Bolivia offers asylum to Snowden

Jul 8 2013, 1:50am CDT | by

La Paz, July 8 (IANS/EFE) President Evo Morales on the weekend offered political asylum to former CIA analyst Edward Snowden in response to a situation he experienced last week when several European countries denied his aircraft overflight and landing privileges out of fear that Snowden was on board.

La Paz, July 8 (IANS/EFE) President Evo Morales on the weekend offered political asylum to former CIA analyst Edward Snowden in response to a situation he experienced last week when several European countries denied his aircraft overflight and landing privileges out of fear that Snowden was on board.

"(I want to) say to the Europeans and the Americans (that) yesterday I was thinking, as a fair protest I want to tell them ... we're going to give asylum if that American persecuted by his countrymen asks for it. We're not afraid," Morales said during an appearance Saturday.

The president made his announcement at an event with indigenous residents of the Andean Oruro region, at which he was accompanied by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, a Korean-American, who is on his first official visit to Bolivia.

The decision by France, Italy and Portugal last Tuesday to deny passage to Morales' plane, on which he was returning from a summit in Moscow, sparked a serious crisis between Europe and Latin America, with governments in the latter region immediately closing ranks behind the Bolivian leader and harshly condemning the Europeans' move.

Bolivia is including Spain among the offending countries because the Spanish Ambassador in Vienna, Alberto Carnero, said he would like to board the aircraft to personally verify that Snowden was not on board.

However, the government of Mariano Rajoy does not feel that Madrid needs to apologize and insists that it never denied Morales' plane air passage or landing rights in Spanish territory.

The government also noted that Spain allowed the jet to land in the Canary Islands to refuel.

Bolivian Government Minister Carlos Romero Saturday criticized the "arrogant" and "immoral" attitude of Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, who said that his country "does not need to apologize to Bolivia" after the incident.

Snowden has been in the transit zone of the Moscow airport for two weeks while he awaits political asylum in one of the countries where he has requested it, among which is Bolivia, WikiLeaks said on its web site this past week.

ISIS a Jewish Plot? Propaganda and Islamic Jihad

Aug 22 2014 8:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

It took her more than nine years of working in the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, but Yasmina Haifi finally uncovered the secret truth about the Islamic State: It isn't Islamic at all. Actually, it's a Jewish plot. Yes, really: that terrorist group formerly known as ISIS, responsible for acts of genocide in Iraq, for the beheading of American journalist James Foley, and for the murder of countless women and children in their war to establish a new Isla ...

Legal teams gang up on NSA over spy programs

Aug 21 2014 10:09am CDT | Source: WND

A challenge to the National Security Agency’s efforts to spy on Americans has gotten the support of some legal heavyweights in the battle over civil rights across the United States – the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union. Attorney Larry Klayman, of FreedomWatchUSA and a commentary author for WND, obtained a stunning ruling at the trial court level that the programs likely are unconstitutional. The case has been advanced to the U.S. Cour ...

German Intel Spied On Hillary Clinton, John Kerry: Der Spiegel

Aug 16 2014 9:06am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

BERLIN (AP) — Germany's foreign intelligence agency eavesdropped on calls made by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and his predecessor Hillary Clinton, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Saturday. The respected news weekly reported that the agency, known by its German acronym BND, tapped a satellite phone conversation Kerry made in 2013 as part of its surveillance of telecommunications in the Middle East. The agency also recorded a conversation between Clinton and former U.N. Secretar ...

Did a U.S. defense contractor help create the next generation of spyware weapons?

Aug 16 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Washington Post relates a fascinating little cloak-and-dagger story that ends with a heck of a punchline: a U.S. defense contractor was apparently working with the dirtbags who create spyware and virus programs to develop new tools for spying on people, potentially both foreign and domestic. CloudShield Technologies, a California defense contractor, dispatched a senior engineer to Munich in the early fall of 2009. His instructions were unusually opaque. As he boarded the flight ...

Columnist Glenn Greenwald Somehow Blames Israel for Ferguson Riots

Aug 15 2014 5:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Glenn Greenwald, the columnist famed for coming to the support of NSA leaker Edward Snowden, has chimed in on the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, by hinting that Israel is to blame for influencing the police there. Greenwald cited an Iranian activist named Trita Parsi who claimed that "excessive police violence" in Ferguson can be blamed on the fact that the county police chief took a fact-finding trip to Israel in 2011. Parsi tweeted that St. Louis County Chief Ti ...

This week in stupid: Edward Snowden

Aug 15 2014 11:07am CDT | Source: Big Government

Props to WIRED magazine for getting the interview everyone wanted: a full-length on the record with Edward Snowden from his Russian hideout. But that cover! Oh, that cover. The full image has to be seen to be believed. It would have been a provocative sight were Snowden not so comically dorky-looking. And, you know, a traitor.  With the possible exception of Snowden's media accomplice, Glenn Greenw ...

Government Invokes 'Privacy' Exemption To Conceal Secrets

Aug 15 2014 6:33am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When the National Security Agency wanted to block the public release of former contractor Edward Snowden's emails, it found an unlikely ally: His privacy. The government cited a federal law protecting privacy rights to deny journalist Matthew Keys' request for Snowden's messages. Experts said Snowden is far from an exception. From Osama bin Laden to former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, "privacy" claims are the governmen ...

Are the Contours of a Hillary Doctrine Emerging in Iraq?

Aug 14 2014 6:41pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There's an awful lot of handwringing going on in Washington. With each passing day, there seems to be a new excuse for why America can't work by, with, and through our friends and international partners. A leading opponent of interventionist foreign policy, Sen. Rand Paul, recently said of ongoing airstrikes in Iraq, "[I]t concerns me that we would have to do their fighting for them because they won't fight for their own country, their own cities." ...

Challenging Edward Snowden and the information vigilantes

Aug 14 2014 2:52pm CDT | Source: Big Government

I've had strong misgivings about the freelance arbiters of secrecy ever since Wikileaks got off the ground.  Since I'm also institutionally suspicious of the government agencies they raid for information, and particularly suspicious of what the government has mutated into over the past six years, that poses a bit of a dilemma.  Can you respond to the information provided by someone like Edward Snowden, while ...

The United States’ Press Freedom Problem Goes Beyond Ferguson

Aug 14 2014 9:07am CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

Police advance through smoke in Ferguson, Mo. CREDIT: AP Photo/Jeff Roberson Journalists forcibly removed from covering a story. Facing down tear gas and hostile police. Finding themselves under arrest. It’s a situation that is supposed to happen in other countries, not the United States. But last night in Ferguson, MO, journalists found themselves facing exactly those conditions, lending credence to the fact that the United States — despite all its support in its laws and customs — doe ...
