Egyptian Brotherhood not to take part in politics

Jul 14 2013, 6:18am CDT | by

Cairo, July 14 (IANS) The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, will not take part in Egyptian political process after the military ousted its president, a party advisor said.

Cairo, July 14 — The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, will not take part in Egyptian political process after the military ousted its president, a party advisor said.

The party rejects a transitional roadmap announced by the army after what it calls "a coup" that overthrew Mohamed Morsi, FJP's media advisor Ahmed Sobei told Xinhua.

"The Brotherhood won't recognize the transitional government, the constitutional declaration or any other procedure resulted from the coup," Sobei said.

On July 3, Morsi was ousted by the military after mass protests demanded his stepping down for his poor performance in his first year in office.

A transitional roadmap was then announced, supported by politicians, religious leaders and representatives of the youth.

The roadmap suspended the constitution, and assigned head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adli Mansour, to temporarily run the country until a new president is elected.

Interim President Mansour appointed ex-finance minister Hazem al-Beblawi as prime minister to form a caretaker government. Beblawi said the Brotherhood will be part of the political process and that they will be offered some portfolios.

However, Sobei said the FJP would "only consider initiatives to bring things to a right path," stressing its rejection to a political process brought about by a coup.

He added the supporters of the party would continue their sit-ins across the country until the return of the "legitimate president".

Commenting on the closure of the Brotherhood's headquarters in Cairo after weapons were found there, Sobei called it a "smear campaign" against the group and its party.

Regarding clashes between the armed forces and Morsi's supporters outside the Republican Guards headquarters in Cairo, Sobei said the political struggle did not to leave any space for Morsi's backers to express their opinions in a peaceful way.

The clashes outside the Republican Guards headquarters Monday left at least 53 people dead and nearly 500 injured.

While the FJP called the incident a "human massacre," the army said the soldiers were only reacting to live ammunition used by the protesters.

The killings promoted the FJP to call for "an uprising by the great people of Egypt against those trying to steal their revolution with tanks".

The party urged the international community to reject the "coup's legitimacy" in order to avoid another Syrian crisis in the Arab world.

However, Sobei stressed the party did not call for an "uprising against the army" but "against the military coup".

"We appreciate the army and its individuals as part of us, but there is a difference between the army and the leaders who staged the coup," he said.

Hamas using GPS-guided mortars from Russia

Aug 27 2014 7:31pm CDT | Source: WND

TEL AVIV – In the week leading up to Tuesday’s cease-fire announcement, Hamas deployed an alarming new weapon: Russian-manufactured mortars with accurate GPS capabilities. Senior Egyptian security officials say Hamas purchased the precision mortars from rebels who looted Muammar Gadhafi’s reserves after the Libyan strongman was toppled by a U.S.-NATO campaign in 2011. The rebels also reportedly acquired thousands of shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, or MANPADS, said to b ...

Monkey Cage: Why Egypt’s military orchestrated a massacre

Aug 22 2014 12:41pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

The Rabaa massacre of Aug. 14, 2013, was Egypt’s Tiananmen Square. Egyptian security forces killed at least 817 people on a single day at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square alone, and more than 1,000 when including the number of casualties across Egypt. It was the biggest mass killing of civilians in modern Egyptian history. The butchery did not take place under the cover of darkness, or in a remote corner of the country, but in broad daylight in Cairo. I was one of a number ...

Senior Fatah Source: Qatar Pushed Hamas to Break Ceasefire

Aug 20 2014 9:18am CDT | Source: Big Government

Why did the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas suddenly break down on Tuesday, even before its expiration? Why would Hamas, in the middle of negotiations and without pretense of provocation, fire rocket barrages against Israel? According to Israel National News, "A senior member of Palestnian [sic] Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction said Wednesday Hamas's choice to forego the Egyptian truce proposal a ...

The Anatomy of an Unfair Trial

Aug 18 2014 4:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sentencing a political opponent to death after a show trial is no different to taking him out on the street and shooting him. In fact, it is worse because using the court system as a tool of state repression makes a mockery of the rule of law. Egypt's constitution guarantees the right to be presumed innocent. And yet in a recent case, an Egyptian judge -- after a "trial" lasting 100 minutes -- sentenced 529 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death. Egypt ...

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

Aug 8 2014 10:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”   In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's dr ...
