Obama discusses Snowden's status with Putin

Jul 13 2013, 4:28am CDT | by

Washington, July 13 (IANS) US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

Washington, July 13 — US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

In their phone conversation, the two leaders "noted the importance of US-Russian bilateral relations and discussed a range of security and bilateral issues, including the status of Edward Snowden and cooperation on counterterrorism in the lead-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics", the White House said in a terse statement, reported Xinhua.

Snowden, who has been marooned in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival there June 23, disclosed his intention to seek asylum in Russia through his meeting with a group of Russian and foreign human rights activists, lawyers and parliamentarians earlier in the day.

Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov told reporters that the 30-year-old American has agreed to stop damaging US interests, a precondition set by Putin days earlier for Snowden to stay in Russia.

White House spokesman Jay Carney Friday reiterated Washington's call for Russia to hand over Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

"We continue to discuss with Russia our strongly held view that there is absolute legal justification for him to be expelled, for him to be returned to the United States to face the charges that have been brought against him for the unauthorized leaking of classified information," he said at a regular press briefing.

Snowden was charged by Washington with espionage and theft of government property following his disclosure in early June of massive secret phone and Internet surveillance programs of the US National Security Agency.

The US State Department has revoked his passport, making it difficult for him to travel on to other destinations without travel documents.

The Country Has Big Trouble

Aug 1 2014 8:51am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The two guys at the top of national security (the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the direct of the CIA) have both been caught lying to the American people and to the US Senate -- they have no right to lie. These lies are not to protect the American people. It is to protect themselves. DNI James Clapper lied to the Senate. According to the Washington Post: "And last year, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper lied under oath to Congress wh ...

The Cost of Surveillance

Jul 30 2014 7:20am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

American foreign policy has long been an exercise of divided labor. For more than fifty years, we have parceled out responsibility for guiding America's path in the world among the Departments of State and Defense, the CIA, the NSA, and other smaller agencies. This arrangement has always presented challenges, but has come to a head with the latest wave of embarrassing revelations regarding our nation's espionage activities in Europe. Recently, in a s ...

Bob Schieffer Has Some Very...Strong Opinions About Gaza

Jul 29 2014 10:59am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sometimes it seems as though there are two versions of CBS's Bob Schieffer. One is the avuncular, low-key host of "Face the Nation" who rarely makes waves. And the other is the sharply opinionated pundit who makes dramatic comments about subjects like Edward Snowden and Syria. That second character was in evidence on Sunday, when Schieffer offered this take on the ongoing violence in Gaza. In the Middle East, the Palestinian people find themselves in the grip of a ...

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - A new Senate proposal to curb the government's bulk collection of Americans' telephone records and increase transparency about the program has White House backing and may get more traction with critics who have dismissed other bills as too weak. NSA Losing Interest in Return of Edward Snowden

Jul 28 2014 8:57am CDT | Source: Big Government

New reports say that the National Security Administration (NSA) is beginning to lose interest in making any deals for the return Edward Snowden to the United States. According to The Hill, NSA Deputy Director Rick Ledgett pointed out at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado that the hundreds of thousands of pages of U.S. intelligence stolen by Edward Snowden are starting to age and become irrelevant. Mass Surveillance Is Corroding American Democracy, Human Rights Report Concludes

Jul 28 2014 8:29am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

9/11 Commission Report A Decade Later: Threats Have Evolved, U.S. Hasn't

Jul 21 2014 11:01pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- The authors of the seminal 9/11 Commission report have produced a new study, a decade after the first, painting an often alarming picture of the country’s vulnerability to another terrorist attack. The report, released Tuesday, praises some federal actions for making the country ”better equipped to prevent and respond to terrorist attacks than in 2001.” The commission, led by Chairman Tom Kean and Vice Chairman Lee Hamilton, points to the federali ...
