Biden to press India on more economic reforms

Jul 19 2013, 1:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 19 (IANS) Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

Washington, July 19 — Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

While the US welcomed India's raising of foreign direct investment limits in certain sectors last week, "we look forward to continuing to work together to further increase American investment", a senior administration official said Friday.

Biden's trip "would also afford a chance to point that international firms can play a very constructive role in developing India's retail sector to meet the needs of India's growing population in a way that benefit Indian farmers and consumers as well as American business," he said in a White House teleconference call.

"You can expect that this will be a very important agenda," the official said ahead of Biden's four day trip which starts Monday.

The visit would be the first by a US vice president in 30 years since then incumbent George H.W. Bush came in the eighties.

"We will raise the concerns that we have just as we will advise the Indian government to raise the concerns that they have and its views on how we can facilitate economic opportunity for Indian companies in the US."

Among the key issues the official listed were "India's need to provide automatic protection of intellectual property and the importance of a stable predictable tax regime."

Biden, he said, "will describe how reforms in these areas can help strengthen trade and investment ties and will help further India's incredible growth story".

The vice president's trip, "will be a chance to build upon all of the commercial and economic dialogue that we have going with India right now", the official said, referring to the visits of three Indian ministers here last week and US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to India last month for the India-US strategic dialogue.

Asked about the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal, which has been a limbo over India's nuclear liability laws, the official said, "both of us regard this as a signature achievement and are keen to maximise it".

"We also recognise there are issues associated with it and we need to be engaged on it," he said.

As Biden himself told a Washington think tank Thursday, "we still have a lot of work to do on a wide range of issues".

"There is a lot of work to do," he said listing civil nuclear cooperation, bilateral investment treaty and policies promoting innovation.

"There's a lot of work to do. But we believe doing -- going with an open mind and listening, as well as making our case, we believe it can be done."

Obama: 'This Is Probably The Worst' Situation For Senate Democrats Since Eisenhower

Nov 4 2014 3:39pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says the political landscape for this midterm election tilts against Senate Democrats. He compares the states Democrats are defending to the 1958 Republican losses during the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower. "This is probably the worst possible group of states for Democrats since Dwight Eisenhower," Obama told WNPR radio in Connecticut Tuesday, according to CNN. "There are a lot of states t ...

Senator Chuck Grassley Has A Thing For Dairy Queen And He Wants You To Know About It

Nov 3 2014 4:09pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Senator Chuck Grassley, Republican of Iowa, famously runs his own Twitter account, a rare feat for an 81-year-old, let alone an 81-year-old senator. As it happens, the self-proclaimed "Chief Twitterer of the Senate," occasionally has a few misfires, like the time he tweeted about hitting a deer ("Assume deer dead"). And on Monday, the senator tweeted about one of his favorite places in the whole world -- Dairy Queen -- and left the better part of his followers a ...

Things Conservative Pundits Say About Young Voters

Nov 3 2014 11:50am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Young voters are more likely to skip the midterm elections this year than the general population. That is typically bad news for Democrats: Research from Harvard University shows that even though they lean Democratic overall, a large share of young voters who are likely to turn up say they're interested in voting Republican. But if you track how conservative pundits speak about young voters, you can't h ...

Supreme Court Rejects Appeal Challenging Senate Filibuster

Nov 3 2014 9:17am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal from a public interest group and four members of Congress who challenged the Senate filibuster as unconstitutional. The justices let stand a lower court ruling that said Common Cause and the lawmakers did not have legal standing to pursue the case. The plaintiffs argued that Senate rules requiring at least 60 votes to bring legislation to a vote violates the constitutional principle of majority rule. A federal appeals cour ...

Illinois Governor's Race Pushes Democrats To Dig Deep

Oct 31 2014 8:13am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

CHICAGO (AP) — At first blush, Illinois would seem to be a lock for an incumbent Democratic governor: The population leans left. Democrats control most of state government, and this year's race is likely to turn on the Chicago area, one of the few places President Barack Obama can still bring large crowds to their feet. But Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn is battling to survive against Bruce Rauner, a wealthy businessman Republicans are banking on to exploit th ...

The Second Term Midterm Presidential Curse

Oct 30 2014 11:28am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

If President Obama loses the Senate on November 4, it will not be so much a mar on his presidential legacy as it will be a continuation of a recent two-term presidential tradition. Our last four full two-term presidents, Eisenhower to Bush II, have concluded their final two years in office without the support of either house of Congress. Seemingly, the populous becomes weary of any president regardless of party ...
