Obama discusses Snowden's status with Putin

Jul 13 2013, 4:28am CDT | by

Washington, July 13 (IANS) US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

Washington, July 13 — US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

In their phone conversation, the two leaders "noted the importance of US-Russian bilateral relations and discussed a range of security and bilateral issues, including the status of Edward Snowden and cooperation on counterterrorism in the lead-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics", the White House said in a terse statement, reported Xinhua.

Snowden, who has been marooned in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival there June 23, disclosed his intention to seek asylum in Russia through his meeting with a group of Russian and foreign human rights activists, lawyers and parliamentarians earlier in the day.

Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov told reporters that the 30-year-old American has agreed to stop damaging US interests, a precondition set by Putin days earlier for Snowden to stay in Russia.

White House spokesman Jay Carney Friday reiterated Washington's call for Russia to hand over Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

"We continue to discuss with Russia our strongly held view that there is absolute legal justification for him to be expelled, for him to be returned to the United States to face the charges that have been brought against him for the unauthorized leaking of classified information," he said at a regular press briefing.

Snowden was charged by Washington with espionage and theft of government property following his disclosure in early June of massive secret phone and Internet surveillance programs of the US National Security Agency.

The US State Department has revoked his passport, making it difficult for him to travel on to other destinations without travel documents.

Fmr CIA Chief Morell: Very Worried About Terrorist Crossing Wide-Open US-Canada Border

Oct 23 2014 11:22am CDT | Source: Big Government

Thursday on "CBS This Morning,"  former CIA deputy director Mike Morell said he is more worried about ISIS easily crossing the wide-open border the United States shares with Canada. Morell said, "I'm much more concerned about the Canada border, Charlie, than I am the Mexican border because it's much easier to come across that border. To stop somebody who's been across the border requires that you know about them. The Canadians know about them and tell us and th ...

UK Enacts Draconian Anti-Social Behavioural Laws

Oct 23 2014 7:33am CDT | Source: Big Government

This week seemingly, like Banquo’s Ghost in Macbeth, a new law has appeared to haunt us and disappeared at the final curtain, unnoticed. This week the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 (ABCP) came into force. It is to give additional powers to the police, local authorities and some in the private sector to deal with problem people and situations. The background is that the European Union and UK political par ...

'Citizenfour' Review: An Incredible Documentary About Edward Snowden

Oct 22 2014 1:38pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Laura Poitras and Ruby Rich and discuss time exploding through the frame (h/t @twendywendy) I went to the bathroom once during the screening of Citizenfour. It took about a half hour before I felt comfortable leaving to miss what was onscreen, and when I walked back I noticed the room was 10º warmer than outside and filled with the smell of sweat. We were having a human experience. Citizenfour, a documentary about Edward Snowden's first few days ...

Oct 20 2014 7:36am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A TomDispatch Interview With Laura Poitras Cross-posted with TomDispatch.com Here’s a Ripley’s Believe It or Not! stat from our new age of national security. How many Americans have security clearances? The answer: 5.1 million, a figure that reflects the explosive growth of the national security state in the post-9/11 era. Imagine the kind of system needed just to vet that many people for access to our secret world (to the tune of billions of dollars). We’re t ...

Edward Snowden's Girlfriend Lives With Him In Moscow, Film Reveals

Oct 10 2014 8:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Among the many revelations in the new documentary on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is that contrary to what the U.S. government would like the public to believe about those who reveal government secrets, his life in exile is pretty good. Snowden, currently living in Moscow, was joined there in June by his girlfriend Lindsay Mills, The Intercept reports. 'Citizenfour', the new film by Laura Poitras that premiered ...

CITIZENFOUR Trailer Released Ahead Of Laura Poitras' Edward Snowden Documentary

Oct 10 2014 12:55pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

When NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden reached out to Laura Poitras in January 2013, the documentary filmmaker knew just what to do: make a documentary. She had recently won a MacArthur genius grant in 2012 and was already several years into making a film about surveillance in the post-9/11 era when Snowden reached out to her using the name "Citizen Four." When she and Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong in June 2013, she brought her camera with her. The re ...
