Biden to press India on more economic reforms

Jul 19 2013, 1:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 19 (IANS) Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

Washington, July 19 — Pressing India for more economic reforms, US Vice President Joe Biden will raise a host of issues ranging from further opening up the retail sector to a stable tax regime during his first India trip next week.

While the US welcomed India's raising of foreign direct investment limits in certain sectors last week, "we look forward to continuing to work together to further increase American investment", a senior administration official said Friday.

Biden's trip "would also afford a chance to point that international firms can play a very constructive role in developing India's retail sector to meet the needs of India's growing population in a way that benefit Indian farmers and consumers as well as American business," he said in a White House teleconference call.

"You can expect that this will be a very important agenda," the official said ahead of Biden's four day trip which starts Monday.

The visit would be the first by a US vice president in 30 years since then incumbent George H.W. Bush came in the eighties.

"We will raise the concerns that we have just as we will advise the Indian government to raise the concerns that they have and its views on how we can facilitate economic opportunity for Indian companies in the US."

Among the key issues the official listed were "India's need to provide automatic protection of intellectual property and the importance of a stable predictable tax regime."

Biden, he said, "will describe how reforms in these areas can help strengthen trade and investment ties and will help further India's incredible growth story".

The vice president's trip, "will be a chance to build upon all of the commercial and economic dialogue that we have going with India right now", the official said, referring to the visits of three Indian ministers here last week and US Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to India last month for the India-US strategic dialogue.

Asked about the landmark India-US civil nuclear deal, which has been a limbo over India's nuclear liability laws, the official said, "both of us regard this as a signature achievement and are keen to maximise it".

"We also recognise there are issues associated with it and we need to be engaged on it," he said.

As Biden himself told a Washington think tank Thursday, "we still have a lot of work to do on a wide range of issues".

"There is a lot of work to do," he said listing civil nuclear cooperation, bilateral investment treaty and policies promoting innovation.

"There's a lot of work to do. But we believe doing -- going with an open mind and listening, as well as making our case, we believe it can be done."

GOP Leaders Clamoring for More 'High-Tech Immigration' if Party Wins Senate

Oct 25 2014 9:39am CDT | Source: Big Government

GOP leaders are clamoring behind the scenes to massively increase the number of guest-worker visas for high-tech companies if Republicans control Congress after the midterms. According to The Hill, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) recently said that "there is agreement on reforming the rules governing high-tech visas, known as H-1b visas." Hatch, "the chairman of the GOP's High-Tech Task Force," told an Overstock.com corporate office in Utah that H-1b refor ...

CREDIT: Shutterstock Welcome to TP Ideas‘ weekly roundup of the best conservative writing! Every Friday, we take a look at three pieces by right-leaning writers that constructively articulate core elements of their worldview. The goal isn’t to find conservatives telling us how right liberals are, but rather to pick out writing that helps liberals understand where their ideological foes are coming from. So let’s get started. 1. “The Death Of The Parish” — Da ...

Sarah Palin Blasts Shameless CNN & Carol Costello for Laughing at Female Assault Victim, Not Calling to Apologize

Oct 24 2014 10:50am CDT | Source: Big Government

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin blasted CNN and anchor Carol Costello for apologizing to Politico instead of directly to her family after Costello told her audience to "enjoy" a frantic audio tape of a young woman (Bristol Palin) telling police that an adult man assaulted her.  Costello, herself a domestic abuse victim, found the audio tape hilarious. She apologized but refused to do so on the air or directly to the Palins. CNN, the network that essentially accused Palin of incit ...

Hensarling: GOP-Controlled Congress Should Massively Increase Guest-Worker Permits for Foreigners

Oct 21 2014 11:18pm CDT | Source: Big Government

If Republicans gain control of Congress, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) wants more guest-worker visas for high-tech and low-skilled workers in addition to a piecemeal immigration reform. Hensarling, the House Financial Services Committee Chair whom the pro-amnesty Wall Street Journal touted as the "leading candidate to eventually succeed John Boehner as Speaker," would "like to see immigration reform that allows more H-1B visas for high-tec ...

6 People Who Downplayed The Threat of Ebola

Oct 20 2014 1:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

With the announcement last week that a second nurse had contracted the Ebola virus – and then flown with the Ebola virus already manifesting as a “low-grade” fever – it has become clear that the government is not in control of the situation. Already, the Centers for Disease Control have announced that they will be adopting stricter protocols in the future, which would make perfect sense given that any common sense standard would include travel bans o ...

6 Times Obama Declared Crisis, Then Did Nothing

Oct 20 2014 1:37pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Last week, President Obama finally began taking Ebola seriously – so seriously that he cancelled a campaign trip in order to hold an emergency meeting on Ebola. He then appointed a new Ebola czar, Ron Klain, whose stellar qualifications for handling a possible Ebola outbreak include flacking for Janet Reno, Al Gore, and Joe Biden. Finally, Obama held another Ebola meeting after going golfing. Klain skipped the meeting. It was the second such meeting Klain skipped. ...
