Pakistan, Britain discuss security, economic ties

Jul 18 2013, 8:48am CDT | by

Islamabad, July 18 (IANS) Visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague Thursday met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed ways to revitalise Pakistan's economy, deal with the energy crisis, create a pro-investment climate and improve the security situation.

Islamabad, July 18 — Visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague Thursday met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and discussed ways to revitalise Pakistan's economy, deal with the energy crisis, create a pro-investment climate and improve the security situation.

The two leaders discussed how Britain can contribute in these areas and benefit from investment and business opportunities in Pakistan, Xinhua cited the prime minister's office as saying in a statement.

Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to support all initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the region as well as in Afghanistan.

Hague arrived in Islamabad Wednesday for a two-day visit, just a few weeks after British Prime Minister David Cameron visited the country.

The two leaders discussed the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction at the direction and trajectory of the relationship, the statement said.

They noted that the visit last month of Cameron sent the right message for an enduring partnership between the two countries.

Hague expressed full support for all initiatives and reaffirmed Britain's desire to contribute to Pakistan's development and prosperity.

On Wednesday, Hague met Pakistan's Advisor on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, and said Britain has plans to work in partnership with Pakistan to provide expertise and support in developing counter-terrorism strategy.

Hague acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistani people in the war against terrorism.

On Afghanistan, Hague said a good relationship with Pakistan's neighbour was the key to security.

He said both Britain and Pakistan agree on the importance of peace, stability and security in Afghanistan and support an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process.

Lib Dems Have 'Killed Off' EU Referendum Bill

Oct 29 2014 12:35pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The latest attempt to enshrine in law an EU referendum has been defeated after Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs conspired against the European Union (Referendum) Bill. The Bill was proposed by backbench MP Bob Neill and backed by David Cameron as part of his pledge to offer the British people a say - once he has tried to negotiate new terms in the European Council.  The BBC reported that Mr Neill said the Lib Dems had done "everything they could ...

Benedict Cumberbatch Thinks Feminism Is Sexy - He's Wrong

Oct 29 2014 11:12am CDT | Source: Big Government

I love (loved) Benedict Cumberbatch. I wouldn't go so far as saying I'm a 'Cumberbitch', but I am certainly a big fan. His Sherlock is fabulous. And I have actually taken the time to re-watch his appearance in 'Parade's End', which is a big time commitment, let me tell you. But today our relationship has been strained to breaking point by this nauseating image of the lovely Benedict wearing a 'this is what a feminist looks like' ...

Calais Mayor: Britain Soft Touch on Immigration

Oct 29 2014 4:04am CDT | Source: Big Government

No-nonsense Calais Mayor Natacha Bouchart told MPs yesterday that Britain was a “soft touch” for asylum seekers. “These people are ready and prepared to die to come to England” she told the Home Affairs Committee, adding that the fences placed around the border control which Britain proudly sent to help the beleaguered City “make everyone laugh”. For months now Ms Bouchart and other local politicians have been demanding that Britain do more to help with the inc ...

[Ticker] EU referendum bill killed off in UK parliament

Oct 28 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: EUobserver.com

Plans to enshrine an EU referendum in law have been abandoned after the Liberal Democrats, the junior partner in David Cameron's coalition, refused to back the bill. The draft law, sponsored by a back-bench Conservative MP, would have guaranteed an 'In/out' referendum in 2017 regardless of next year's elec ...

Compare and contrast the following two statements from Westminster politicians over the last few weeks: "I answer first, foremost and last to you, you are my boss, I will not let you down." "I’m very clear about who the boss is, about who I answer to, and it’s the British people." The first was Douglas Carswell’s victory speech following his Clacton by-election win. The second was ...

Steyn: Obama ‘Owes Us Some Candor’ On Radical Islam

Oct 27 2014 10:39pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Mark Steyn, author of “The Undocumented Mark Steyn,” declared that “the president owes us some candor” on Islamic terrorism during an interview on Monday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel. Steyn said that the refusal to call acts like the beheading in Oklahoma City and the Ft. Hood shooting terrorism “tells our enemies that we don't have the will even to acknowledge the enemy that we're trying to fight.” Steyn added, t ...

Merkel Will Block Cameron's Plan to Limit EU Migrants

Oct 26 2014 8:26am CDT | Source: Big Government

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has dealt another blow to David Cameron saying she will not ‘tamper’ with EU freedom of movement. The Prime Minister is relying on being able to make changes to half a billion people having the right to live, work and settle in the UK as he tries to stem the flow of support from the Conservative Party to UKIP. The news, coming only days after it was revealed Mrs Merkel told Cameron to pay the extra bill of £ ...

When Owen Paterson was sacked from his position as Environment Secretary back in June, he blamed the ‘Green Blob’ – a conglomeration of “powerful, self-serving” environmental lobbyists. Now an investigation by the Mail on Sunday has given shape to that blob, identifying the foundations that give well over half a billion pounds a year to environmental lobby groups – who are targeting the UK as the country leading the way in green ener ...

£1.7 Billion EU Bill Shows We Need Radical Reform

Oct 25 2014 4:31am CDT | Source: Big Government

The EU’s announcement that it expects an additional £1.7 billion from the UK is both reasonable on a pan-European level, but unreasonable in the context of the UK. Crucially, it acts as a poignant reminder as to why the UK must be firm in renegotiating its position within Europe and why Britain’s contribution to the EU budget must be part of such a renegotiation. In the context of the Eurozone, fiscal transfers between members of the same currency are an acceptable norm ...
