Biden to press India on more economic reforms

Jul 19 2013, 1:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 19 (IANS) Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

Washington, July 19 — Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

While the US welcomed India's raising of foreign direct investment limits in certain sectors last week, "we look forward to continuing to work together to further increase American investment", a senior administration official said Friday.

Biden's trip "would also afford a chance to point that international firms can play a very constructive role in developing India's retail sector to meet the needs of India's growing population in a way that benefit Indian farmers and consumers as well as American business," he said in a White House teleconference call.

"You can expect that this will be a very important agenda," the official said ahead of Biden's four day trip which starts Monday.

The visit would be the first by a US vice president in 30 years since then incumbent George H.W. Bush came in the eighties.

"We will raise the concerns that we have just as we will advise the Indian government to raise the concerns that they have and its views on how we can facilitate economic opportunity for Indian companies in the US."

Among the key issues the official listed were "India's need to provide automatic protection of intellectual property and the importance of a stable predictable tax regime."

Biden, he said, "will describe how reforms in these areas can help strengthen trade and investment ties and will help further India's incredible growth story".

The vice president's trip, "will be a chance to build upon all of the commercial and economic dialogue that we have going with India right now", the official said, referring to the visits of three Indian ministers here last week and US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to India last month for the India-US strategic dialogue.

Asked about the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal, which has been a limbo over India's nuclear liability laws, the official said, "both of us regard this as a signature achievement and are keen to maximise it".

"We also recognise there are issues associated with it and we need to be engaged on it," he said.

As Biden himself told a Washington think tank Thursday, "we still have a lot of work to do on a wide range of issues".

"There is a lot of work to do," he said listing civil nuclear cooperation, bilateral investment treaty and policies promoting innovation.

"There's a lot of work to do. But we believe doing -- going with an open mind and listening, as well as making our case, we believe it can be done."

A new poll released by the Associated Press and GfK Public Affairs finds that 55% of Americans disapprove of the way President Obama has handled foreign affairs, with only 37% approving of his handling of the conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas. The poll asked respondents a number of questions about both foreign policy and immigration; on the former affairs, the Obama administration scored exceptionally low. In the Middle ...

Famous atheist slapped for 'disturbing' rape tweets

Jul 30 2014 6:51pm CDT | Source: WND

Richard Dawkins Richard Dawkins, the world’s most famous atheist, has attempted to categorize degrees of rape and even “mild pedophilia” on Twitter, and the left-leaning mainstream media have turned a blind eye. Now former Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin – who made an admittedly awkward description of rape in 2012 when he was defending a baby’s right to life and was subsequently abandoned by his ...

The loophole is Obama

Jul 30 2014 6:39pm CDT | Source: WND

It’s been reported everywhere – the New York Times, the Washington Post, Fox News – that the William Wilberforce Sex Trafficking Act requires that any non-Mexican children who show up on our border be admitted and given a hearing. (New York Times, July 7, 2014: “Immigrant Surge Rooted in Law to Curb Child Trafficking.”) The problem, we’ve been told, is that a loophole in the sex trafficking law mandates these hearings ...

In Fight for Independence, Iraqi Kurds Look to America for Support

Jul 28 2014 2:42pm CDT | Source: Big Government

The Kurdish Peshmerga forces-- a co-ed military considered the most organized military force in Iraq-- have been largely responsible for limiting the advance of the Islamic State in the nation. Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador Governments Must Reassess Their Priorities

Jul 28 2014 7:55am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

For well over a month, Americans have read headlines capturing the humanitarian crisis of approximately 52,000 Guatemalan, Honduran and Salvadoran unaccompanied minors being detained at the U.S.-Mexico border. Yet, judging by the actions of the government officials in countries where these refugees originated -- Central America's Northern Triangle -- one would think there are real issues to be addressed. Just last month, Honduras' President Juan Orla ...

Is What I Saw in Detroit America's Future?

Jul 25 2014 2:22pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In Detroit, it's come down to matters of basic survival: keeping the water turned on, providing basic public services, determining which blocks to raze and which to save. These are decisions no one should have to make. I was in town for Netroots Nation 2014, held last week in the Motor City, and what I saw in Detroit reminded me it doesn't have to be this way. We should be having conversations about bu ...

Women Are Underrepresented In Politics, But It's Not For The Reason You Think

Jul 22 2014 2:44pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- Thirty years ago, Geraldine Ferraro became the first woman named to a major party's presidential ticket when the then-New York congresswoman won the Democratic vice presidential nomination on July 19, 1984. Since then, women have made many strides in the political arena. The current Congress contains a record number of women: 20 serve in the Senate, and 82 serve in the House of Representatives.
