New York, July 19 (IANS) India wished former South African president Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health on his 95th birthday Thursday.

New York, July 19 — India wished former South African president Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health on his 95th birthday Thursday.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a message on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, which is celebrated July 18, said: "Mahatma Gandhi had honed his skills as a young lawyer in Nelson Mandela's homeland."

Bound countries are bound by history and "more than a billion Indian hearts rejoice and take pride in the life and mission of Nelson Mandela, which stand for ideals that are enduring and universal in their appeal and relevance".

"The outpouring of love and the countless prayers that we have seen in recent days for Nelson Mandela only prove that there is something very deep and abiding in the human spirit that binds us across borders. Today, we stand with our African brothers and sisters in wishing Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health."

The message was read out at the UN by Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji, permanent representative of India to the UN, during a special event of the UN General Assembly. India was the first country invited to speak at the special event.

On the occasion, India complimented all member states of the UN for celebrating the values that Nelson Mandela has dedicated his life to.

"These values of peace, pluralism, justice, equality and dignity are also embodied in the United Nations Charter. In proclaiming 18 July as the Nelson Mandela International Day, the United Nations paid tribute to a great citizen of the world."

UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon addressed the event and the key note address was delivered by former US president Bill Clinton.

The Youngest Victims: Combating the Social Isolation of Ebola Orphans

Oct 21 2014 11:22am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In 2002, I had the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela. We were speaking about the phenomenon of social isolation -- a longtime area of focus for me -- and I said, "I can imagine you know a lot about isolation." But to my surprise, Madiba responded, "No." He told me that even on Robben Island, imprisoned for so many years, "We were all brothers working together with a common purpose. I was never alone. ...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told a Las Vegas crowd Monday night that more needs to be done to ensure young people can achieve their dreams and free students from onerous college debt "that can feel like an anchor tied to their feet dragging them down." "I think our young people deserve a fair shot," she told about 900 people gathered in a Bellagio resort ballroom for the annual ...

# 7 Dispirited Liberal America

Oct 13 2014 1:04pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Summary: In Liberal America these days, one encounters a good deal of hopelessness about the future of our country. Why the hopelessness? The difficult circumstances certainly play a part. But they are not answer enough. Hopelessness is also a sign of disconnection from the realm of the spirit. In that realm, there is no sense of "impossible." And this disconnection from the spirit is also at the root of Liberal America's weakness. This points to a cure for our hopeles ...

12 Ways Parents Can Protect Their Kids From Too Many Pills

Oct 2 2014 1:28pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

We are turning our kids into pill poppers. The rate of ADHD has tripled in just 20 years -- it is now diagnosed in 11 percent of all children aged 4-17 and is medicated in 6 percent of them. And the percentages get really crazy for teenage boys -- 20 percent are diagnosed and 10 percent are medicated. There is also compelling evidence that most of this "ADHD" comes from careless diagnosis. How else to explain that a child' ...

Fox News Pundit Winds Up On The Terrorist Watch List

Sep 23 2014 3:30pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The Department Of Homeland Security is known for being somewhat overzealous with its terrorist watch list—Nelson Mandela was infamously on the list as late as 2008, for instance. Hundreds of thousands of people are routinely placed on the list, often for very minimal reasons. On Tuesday, the world got another glimpse into the baffling choices the federal government sometimes makes when conservative writer and Fox News pundit Stephen Hayes revealed that he had been placed on the list. Just in ...

Hope, Voting and Creating the World You Want to Live In

Sep 16 2014 11:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

This article originally appeared at TheNation.com We live in a time fraught with bad news. From the toll of violence and poverty to the escalating march of climate change, every week brings temptations to despair. Hope may actually be more beleaguered in the wake of a president who won the office in part by branding himself with it. Many have concluded that political participation has become a futile game. For myself, I deal with potential despair by finding ways to act. And remember ...

Putin: The Psyche of the Modern Dictator

Sep 5 2014 10:46am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Dictators have always existed. They have taken many forms. We can go back to Rome, to the rise of Julius Caesar; an ancient democratic state that became psychologically convinced it was safer, and easier, to trust the power of a single person over the power of the people collectively. We can look to more modern examples, like Stalin, who took over a state that was already a dictatorship, and used his unwieldy power to oppre ...
