Obama discusses Snowden's status with Putin

Jul 13 2013, 4:28am CDT | by

Washington, July 13 (IANS) US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

Washington, July 13 — US President Barack Obama discussed the status of Edward Snowden with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin Friday, hours after the former US spy agency contractor made clear his intention to seek political asylum in Russia.

In their phone conversation, the two leaders "noted the importance of US-Russian bilateral relations and discussed a range of security and bilateral issues, including the status of Edward Snowden and cooperation on counterterrorism in the lead-up to the Sochi Winter Olympics", the White House said in a terse statement, reported Xinhua.

Snowden, who has been marooned in the transit zone of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport since his arrival there June 23, disclosed his intention to seek asylum in Russia through his meeting with a group of Russian and foreign human rights activists, lawyers and parliamentarians earlier in the day.

Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov told reporters that the 30-year-old American has agreed to stop damaging US interests, a precondition set by Putin days earlier for Snowden to stay in Russia.

White House spokesman Jay Carney Friday reiterated Washington's call for Russia to hand over Snowden to face espionage charges back at home.

"We continue to discuss with Russia our strongly held view that there is absolute legal justification for him to be expelled, for him to be returned to the United States to face the charges that have been brought against him for the unauthorized leaking of classified information," he said at a regular press briefing.

Snowden was charged by Washington with espionage and theft of government property following his disclosure in early June of massive secret phone and Internet surveillance programs of the US National Security Agency.

The US State Department has revoked his passport, making it difficult for him to travel on to other destinations without travel documents.

Surveillance and the Creative Mind

Aug 26 2014 12:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In a world where many aspects of our daily lives are written or recorded and transmitted digitally, our raw thoughts and casual observations are increasingly open to scrutiny and vulnerable to interception. Our behavior is frequently documented, whether it is by government agencies, corporate entities, news organizations, or fellow citizens. This means that every iteration of an evolving idea, off-hand comment, and emotional outburst could be recorded. Given how often we ...

The Biggest Single Trigger of Jihadism Has Been our Adherence to ‘Multiculturalism’

Aug 24 2014 4:17am CDT | Source: Big Government

The sadistic beheading of the American journalist James Foley by an ISIL killer apparently from Britain, just a few days ago, is the first such killing of an American by a jihadist with a British passport.  But it is the second ritual beheading carried out by British Islamists (the head of a British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, was hacked from his body by two of them in Woolwich, London last year in full public view). Jihadists from Brita ...

ISIS a Jewish Plot? Propaganda and Islamic Jihad

Aug 22 2014 8:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

It took her more than nine years of working in the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, but Yasmina Haifi finally uncovered the secret truth about the Islamic State: It isn't Islamic at all. Actually, it's a Jewish plot. Yes, really: that terrorist group formerly known as ISIS, responsible for acts of genocide in Iraq, for the beheading of American journalist James Foley, and for the murder of countless women and children i ...

Legal teams gang up on NSA over spy programs

Aug 21 2014 10:09am CDT | Source: WND

A challenge to the National Security Agency’s efforts to spy on Americans has gotten the support of some legal heavyweights in the battle over civil rights across the United States – the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union. Attorney Larry Klayman, of FreedomWatchUSA and a commentary author for WND, obtained a stunning ruling at the trial court level that the programs likely are unconstitutional. The c ...

Did a U.S. defense contractor help create the next generation of spyware weapons?

Aug 16 2014 8:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

The Washington Post relates a fascinating little cloak-and-dagger story that ends with a heck of a punchline: a U.S. defense contractor was apparently working with the dirtbags who create spyware and virus programs to develop new tools for spying on people, potentially both foreign and domestic. CloudShield Technologies, a California defense contractor, dispatched a senior engineer to Munich in the early fall of 2009. His instructions were unusually opaque. As he boarded the flight, the engi ...
