US had ground support in Osama killing: Pakistani report

Jul 10 2013, 6:24am CDT | by

Islamabad, July 10 (IANS) The United States had strong ground support - a fact that went unnoticed by the ISI - during the operation that led to the killing of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, the commission probing the incident maintains.

Islamabad, July 10 — The United States had strong ground support - a fact that went unnoticed by the ISI - during the operation that led to the killing of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011, the commission probing the incident maintains.

The Abbottabad Commission is convinced that the US had an extensive ground network with one Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) network locating him in his compound at Abbottabad and another ascertaining his presence there, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The commission, in its findings, said that the presence of CIA agents for tracking bin Laden was well known prior to 2005 but, surprisingly, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan stopped its manhunt thinking that the US had given up the chase under the assumption that the 9/11 mastermind was dead.

The Dawn report quoted the commission as stating that there was an influx of CIA agents into Pakistan in the form NGO workers after the decline in ISI-CIA links because of the deteorating bilateral ties.

The issuance of a large number of visas by then Pakistani ambassador to the US, Hussain Haqqani, also helped the American spies gain entry to Pakistan, according to the commission's findings.

The evening before the May 2, 2011, US Navy Seals' raid at the bin Laden compound, vans were seen leaving the US embassy for Abbottabad, there were people on the ground telling neighbours of the bin Laden compound to stay indoors, and trees near the compound were cut to facilitate US helicopters to land, all of which support the theory of a strong ground presence.

The ruse of vaccination carried out by the now-jailed doctor, Shakeel Afridi, to conform bin Laden's presence at the location prior to the operation, codenamed Operation Neptune Star, also pointed to a strong ground network, the newspaper quoted the commission as stating.

The commission also found that the ISI did not notice the strong CIA network and, after the operation, did little to unearth the network except for the Pakistan military reducing the number of known CIA agents in the country, the newspaper said.

Obama's Fighting A New Kind Of War -- While Critics Are Stuck in the Past

Oct 21 2014 1:20pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Critics of Obama's war strategy seem to want him to fight a new kind of war with old weapons. As I described last time, they judge success and failure by traditional measures -- in particular, by who controls how much ground. But in a new kind of war -- counterinsurgency -- such measures don't always apply, at least not in the same way. Think about all the anxiety over how much territory I ...

Republican Right Embraces Its Long, Hypocritical Tradition of Pandering to Fear

Oct 14 2014 7:07am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

They're back. Like the fourth sequel to a bad horror movie, the Republican Right has once again chosen to embrace its long ignoble, hypocritical tradition of pandering to - and stoking -- fear. As the election nears, their ads are filled with images of ISIL terrorists, Ebola viruses, Secret Service breaches, and "porous" borders through which knife-wielding Muslim extremists are surely infiltrating every corner of our ...

On Thursday In a session with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) whether America was at war in Iraq and Syria. How Does This End?

Sep 18 2014 5:26pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

America is about to start yet ANOTHER war to stop terrorism. But we've been invading, bombing, cruise-missiling, and droning countries for decades, and terrorism hasn't gone away. Congress and the president need to stop and think -- how does this end? The simple answer is that it doesn't. President Bush's so-called War on Terror seems likely to continue to the end of President Obama's term and beyond. ...

An Unbearable and Choking Hell: The Loss of Our Freedoms in the Wake of 9/11

Sep 16 2014 8:29am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Ironically, just a short week after the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we find ourselves commemorating the 227th anniversary of the ratification of our Constitution. Yet while there is much to mourn about the loss of our freedoms in the years since 9/11, there has been little to celebrate. As I make clear in my book A Government of Wolves: The Emerging American Police State, the Constitution has been steadily chipped away at, undermined, eroded, whittled down, and generally dis ...
