Pakistan, Britain discuss security, economic ties

Jul 18 2013, 8:48am CDT | by

Islamabad, July 18 (IANS) Visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague Thursday met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed ways to revitalise Pakistan's economy, deal with the energy crisis, create a pro-investment climate and improve the security situation.

Islamabad, July 18 — Visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague Thursday met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed ways to revitalise Pakistan's economy, deal with the energy crisis, create a pro-investment climate and improve the security situation.

The two leaders discussed how Britain can contribute in these areas and benefit from investment and business opportunities in Pakistan, Xinhua cited the prime minister's office as saying in a statement.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to support all initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region as well as in Afghanistan.

Hague arrived in Islamabad Wednesday for a two-day visit, just a few weeks after British Prime Minister David Cameron visited the country.

The two leaders discussed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction at the direction and trajectory of the relationship, the statement said.

They noted that the visit last month of Cameron sent the right message for an enduring partnership between the two countries.

Hague expressed full support for all initiatives and reaffirmed Britain's desire to contribute to Pakistan's development and prosperity.

On Wednesday, Hague met Pakistan's Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, and said Britain has plans to work in partnership with Pakistan to provide expertise and support in developing counter-terrorism strategy.

Hague acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistani people in the war against terrorism.

On Afghanistan, Hague said a good relationship with Pakistan's neighbour was the key to security.

He said both Britain and Pakistan agree on the importance of peace, stability and security in Afghanistan and support an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

Jul 25 2014 8:30am CDT | Source: Big Government

This week in the European Parliament, the Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) met to discuss the EU's budget for the next year. What at first looked like a dull meeting of MEPs, became a more exciting after a Labour MEP insulted a large portion of the EU's citizens. UKIP MEP Louise Bours for the North West of England, had no doubt alienated herself from many of her colleagues by saying she was "bewildered and staggered that have we learned absolutely ...

The EU's Tactics Over Ukraine Are Fatally Flawed

Jul 25 2014 7:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

Whatever your position on the Ukraine crisis, it has exposed the utter impotence of the EU and the fatal flaw behind the concept of the European super-state. The sanctions that EU leaders have threatened to impose - when they can get around to it - are feeble and look set to impact on Britain more heavily than any of our EU "partners". Given ample warning, Putin’s cronies have already been able to mov ...

Britain's Pro-EU Business Secretary, Vince Cable, is under fire for ordering the rewriting of a Whitehall report that is critical of benefits tourism and European migration, according to the Daily Mail. The report, which was published today, was due to come out earlier this year but publication was delayed by senior Liberal Democrats who feared it was too anti-EU. Commons Speaker John Bercow Strengthens His Position Despite Disastrous 12 Months

Jul 22 2014 2:45am CDT | Source: Big Government

John Bercow has had a rather difficult year. Twelve months ago, the Speaker of the House of Commons suffered public humiliation at the hands of Conservative MPs, who passed to the press physical evidence of so-called "Bollocked By Bercow" badges they were secretly wearing to subvert him. The badges were designed by backbencher Simon Burns, who famously muttered that Bercow was a "stupid, sanctimonious dwarf", only to apologise to dwarves for the offensive comparison. The ...
