Obama nominates Indian-American as pointperson for South Asia

Jul 19 2013, 10:24am CDT | by

Washington, July 19 (IANS) On the eve of Vice President Joe Biden's visit to India, President Barack Obama has nominated Nisha Desai Biswal, an accomplished Indian-American administrator, as America's new point person for South Asia.

Washington, July 19 — On the eve of Vice President Joe Biden's visit to India, President Barack Obama has nominated Nisha Desai Biswal, an accomplished Indian-American administrator, as America's new point person for South Asia.

When confirmed by the Senate, Desai will become the first person of Indian or even South Asian origin to head the South Asia bureau of the State Department, which oversees US foreign policy and relations with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Bhutan.

Designated as the assistant secretary of state for south and central Asian affairs, she will succeed Robert Blake, a former deputy chief of mission in New Delhi, who is expected to be nominated shortly as the new US ambassador to Indonesia.

In nominating Biswal and seven other individuals to the departments of state, energy, and defence, Obama said: "It gives me great confidence that such dedicated and capable individuals have agreed to join this administration to serve the American people. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come."

Biswal is currently assistant administrator for Asia at the US Agency for International Development, which is headed by Rajiv Shah, the highest ranking Indian American in the Obama administration, a position she has held since September 2010.

Desai Biswal, who is a graduate of the University of Virginia, began her professional career in Washington DC with the American Red Cross in the mid-90s before she joined USAID in her first stint.

As a Hill staffer with the US House of Representatives International Relations Committee from 1999 to 2002, she worked extensively with diplomats from the region before doing another stint with the NGO InterAction.

From 2005 to 2010, she was the Majority Clerk for the State Department and Foreign Operations Subcommittee on the Committee on Appropriations in the US, a crucial position for allocation of American foreign aid.

Although there have been several other Indian-Americans at the assistant secretary level, namely Bobby Jindal, Richard Varma, Karan Bhatia, Suresh Kumar among them, this is the first time an Indian-American would be heading the South Asia bureau.

Dr. Ben Carson says the "likelihood is strong" that he will run for president in 2016, and the attendees of the Values Voters summit this week seem to think he would make a great vice president. On the fundraising front, the National Draft Ben Carson Committee is raising millions on the mere prospect of Carson running. Clearly, there is plenty of interest in the former Johns ...

Sarah Palin has fun with her own gaffe

Sep 26 2014 10:33pm CDT | Source: Big Government

It was fun watching the liberals who saddled America with Barack Obama - known for dismissing a deadly terrorist enemy as al-Qaeda's junior varsity, blurting out that he has no strategy for defeating them, and blowing over a billion dollars on the worst website launch in history - rip into Sarah Palin for getting the address of the White House wrong in a speech.  She said "1400 Pennsylvania Avenue" instead of 1600.  Meanwhile, the current Vice President has to ...

Story of Bedford Women’s Club’s December tradition

Sep 25 2014 10:34am CDT | Source: The Cabinet Press

When the days grow dark, it is important to celebrate the reassuring qualities we find in people. Such qualities have the power of lights in the darkness. Stephanie Johnson, past president of the Bedford Women’s Club (1997-98), had a vision: plant a tree and make it a “tradition for the community.” In 1996, Johnson was second vice president of the Bedford Women’s Club, with the responsibility of raising funds for charities and scholarships. She wanted to ...
