World salutes Mandela on 95th birthday

Jul 18 2013, 9:30am CDT | by

Johannesburg, July 18 (IANS) World leaders Thursday sent their "warmest wishes and prayers" to Nelson Mandela, as the former South African president and anti-apartheid icon turned 95.

Johannesburg, July 18 — World leaders Thursday sent their "warmest wishes and prayers" to Nelson Mandela, as the former South African president and anti-apartheid icon turned 95.

While US President Barack Obama said people will forever draw strength and inspiration from Mandela's "extraordinary example of moral courage, kindness and humility", his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin said Mandela's name "is inseparably linked with an entire epoch of Africa's modern history", Xinhua reported.

Mandela, who served as president from 1994 to 1999, has been in hospital since June 8 for a recurring lung infection. South African President Jacob Zuma Thursday said Mandela's doctors have confirmed that his health is steadily improving.

"Our family was deeply moved by our visit to Madiba's former cell on Robben Island during our recent trip to South Africa, and we will forever draw strength and inspiration from his extraordinary example of moral courage, kindness and humility," Obama said in a statement.

Obama had hoped to see Mandela when he visited the country in June but failed due to Mandela's hospitalisation.

The day was declared by the UN as Nelson Mandela International Day.

"On Nelson Mandela International Day, people everywhere have the opportunity to honour Madiba through individual and collective acts of service," Obama said in his statement.

"Through our own lives, by heeding his example, we can honour the man who showed his own people -- and the world -- the path to justice, equality and freedom," he added.

Putin said Mandela was an integral part of Africa's modern history.

"Your name is inseparably linked with an entire epoch of Africa's modern history that heralded the building of the new and democratic Republic of South Africa," Putin said in his message on Mandela's 95th birthday.

Mandela has a "well-deserved authority" both in South Africa and abroad thanks to his decades-long political and public activities, Putin said in the message published on the Kremlin website.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius paid tribute to Mandela for his dedication to "bring the freedom and dignity back to the people of the South Africa".

Lasro Simbolon, director of African affairs at Indonesia's foreign affairs ministry,, said Indonesia has very strong links with South African democracy and the anti-apartheid campaigner.

"Indonesia's staunch support to the anti-apartheid movement was highly respected by Nelson Mandela that made him visit Indonesia in 1990, soon after he was released from his 27-year imprisonment. His first visit to Indonesia was in 1990. Since then he was quite frequent in visiting Indonesia," he said.

During his frequent visits to Indonesia, Mandela fell in love with the country's traditional cloth of Batik. Since then, he was often seen wearing batik shirt in many international events, the official said.

Praising Mandela's tenacity in fighting his illness that has forced him to stay in hospital, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China has always been concerned about Mandela's health.

"We sincerely hope he can conquer disease and recover at an early date," the spokeswoman said.

Mandela is the founder of the new South Africa and a world-renowned statesman, Hua said.

Hope, Voting and Creating the World You Want to Live In

This article originally appeared at TheNation.com We live in a time fraught with bad news. From the toll of violence and poverty to the escalating march of climate change, every week brings temptations to despair. Hope may actually be more beleaguered in the wake of a president who won the office in part by branding himself with it. Many have concluded that political participation has become a futile game. For myself, I deal with potential despair by finding wa ...

Putin: The Psyche of the Modern Dictator

Sep 5 2014 10:46am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Dictators have always existed. They have taken many forms. We can go back to Rome, to the rise of Julius Caesar; an ancient democratic state that became psychologically convinced it was safer, and easier, to trust the power of a single person over the power of the people collectively. We can look to more modern examples, like Stalin, who took over a state that was already a dictatorship, and used his unwieldy power to oppress and ...

Gaza as Seen by a Progressive Zionist

Aug 28 2014 4:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a progressive (or "liberal" as I grew up calling myself), I've been troubled by the divide I've seen in the progressive community over the Israeli-Hamas conflict. While there are many good progressives on the national scene who, as I do, support Israel enthusiastically, I have also seen the unmistakable strain of anti-Israeli sentiment on the part of progressives I know, read, or interact with o ...

Ferguson protesters invoke Che – oh, the irony!

Aug 26 2014 6:40pm CDT | Source: WND

By Humberto Fontova When a comedian’s “brilliant” witticism bombs he’ll often complain to the “dumb” audience that: “The irony is lost on you people!” In this spirit of “lost irony” I give you (pro) Michael-Brown protesters wearing Che Guevara T-Shirts at Ferguson demonstrations. Why “lost irony,” some readers might ask? “Don’t Shoot!” is the Ferguson demonstrator slogan/chant, right? Well, upon his very first (and very brief) experience with something properly de ...

Former South African President Calls for Boycott of Israel

Aug 12 2014 8:32am CDT | Source: Big Government

South Africa's ex-President Thabo Mbeki has called for a boycott of Israeli goods to show solidarity with Palestinians. The public should mobilise against Israel so that it "does pay a price for the position that it is taking", Mr Mbeki said in the capital, Pretoria. About 2,000 people, mostly Palestinians, have died in the conflict in Gaza since July. Most South Africans have historically supported the Palestinians. BBC South Africa analyst Farouk Chothia says they include the ...

EXCLUSIVE: Labour Press Officer Speaks out About Defection to UKIP

Aug 6 2014 5:35am CDT | Source: Big Government

A little while ago, I took a giant step forward and joined UKIP: the ‘people’s army’. Was I right? There are now around forty thousand of us members. But my own journey was a little different. For a small part of my professional career, a decade ago, I’d served as a Labour Party Press Officer working closely on a daily routine with Cabinet ministers and ambitious special advisers, including Ed Balls and Ed and David Miliband. I led the ...
