldier dead.

The continuous one-million-man protests in all Egyptian governorates are "the practical path to preserve the gains of the second wave of the Egyptian revolution", said a statement.

Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei, nominated to a vice president post, said Saturday that "affiliation to the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, isn't a crime, and the army intervention was the less painful alternative.

"The other option was a civil war," ElBaradei told the London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper, adding it wasn't a military coup.

ElBaradei added that a series of arrests were precautionary and security procedures to avoid inciting violence, asserting that Morsi was treated in a very gentle way by the security forces when detained.

He added that a decision to shut down religious channels was based on charges of inciting violence, adding that big quantities of weapon were seized from such channels.

On Wednesday, the army announced it was ousting Morsi and appointing Adli Mansour, head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, as interim president during the transitional period.

Since then, Muslim Brotherhood's leading figures have been arrested.

General-Prosecutor Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud ordered a travel ban on the ousted president and other 35 Muslim Brotherhood figures over charges of killing protestors.

Islamist Sharia Supporters group said the army intervention to oust the "legitimate" president was "a war against Islam", calling, in a statement on its website, for "using violence to impose Sharia (Islamic rules)."

"The army's intervention to oust our president, closure of Islamic channels and killing Islamist protesters are a war against Islam in Egypt," it said.

The statement blamed the latest events on liberals and armed forces. It also condemned democracy and called for enforcing the Sharia rules.

Hamas using GPS-guided mortars from Russia

Aug 27 2014 7:31pm CDT | Source: WND

TEL AVIV – In the week leading up to Tuesday’s cease-fire announcement, Hamas deployed an alarming new weapon: Russian-manufactured mortars with accurate GPS capabilities. Senior Egyptian security officials say Hamas purchased the precision mortars from rebels who looted Muammar Gadhafi’s reserves after the Libyan strongman was toppled by a U.S.-NATO campaign in 2011. The rebels also reportedly acquired thousands of shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, or MANPADS, said to be capable ...

Monkey Cage: Why Egypt’s military orchestrated a massacre

Aug 22 2014 12:41pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

The Rabaa massacre of Aug. 14, 2013, was Egypt’s Tiananmen Square. Egyptian security forces killed at least 817 people on a single day at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square alone, and more than 1,000 when including the number of casualties across Egypt. It was the biggest mass killing of civilians in modern Egyptian history. The butchery did not take place under the cover of darkness, or in a remote corner of the country, but in broad daylight in Cairo. I was one of a number of jo ...

Senior Fatah Source: Qatar Pushed Hamas to Break Ceasefire

Aug 20 2014 9:18am CDT | Source: Big Government

Why did the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas suddenly break down on Tuesday, even before its expiration? Why would Hamas, in the middle of negotiations and without pretense of provocation, fire rocket barrages against Israel? According to Israel National News, "A senior member of Palestnian [sic] Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction said Wednesday Hamas's choice to forego the Egyptian truce proposal and return to its rocket war on Israel was due to Qat ...

The Anatomy of an Unfair Trial

Aug 18 2014 4:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sentencing a political opponent to death after a show trial is no different to taking him out on the street and shooting him. In fact, it is worse because using the court system as a tool of state repression makes a mockery of the rule of law. Egypt's constitution guarantees the right to be presumed innocent. And yet in a recent case, an Egyptian judge -- after a "trial" lasting 100 minute ...

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

Aug 8 2014 10:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”   In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's drug cartels, climate change, terror ...
