New York, July 19 (IANS) India wished former South African president Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health on his 95th birthday Thursday.

New York, July 19 — India wished former South African president Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health on his 95th birthday Thursday.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a message on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, which is celebrated July 18, said: "Mahatma Gandhi had honed his skills as a young lawyer in Nelson Mandela's homeland."

Bound countries are bound by history and "more than a billion Indian hearts rejoice and take pride in the life and mission of Nelson Mandela, which stand for ideals that are enduring and universal in their appeal and relevance".

"The outpouring of love and the countless prayers that we have seen in recent days for Nelson Mandela only prove that there is something very deep and abiding in the human spirit that binds us across borders. Today, we stand with our African brothers and sisters in wishing Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery and good health."

The message was read out at the UN by Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji, permanent representative of India to the UN, during a special event of the UN General Assembly. India was the first country invited to speak at the special event.

On the occasion, India complimented all member states of the UN for celebrating the values that Nelson Mandela has dedicated his life to.

"These values of peace, pluralism, justice, equality and dignity are also embodied in the United Nations Charter. In proclaiming 18 July as the Nelson Mandela International Day, the United Nations paid tribute to a great citizen of the world."

UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon addressed the event and the key note address was delivered by former US president Bill Clinton.

Gaza as Seen by a Progressive Zionist

Aug 28 2014 4:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a progressive (or "liberal" as I grew up calling myself), I've been troubled by the divide I've seen in the progressive community over the Israeli-Hamas conflict. While there are many good progressives on the national scene who, as I do, support Israel enthusiastically, I have also seen the unmistakable strain of anti-Israeli sentiment on the part of progressives I know, read, or interact with on s ...

Ferguson protesters invoke Che – oh, the irony!

Aug 26 2014 6:40pm CDT | Source: WND

By Humberto Fontova When a comedian’s “brilliant” witticism bombs he’ll often complain to the “dumb” audience that: “The irony is lost on you people!” In this spirit of “lost irony” I give you (pro) Michael-Brown protesters wearing Che Guevara T-Shirts at Ferguson demonstrations. Why “lost irony,” some readers might ask? “Don’t Shoot!” is the Ferguson demonstrator slogan/chant, right? Well, upon his very first (and very brief) experience with something properly describable a ...

Former South African President Calls for Boycott of Israel

Aug 12 2014 8:32am CDT | Source: Big Government

South Africa's ex-President Thabo Mbeki has called for a boycott of Israeli goods to show solidarity with Palestinians. The public should mobilise against Israel so that it "does pay a price for the position that it is taking", Mr Mbeki said in the capital, Pretoria. About 2,000 people, mostly Palestinians, have died in the conflict in Gaza since July. Most South Africans have historicall ...

Obama, African Leaders Confront Continent's Crises

Aug 6 2014 3:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama called on African nations Wednesday to forcefully tackle health crises, security challenges and government corruption that could stymie the continent's economic progress, as he concluded an unprecedented summit. The summit, aimed in part at cultivating an Obama legacy on a continent where his family ties run deep, also marked a rare return to Washington f ...

EXCLUSIVE: Labour Press Officer Speaks out About Defection to UKIP

Aug 6 2014 5:35am CDT | Source: Big Government

A little while ago, I took a giant step forward and joined UKIP: the ‘people’s army’. Was I right? There are now around forty thousand of us members. But my own journey was a little different. For a small part of my professional career, a decade ago, I’d served as a Labour Party Press Officer working closely on a daily routine with Cabinet ministers and ambitious special advisers, including Ed Balls and Ed ...

American Media Biased Coverage of the Crisis in Gaza

Aug 1 2014 4:29pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

As a Palestinian living in the United States, I must say that the reporting of Fox News and CNN has no connection to the reality that Palestinians know only too well. Their coverage is unfair and fails to convey the whole truth of what is transpiring there. I have intensively followed the news since the abduction of the three Israeli teens on June 12, and it has become abundantly clear to me, and to many others, that the mainstream media in America are biased toward Israel. CNN ...

The Gaza War and Anti-Semitism

Jul 29 2014 9:42am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I keep reading outraged comments from Jewish organizations and media condemning those (like me) who believe and say that the Gaza war is resulting in a spike in anti-Semitism. (They agree that incidents of anti-Semitism are increasing but reject the idea that it has anything to do with Israeli actions.) Their argument makes no sense. It goes like this. Anti-Semitism is not caused by anything. It is innate, a poison that lives in the hearts and minds of ev ...

The Lamp Beside the Golden Door: Protecting Refugee Children at our Borders

Jul 27 2014 7:46pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Nelson Mandela once said, "We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear." That phrase from the Noble Prize-winning global beacon should be our only mandate as we address the incendiary situation along the border as desperate droves of children fleeing violence in Central America for the refuge of the United States are met with an often impenetrable fence of antipathy.  ...
