US diplomat praises Egyptian army for achieving people's will

Jul 15 2013, 9:18pm CDT | by

Cairo, July 16 (IANS) Visiting US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns has praised the Egyptian army for responding to the will of the people, state-run al-Ahram Online reported.

Cairo, July 16 — Visiting US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns has praised the Egyptian army for responding to the will of the people, state-run al-Ahram Online reported.

Burns said this during a meeting with Egyptian Defence Minister Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi Monday, Xinhua said.

Burns said the US administration was keen to ensure a peaceful democratic transition of power with a clear roadmap in the form of elections.

On July 3, Islamist president Mohamed Morsi was deposed by the armed forces after massive nationwide protests called for his removal.

During the meeting, attended by a number of senior Egyptian military commanders and US ambassador to Egypt Anne Patterson, Sisi affirmed that the army's role was a "national" rather than a "political" one.

He said the poor performance of Morsi led the army to support the protesters.

Burns also met interim president Adli Mansour and discussed with him issues of mutual interest as well as means to further boost bilateral relations.

However, whether Washington views Morsi's overthrow as a coup, a perception that would lead to a halt of US aid, was not clear, Xinhua said.

In a reaction to Morsi's ouster, US President Barack Obama said he was "deeply concerned" by the military's move. He later ordered the defense department to review US foreign assistance programme to Egypt, which is about $1.5 billion in aid every year.

Obama did not openly label the military procedures as "a coup", but he called on Egypt's army to transfer power to a civilian government as soon as possible, urging it to avoid arbitrary arrests of Morsi or his supporters.

In a statement, the US also called on the Egyptian military and interim leaders to release Morsi, who is reportedly under house arrest.

Hamas using GPS-guided mortars from Russia

Aug 27 2014 7:31pm CDT | Source: WND

TEL AVIV – In the week leading up to Tuesday’s cease-fire announcement, Hamas deployed an alarming new weapon: Russian-manufactured mortars with accurate GPS capabilities. Senior Egyptian security officials say Hamas purchased the precision mortars from rebels who looted Muammar Gadhafi’s reserves after the Libyan strongman was toppled by a U.S.-NATO campaign in 2011. The rebels also reportedly acquired thousands of shoulder-launched surface-to-a ...

Monkey Cage: Why Egypt’s military orchestrated a massacre

Aug 22 2014 12:41pm CDT | Source: Post Politics: - The Washington Post

The Rabaa massacre of Aug. 14, 2013, was Egypt’s Tiananmen Square. Egyptian security forces killed at least 817 people on a single day at Rabaa al-Adawiya Square alone, and more than 1,000 when including the number of casualties across Egypt. It was the biggest mass killing of civilians in modern Egyptian history. The butchery did not take place under the cover of darkness, or in a remote corner of the country, but in broad daylight in Cairo. I was one of a n ...

Senior Fatah Source: Qatar Pushed Hamas to Break Ceasefire

Aug 20 2014 9:18am CDT | Source: Big Government

Why did the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas suddenly break down on Tuesday, even before its expiration? Why would Hamas, in the middle of negotiations and without pretense of provocation, fire rocket barrages against Israel? According to Israel National News, "A senior member of Palestnian [sic] Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah faction said Wednesday Hamas's choice to forego the Egyptian truce proposal and return to its rocket war on Israel was due t ...

The Anatomy of an Unfair Trial

Aug 18 2014 4:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Sentencing a political opponent to death after a show trial is no different to taking him out on the street and shooting him. In fact, it is worse because using the court system as a tool of state repression makes a mockery of the rule of law. Egypt's constitution guarantees the right to be presumed innocent. And yet in a recent case, an Egyptian judge -- after a "trial" lasting 100 minutes -- sentenced 529 Musl ...

The Obama Doctrine: Pretend to Give a Damn–Until You Don't Have To

Aug 8 2014 10:13pm CDT | Source: Big Government

For years, commentators have attempted to peg down just what the Obama Doctrine is. His allies have labeled the Obama Doctrine a form of realism about the limits of American power. His critics have labeled the Obama Doctrine “leading from behind.”   In 2009, President Obama came up with his own definition of an Obama Doctrine: “we're only one nation... the problems that we confront, whether it's drug cartels, climate change, terrori ...
