Russia-US ties more important than Snowden: Putin

Jul 17 2013, 6:40am CDT | by

Moscow, July 17 (IANS) The relationship between Russia and the US is more important than any intelligence scandal, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

Moscow, July 17 — The relationship between Russia and the US is more important than any intelligence scandal, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

"International relations, in my opinion, are more important than the special services' hassles," Putin told reporters in the Far Eastern city of Chita, reports Xinhua.

He added that the Russian authorities have no intention to follow former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's actions.

"We have no plans to go into details. We warned Snowden that any of his actions damaging Russian-US relations are unacceptable to us," Putin said.

The US intelligence whistleblower filed an official request for temporary asylum in Russia Tuesday, saying he had no plans to go for Latin America after receiving asylum in Russia.

Putin previously said that Snowden arrived in Russian territories without invitation as a transit passenger to other countries, and he will "leave Russia when opportunity emerges".

The president had noted that Snowden was blocked from further travels after Washington revoked the 29-year-old whistleblower's passport.

Talking about the costs of "human rights activities," Putin said that when these activities are carried out under the aegis of the US and with its support, it is a comfortable business.

But "if somebody intends to start criticizing the US, of course this is a more complicated business".

Meanwhile, Putin reiterated that Snowden was not planning to stay in Russia for long, hinting the American was not welcomed in the country.

"He is a young man, as a matter of fact, we don't quite understand how he made his decision and how he is going to shape his life in future, but this is his future and his choice," Putin said.

The Russian Federal Migration Service confirmed Tuesday it has received an application for asylum from Snowden.

How Obama Dragged Democrats Down

Nov 3 2014 1:10pm CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

Washington Post: “Obama’s journey from triumphant, validated Democratic hero to a political millstone weighing on his party’s chances is a tale of a second-term president quickly and repeatedly sidetracked by a series of crises — some self-inflicted — and the widely held perception that the White House has not managed them well.” “Obama’s list of second-term leadership crises is a formidable one: the botched rollout of HealthCare.gov, long wa ...

Brazil to avoid NSA spying with cable to Europe

Nov 3 2014 10:18am CST | Source: WND

NEW YORK – In an attempt to avoid NSA spying, Brazil is planning to lay 3,500 miles of fiber-optic cable under the Atlantic Ocean to bypass the U.S. and create a direct Internet connection to Europe. The estimated $185 million project, built without the help of U.S. companies, will stretch cable from Fortaleza, Brazil, to Portugal, Bloomberg News reported. One year ago, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff delivered a scathing speech to the United Nations ...

Right, left combo to spar with NSA in court

Nov 2 2014 7:12pm CST | Source: WND

WASHINGTON – Tuesday could be a turning point for the country in more ways in one. Of course, it will be election day, when voters will determine whether the GOP will take control of the Senate and perhaps increase its majority in the House of Representatives. But it will also be the day a federal appeals court in Washington hears a potentially landmark case seeking to curb the government’s ability to secretly gather information ...

Citizenfour and the Need for Judicial Engagement in Protecting Our Privacy

Oct 30 2014 2:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

There is a remarkable moment in the new Edward Snowden documentary Citizenfour that shows why we need judges to take their duty to uphold the Constitution seriously. Citizenfour includes a clip of a 2011 hearing before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, focusing on a number of suits involving dragnet communication surveillance by the NSA. During the hearing, U.S. Department of Justice attorney H. Thomas Byron III said that the court should dismiss the cases. Byron argued tha ...

Pulitzer Prize Winning Reporter: Media Has Given Obama Administration a Pass

Oct 30 2014 12:46pm CDT | Source: Big Government

A Pulitzer prize winning reporter, formerly with the Washington Post, says the major media has mostly given the Obama administration a pass. In a story published yesterday at the Daily Beast, 2006 Pulitzer winning reporter Susan Schmidt agrees that this administration seems to get less scrutiny than previous ones. “With some exceptions, people don’t seem to be digging as hard as they have in other administrations," Schmidt tells the Daily Beast ...

Citizenfour: The Spy Who Was Never Out in the Cold

Oct 29 2014 5:19pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Officers of the CIA's clandestine service are often warned: don't fall in love with your agents. This cautionary advice is meant to be interpreted literally and figuratively. In Laura Poitras' compelling, controversial, and ultimately contradictory new documentary Citizenfour, the filmmaker seems to have fallen in love with her "agent" -- in this case the movie's hero, ...
