Biden to press India on more economic reforms

Jul 19 2013, 1:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 19 (IANS) Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

Washington, July 19 — Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

While the US welcomed India's raising of foreign direct investment limits in certain sectors last week, "we look forward to continuing to work together to further increase American investment", a senior administration official said Friday.

Biden's trip "would also afford a chance to point that international firms can play a very constructive role in developing India's retail sector to meet the needs of India's growing population in a way that benefit Indian farmers and consumers as well as American business," he said in a White House teleconference call.

"You can expect that this will be a very important agenda," the official said ahead of Biden's four day trip which starts Monday.

The visit would be the first by a US vice president in 30 years since then incumbent George H.W. Bush came in the eighties.

"We will raise the concerns that we have just as we will advise the Indian government to raise the concerns that they have and its views on how we can facilitate economic opportunity for Indian companies in the US."

Among the key issues the official listed were "India's need to provide automatic protection of intellectual property and the importance of a stable predictable tax regime."

Biden, he said, "will describe how reforms in these areas can help strengthen trade and investment ties and will help further India's incredible growth story".

The vice president's trip, "will be a chance to build upon all of the commercial and economic dialogue that we have going with India right now", the official said, referring to the visits of three Indian ministers here last week and US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to India last month for the India-US strategic dialogue.

Asked about the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal, which has been a limbo over India's nuclear liability laws, the official said, "both of us regard this as a signature achievement and are keen to maximise it".

"We also recognise there are issues associated with it and we need to be engaged on it," he said.

As Biden himself told a Washington think tank Thursday, "we still have a lot of work to do on a wide range of issues".

"There is a lot of work to do," he said listing civil nuclear cooperation, bilateral investment treaty and policies promoting innovation.

"There's a lot of work to do. But we believe doing -- going with an open mind and listening, as well as making our case, we believe it can be done."

Aug 18 2014 1:40pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden gave a hearty welcome Monday to the man many Democrats hope will someday replace him. Biden presided over a ceremonial swearing-in for new Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro. He's the former San Antonio mayor whose political profile received a major boost in 2012 when President Barack Obama chose him to speak at the Democratic National Convention. ...

Why Harry Reid and Brian Sandoval Are Fighting Over An Obscure Election

Aug 14 2014 3:07pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Like most lieutenant governors, there's not a lot for the No. 2 executive in Nevada to do most days. So why are Harry Reid and Brian Sandoval so involved in the battle over the office this fall? For both, the outcome in an obscure race could shape their political futures. Sandoval, the state's popular Hispanic governor, is the challenger national Republicans dr ...

How Obama Suddenly Became Pro-Worker

Aug 13 2014 6:32am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- In May 2013, low-wage workers in federal buildings in Washington began walking off the job in a series of one-day strikes. Employed by concessionaires and janitorial contractors at places like the Smithsonian and the Ronald Reagan Building, the workers said their rock-bottom wages weren't enough to survive on. Like the Walmart and fast-food workers also going on strike, they asked for better working conditions and a greater share of the spoils. Calli ...

A Former Obama Aide's Revealing 'Rolling Stone' Article

Aug 9 2014 3:02pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Reid Cherlin used to work for The Obama Administration. After the election of the new President in 2008, he worked in the Press Secretary's Office as one of its spokespeople. He left the gig a couple of years later. In a new piece for Rolling Stone magazine, he recounts his experiences from the inside. It has to be read to be believed. You see, Mr. Cherlin, as he readily admits in the middle of paragraph seven, is an unabashed Obama fan: I'm biased in that I think Obama i ...

Obama's Irrelevant Air Strikes

Aug 9 2014 12:24pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

After months of temporizing analysis, President Barack Obama re-engaged militarily in the fading colonial construct known as "Iraq." That he has done so in limited fashion is to be commended, though the air strikes he has ordered so far are mere pinpricks. History will probably record that the invasion of Iraq sounded the death knell of America's most grandiloquent, boneheaded imperial fantasies. In his Thursday night address to the nation, approved by some progressive ...

More Evidence the Obama Administration Sees a Connection Between Border Crisis and DACA

Aug 8 2014 4:24pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Contrary to denials by many in the media, the Obama administration had repeatedly connected the current crisis of unaccompanied children on the border to the President's executive actions on immigration, in particular Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Two weeks ago, I noted that Vice President Joe Biden, Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs in the National Security Council Ricardo Zuñiga, and U.S. Customs and Border P ...

While U.S. Defends The Kurds With Airstrikes, It's Choking Off Needed Oil Revenue

Aug 8 2014 3:27pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- A leading Democratic voice on foreign affairs called Friday for the White House to drop U.S. opposition to allowing the Kurdistan Regional Government to sell its own oil. On Thursday night, President Barack Obama declared that the United States would defend the Kurds, who are facing an onslaught from the militant forces of the Islamic State. By Friday morning, that promise had turned into airs ...

HUFFPOST HILL - Shock And A&W: U.S. May Bomb Iraq With Food

Aug 7 2014 3:57pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The House has given up on defunding ACORN, perhaps to lay the groundwork for shutting Solyndra down. A former postmaster general is disgusted by Harry Potter-themed stamps, probably because of the fantasy series' reckless portrayal of letter carriers as owls. And John Walsh announced he's dropping out of his Senate race, because if there's one thing we've learned from Rand Paul, Joe Biden, and T ...

Timeline: Border Surge Began a Few Months After Obama's First Executive Action on Immigration

Aug 5 2014 5:50pm CDT | Source: Big Government

President Obama's executive actions on immigration did not begin with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in mid-2012. It began in 2011 with his announcement of "prosecutorial discretion" on deportations. A few months later the border patrol noted the first uptick in unaccompanied children at the border. There has been an ongoing argument in the public sphere over whether or not President Obama's exec ...
