US reiterates call for Russia to hand over Snowden

Jul 12 2013, 10:34pm CDT | by

Washington, July 13 (IANS) The US Friday reiterated its call for Russia to hand over whistleblower Edward Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

Washington, July 13 — The US Friday reiterated its call for Russia to hand over whistleblower Edward Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

Snowden was charged by Washington with espionage and theft of government property following his disclosure of massive secret phone and internet surveillance programmes of the US National Security Agency.

"Our position on Mr. Snowden and the felony charges against him and our belief that he ought to be returned to the United States to face those felony charges is as it was, and we have communicated it to a variety of countries, including Russia," Xinhua quoted White House spokesman Jay Carney as saying at a press briefing.

"We continue to discuss with Russia our strongly held view that there is absolute legal justification for him to be expelled, for him to be returned to the United States to face the charges that have been brought against him for the unauthorised leaking of classified information," Carney added.

Earlier in the day, Snowden, who has been marooned in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival there June 23, met a group of Russian and foreign human rights activists, lawyers and parliamentarians.

Several participants in the closed-door talks confirmed that Snowden was seeking asylum in Russia.

Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov said the 30-year-old American has accepted the Kremlin's condition that he must stop damaging US interests if he wants to stay in Russia.

The US State Department has revoked his passport, making it difficult for him to travel to other destinations without the document.

Carney Friday criticised Russia for allowing Snowden to meet human rights activists.

"I would simply say that providing a propaganda platform for Mr. Snowden runs counter to the Russian government's previous declarations of Russia's neutrality and that they have no control over his presence in the airport," Carney said.

"It's also incompatible with Russian assurances that they do not want Mr. Snowden to further damage US interests."

He said Washington does not want to see bilateral ties with Moscow harmed by the Snowden case.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki also expressed disappointment with the Snowden meeting, a move she said was facilitated by Russia.

"We obviously don't think this was a proper forum or a proper elevation of him," she said.

"He's not a whistleblower. He's not a human rights activist. He's wanted on a series of serious criminal charges."

"We still believe that Russia has the opportunity to do the right thing and facilitate his return to the United States," she added.

NSA Reform Bill Splits Reformers

Sep 16 2014 3:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

James Clapper became public enemy number one for civil liberties groups in 2013 when Edward Snowden's leaks revealed that he lied to Congress about the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance. One year later, the embattled director of national intelligence is the unlikely bedfellow of the American Civil Liberties Union in backing an NSA reform bill that has divided civil liberties groups. The differing views on the bill reflect a more fundamental disagreement about how ...

Open-Ended Lies

Sep 16 2014 1:56pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Today, the United States moves forward with plans to attack ISIS, alongside the help of unlikely allies. Our government does so aware of the fact that many, if not most Americans disapprove. The American population is fearful of ISIS. Clearly, our government is too. But our fears may stem from different places. And our solutions may vary drastically, too. When there's such a great differen ...

Bradley Manning says 'Let ISIS Succeed.' I say 'Shut That Cell Door!'

Sep 16 2014 11:55am CDT | Source: Big Government

Have they cut it off yet? The penis attached to traitorous transsexual Chelsea Manning, I mean. How else to explain the level of feverish disturbance necessary for the former Private Bradley to pen an op-ed saying we should "let ISIS succeed" in its mission to destroy half the Middle East, murdering, raping and torturing anyone in its way.  There's no doubt that dealing with ISIS, the Islamic State or whatever those barbarian nutcases are calling themselves this week ...

European Court to Investigate Law Allowing Security Services to Snoop on Journalists

Sep 16 2014 10:51am CDT | Source: Big Government

A British law that allows the authorities to snoop on journalists has been slammed as "not fit for purpose", and will be challenged in the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Strasbourg. Lawyers for the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ), who are bringing the case to the court, contend that the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 (Ripa) contravenes Articles 8 and / or 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which allow for the "Right to respe ...

Pew Survey: GOP Becoming Less Libertarian on Foreign Policy

Sep 12 2014 3:09pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Republicans may be moving away from a more libertarian foreign policy approach after the Islamic State's public beheadings of two American journalists. A recent Pew Research poll led the Los Angeles Times to note that the GOP's "libertarian tide on foreign policy, which waxed strongly over the last four years, has begun to recede in the face of growing public fears about Islamic militancy in the Mideast." According to the Pew survey, "fewer conservati ...
