Russia-US ties more important than Snowden: Putin

Jul 17 2013, 6:40am CDT | by

Moscow, July 17 (IANS) The relationship between Russia and the US is more important than any intelligence scandal, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

Moscow, July 17 — The relationship between Russia and the US is more important than any intelligence scandal, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.

"International relations, in my opinion, are more important than the special services' hassles," Putin told reporters in the Far Eastern city of Chita, reports Xinhua.

He added that the Russian authorities have no intention to follow former spy agency contractor Edward Snowden's actions.

"We have no plans to go into details. We warned Snowden that any of his actions damaging Russian-US relations are unacceptable to us," Putin said.

The US intelligence whistleblower filed an official request for temporary asylum in Russia Tuesday, saying he had no plans to go for Latin America after receiving asylum in Russia.

Putin previously said that Snowden arrived in Russian territories without invitation as a transit passenger to other countries, and he will "leave Russia when opportunity emerges".

The president had noted that Snowden was blocked from further travels after Washington revoked the 29-year-old whistleblower's passport.

Talking about the costs of "human rights activities," Putin said that when these activities are carried out under the aegis of the US and with its support, it is a comfortable business.

But "if somebody intends to start criticizing the US, of course this is a more complicated business".

Meanwhile, Putin reiterated that Snowden was not planning to stay in Russia for long, hinting the American was not welcomed in the country.

"He is a young man, as a matter of fact, we don't quite understand how he made his decision and how he is going to shape his life in future, but this is his future and his choice," Putin said.

The Russian Federal Migration Service confirmed Tuesday it has received an application for asylum from Snowden.

Sep 2 2014 1:14pm CDT | Source: ThinkProgress

CREDIT: Shutterstock Industrial espionage, punitive tariffs and trade wars — as the New York Times reported on Monday, they’re just the latest in the ongoing dispute between solar manufacturers in the U.S. and China. SolarWorld Americas — the largest solar panel manufacturer in the U.S. — first brought its case to the Commerce Department in 2011, arguing that subsidies provided by the Chinese government were allowing manufacturers there to sell solar panels at unfairly low costs, threa ...

A few months ago a high-powered contingent from the electronic surveillance world gathered for a semi-public talk fest about "The National Security Agency At The Crossroads." The crossroads, as it emerged, is formed by the intersection of accelerating technological innovation, the offensive/defense dynamic, the proliferation of interested parties, and the intrusion of Fourth Amendment considerations. Her ...

Surveillance and the Creative Mind

Aug 26 2014 12:58pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In a world where many aspects of our daily lives are written or recorded and transmitted digitally, our raw thoughts and casual observations are increasingly open to scrutiny and vulnerable to interception. Our behavior is frequently documented, whether it is by government agencies, corporate entities, news organizations, or fellow citizens. This means that every iteration of an evolving idea, off-hand comment, and emotional outburst could be recorded. Given how often we all misinterpret ...

The Biggest Single Trigger of Jihadism Has Been our Adherence to ‘Multiculturalism’

Aug 24 2014 4:17am CDT | Source: Big Government

The sadistic beheading of the American journalist James Foley by an ISIL killer apparently from Britain, just a few days ago, is the first such killing of an American by a jihadist with a British passport.  But it is the second ritual beheading carried out by British Islamists (the head of a British soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, was hacked from his body by two of them in Woolwich, London last year in full public view). Jihadists from Britain are at the for ...

ISIS a Jewish Plot? Propaganda and Islamic Jihad

Aug 22 2014 8:56am CDT | Source: Big Government

It took her more than nine years of working in the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, but Yasmina Haifi finally uncovered the secret truth about the Islamic State: It isn't Islamic at all. Actually, it's a Jewish plot. Yes, really: that terrorist group formerly known as ISIS, responsible for acts of genocide in Iraq, for the beheading of American journalist James Foley, and for the murder of countless women and children in their war to establish a new Islamic Calipha ...

Legal teams gang up on NSA over spy programs

Aug 21 2014 10:09am CDT | Source: WND

A challenge to the National Security Agency’s efforts to spy on Americans has gotten the support of some legal heavyweights in the battle over civil rights across the United States – the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union. Attorney Larry Klayman, of FreedomWatchUSA and a commentary author for WND, obtained a stunning ruling at the trial court level that the programs likely are unconstitutional. The case has been advanced to the U.S. Court ...
