US reiterates call for Russia to hand over Snowden

Jul 12 2013, 10:34pm CDT | by

Washington, July 13 (IANS) The US Friday reiterated its call for Russia to hand over whistleblower Edward Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

Washington, July 13 — The US Friday reiterated its call for Russia to hand over whistleblower Edward Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

Snowden was charged by Washington with espionage and theft of government property following his disclosure of massive secret phone and internet surveillance programmes of the US National Security Agency.

"Our position on Mr. Snowden and the felony charges against him and our belief that he ought to be returned to the United States to face those felony charges is as it was, and we have communicated it to a variety of countries, including Russia," Xinhua quoted White House spokesman Jay Carney as saying at a press briefing.

"We continue to discuss with Russia our strongly held view that there is absolute legal justification for him to be expelled, for him to be returned to the United States to face the charges that have been brought against him for the unauthorised leaking of classified information," Carney added.

Earlier in the day, Snowden, who has been marooned in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival there June 23, met a group of Russian and foreign human rights activists, lawyers and parliamentarians.

Several participants in the closed-door talks confirmed that Snowden was seeking asylum in Russia.

Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov said the 30-year-old American has accepted the Kremlin's condition that he must stop damaging US interests if he wants to stay in Russia.

The US State Department has revoked his passport, making it difficult for him to travel to other destinations without the document.

Carney Friday criticised Russia for allowing Snowden to meet human rights activists.

"I would simply say that providing a propaganda platform for Mr. Snowden runs counter to the Russian government's previous declarations of Russia's neutrality and that they have no control over his presence in the airport," Carney said.

"It's also incompatible with Russian assurances that they do not want Mr. Snowden to further damage US interests."

He said Washington does not want to see bilateral ties with Moscow harmed by the Snowden case.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki also expressed disappointment with the Snowden meeting, a move she said was facilitated by Russia.

"We obviously don't think this was a proper forum or a proper elevation of him," she said.

"He's not a whistleblower. He's not a human rights activist. He's wanted on a series of serious criminal charges."

"We still believe that Russia has the opportunity to do the right thing and facilitate his return to the United States," she added.

How Obama Dragged Democrats Down

Nov 3 2014 1:10pm CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

Washington Post: “Obama’s journey from triumphant, validated Democratic hero to a political millstone weighing on his party’s chances is a tale of a second-term president quickly and repeatedly sidetracked by a series of crises — some self-inflicted — and the widely held perception that the White House has not managed them well.” “Obama’s list of second-term leadership crises is a formidable one: the botched r ...

Brazil to avoid NSA spying with cable to Europe

Nov 3 2014 10:18am CST | Source: WND

NEW YORK – In an attempt to avoid NSA spying, Brazil is planning to lay 3,500 miles of fiber-optic cable under the Atlantic Ocean to bypass the U.S. and create a direct Internet connection to Europe. The estimated $185 million project, built without the help of U.S. companies, will stretch cable from Fortaleza, Brazil, to Portugal, Bloomberg News reported. One year ago, Brazilian President Dilma Roussef ...

Right, left combo to spar with NSA in court

Nov 2 2014 7:12pm CST | Source: WND

WASHINGTON – Tuesday could be a turning point for the country in more ways in one. Of course, it will be election day, when voters will determine whether the GOP will take control of the Senate and perhaps increase its majority in the House of Representatives. But it will also be the day a federal appeals court in Washington hears a potentially landmark case seeking to curb the government’s ability to secretl ...

Citizenfour and the Need for Judicial Engagement in Protecting Our Privacy

Oct 30 2014 2:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There is a remarkable moment in the new Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour that shows why we need judges to take their duty to uphold the Constitution seriously. Citizenfour includes a clip of a 2011 hearing before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, focusing on a number of suits involving dragnet communication surveillance by the NSA. During the hearing, U.S. Department of Justice attorney H. Thomas ...

Pulitzer Prize Winning Reporter: Media Has Given Obama Administration a Pass

Oct 30 2014 12:46pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A Pulitzer prize winning reporter, formerly with the Washington Post, says the major media has mostly given the Obama administration a pass. In a story published yesterday at the Daily Beast, 2006 Pulitzer winning reporter Susan Schmidt agrees that this administration seems to get less scrutiny than previous ones. “With some exceptions, people don’t seem to be digging as hard as they have in other administrations," Schmidt tells the Daily Beast's Lloyd Grove. She ...

Multiple reports appear to confirm that the FBI has closed in on a second NSA leaker who is suspected of having fed information to journalists Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill, as well as Edward Snowden. The FBI reportedly raided his home this week, seeking more evidence of his cooperation with the media. While both the Justice Department and the FBI have declined to comment, Yahoo News' Michael Isikoff reported that a man in north ...

Citizenfour: The Spy Who Was Never Out in the Cold

Oct 29 2014 5:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Officers of the CIA's clandestine service are often warned: don't fall in love with your agents. This cautionary advice is meant to be interpreted literally and figuratively. In Laura Poitras' compelling, controversial, and ultimately contradictory new documentary Citizenfour, the filmmaker seems to have fallen in love with her "agent" -- in this case the movie's hero, or villain, depending upon how you look at it -- ...
