Canadian PM overhauls cabinet

Jul 16 2013, 2:08am CDT | by

Ottawa, July 16 (IANS) Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has brought in "younger members of parliament ready for new opportunities" while keeping "steady hands that will continue to deliver strong leadership in key portfolios" in one of the largest Cabinet shuffles he has made since taking office in 2006.

Ottawa, July 16 — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has brought in "younger members of parliament ready for new opportunities" while keeping "steady hands that will continue to deliver strong leadership in key portfolios" in one of the largest Cabinet shuffles he has made since taking office in 2006.

Eight new faces are part of the 39-member Cabinet. They include Chris Alexander, Canada's former ambassador to Afghanistan, who becomes the country's new minister of citizenship and immigration and replaces Jason Kenney, who now becomes minister of the newly named department of employment and social development that replaces human resource and skills development department, reported Xinhua.

Half of the new appointments are women and include Shelly Glover, a 46-year-old former police officer, who will serve as minister of Canadian heritage and official languages, replacing James Moore, who is now Canada's industry minister.

Harper now has 12 women in his Cabinet, two more than he had before Monday's cabinet overhaul.

Several senior Cabinet ministers remain, although some swapped jobs.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, a former prosecutor, is now Canada's justice minister and Attorney General, a position held by Rob Nicholson, who now takes over the national defence portfolio.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, International Trade Minister Ed Fast and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver all kept their jobs.

A few Cabinet members were dropped, including Environment Minister Peter Kent, who publicly acknowledged that possibility before Monday's swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, the official residence of Canada's Governor General and representative of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's head of state.

Replacing Kent on the environment file is Leona Aglukkaq, who was the first Inuk (an indigenous person from the Arctic) in Canadian history to be appointed to a federal Cabinet when she was named minister of health in 2008.

Rona Ambrose, previously the minister of public works and government services and the youngest woman in Canadian history to be appointed a Cabinet minister (as environment minister in 2006, at the age of 36), replaces Aglukkaq in the health portfolio.

Monday's cabinet announcements also marked the first time a Canadian prime minister tweeted the appointments before the official ceremony.

As Obama drags heels, Canada turns to China

Aug 27 2014 11:36am CDT | Source: WND

NEW YORK – With the increasing importance of oil sales to the Canadian economy and the Obama administration’s continued blocking of plans to build the Keystone Pipeline, Canada is moving ahead with the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project, a pipeline to expedite the shipping of land-locked oil reserves in Alberta to China. Calgary-based energy giant Enbridge received the approval of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government June 17 to proceed with the construction of the $7.3 ...

Border crisis linked to North American Union

Aug 13 2014 7:36pm CDT | Source: WND

The author of a book that is credited with revealing to the public a clandestine campaign for a “North American Union” suggests the current border crisis – in which tens or even hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens are simply moving into America – is a steppingstone to the original NAU plan. “We stopped the [Security and Prosperity Partnership] simply by exposing the plan to create a North American Union,” said Jerome Corsi, author of “The Late Great U. ...

Hamas Versus Israel: Moral Clarity Awards

Aug 6 2014 11:17pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In an earlier piece, I offered ten candidates for the Moral Fog Award. These were countries, institutions, and leaders who couldn't, or wouldn't, make a clear moral distinction between Israel, a democratic nation seeking nothing more than quiet on its border with Hamas-ruled Gaza, and Hamas, a terrorist regime determined to fulfill its charter calling for Israel's destruction. Before moving on to my top ten candidates for the Moral Clarity Awar ...

White House's 'Totally Indefensible' Attack on Israel

Jul 31 2014 3:32pm CDT | Source: Big Government

White House spokesman Josh Earnest called Israel's attack earlier this week on a UN school that was sheltering Palestinian children "totally unacceptable and totally indefensible." He did not mention that the Israeli military has said that it was being attacked by Hamas terrorists in the vicinity, nor did he note that Hamas has used the UN to store weapons, to launch rockets at Israeli civilians, or to attack Israeli troops--as even the UN ha ...

Joe Scarborough's 'Asinine' Attack on Israel

Jul 31 2014 9:16am CDT | Source: Big Government

Joe Scarborough, of MSNBC's Morning Joe, claimed Thursday that he is a "100% supporter of Israel," but that Israel's "continued killing of women and children, in a way that appears to be indiscriminate, is asinine."  The truth, self-evident in Scarborough's rant, is that he is no friend of Israel--and that he knows nothing about the Hamas terror group, either, which he described as merely "corrupt" and not actually ...
