Canadian PM overhauls cabinet

Jul 16 2013, 2:08am CDT | by

Ottawa, July 16 (IANS) Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has brought in "younger members of parliament ready for new opportunities" while keeping "steady hands that will continue to deliver strong leadership in key portfolios" in one of the largest Cabinet shuffles he has made since taking office in 2006.

Ottawa, July 16 — Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has brought in "younger members of parliament ready for new opportunities" while keeping "steady hands that will continue to deliver strong leadership in key portfolios" in one of the largest Cabinet shuffles he has made since taking office in 2006.

Eight new faces are part of the 39-member Cabinet. They include Chris Alexander, Canada's former ambassador to Afghanistan, who becomes the country's new minister of citizenship and immigration and replaces Jason Kenney, who now becomes minister of the newly named department of employment and social development that replaces human resource and skills development department, reported Xinhua.

Half of the new appointments are women and include Shelly Glover, a 46-year-old former police officer, who will serve as minister of Canadian heritage and official languages, replacing James Moore, who is now Canada's industry minister.

Harper now has 12 women in his Cabinet, two more than he had before Monday's cabinet overhaul.

Several senior Cabinet ministers remain, although some swapped jobs.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, a former prosecutor, is now Canada's justice minister and Attorney General, a position held by Rob Nicholson, who now takes over the national defence portfolio.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, International Trade Minister Ed Fast and Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver all kept their jobs.

A few Cabinet members were dropped, including Environment Minister Peter Kent, who publicly acknowledged that possibility before Monday's swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall, the official residence of Canada's Governor General and representative of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, Canada's head of state.

Replacing Kent on the environment file is Leona Aglukkaq, who was the first Inuk (an indigenous person from the Arctic) in Canadian history to be appointed to a federal Cabinet when she was named minister of health in 2008.

Rona Ambrose, previously the minister of public works and government services and the youngest woman in Canadian history to be appointed a Cabinet minister (as environment minister in 2006, at the age of 36), replaces Aglukkaq in the health portfolio.

Monday's cabinet announcements also marked the first time a Canadian prime minister tweeted the appointments before the official ceremony.

Oct 26 2014 3:21pm CDT | Source: WND

Four terror attacks in as many days: two in Canada one after the other, an ax attack in New York City and vehicular jihad in Jerusalem – and the jihadists are just getting warmed up. Of course, in all of these jihad news stories, getting the facts from the enemedia is difficult, and at times impossible. They self-enforce the Shariah. And so they approach the news story with bleach and a scrub brush, working hard to come up with somethi ...

On his Thursday radio program, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh offered his theory on what drove alleged Ottawa shooter Michael Zehaf-Bibeau to act the way he did a day earlier that led to his death and the death of a Canadian soldier at a war memorial. According to Limbaugh, the weak and mentally unstable in western democracies are victims of socialist propaganda, which often times depicts their home countries negatively and that is the root cause of these actions. Partial tra ...

Ottawa Attack Is Canada's Fault Says Leading Muslim Journalist

Oct 23 2014 7:38am CDT | Source: Big Government

Afghan-Canadian journalist Nelofer Pazira has told the Independent that yesterday's attack in Ottawa happened because the country's Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper “pushed Canada into joining the US-led war in the Middle East”. She claimed that the country had “become divided” when the government put a group of Muslims on a watch list, and suggested the running over of a soldier earlier this week was in retaliation. Paziri said: “Harper’s pro-American pol ...

Why Canada Is Under Attack By Terrorists

Oct 22 2014 3:50pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Most people probably reacted in shock to learn that Canada has now been hit twice by terror attacks against soldiers in three days. Many Americans probably think of it as our sleepy socialist neighbor to the north. But Canada is a key ally in the war against terrorism in general, and ISIS in particular. And today's attack is a harbinger of things to come in America. The notion of a war against Canada can seem a little far-fetched. I show the film "Canadian Baco ...
