British PM announces crackdown on online porn

Jul 22 2013, 10:01pm CDT | by IANS

London, July 23 (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron has declared war on online pornography, calling for a safer internet for children.

London, July 23 — British Prime Minister David Cameron has declared war on online pornography, calling for a safer internet for children.

Cameron Monday warned that access to online porn was "corroding childhood", and urged internet companies to act to block access to child abuse images, Xinhua reported.

"I want to talk about the internet, the impact it is having on the innocence of our children, how online pornography is corroding childhood and how, in the darkest corners of the internet, there are things going on that are a direct danger to our children, and that must be stamped out," the prime minster said.

He warned internet giants they could face tough new laws if they fail to blacklist key search terms from horrific images by this October.

Cameron unveiled a series of measures to reduce access to pornography with a particular focus on images of child sexual abuse.

They include:

-- Possession of "extreme pornography", which includes scenes of simulated rape, is to be outlawed.

-- The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center (CEOP) is to draw up a blacklist of "abhorrent" internet search terms to identify and prevent paedophiles searching for illegal material.

-- All police forces will work with a single secure database of illegal images of children to help "close the net on paedophiles".

-- Children are to be protected by automatic filtering of adult material.

-- Illegal image searches to be blocked.

Cameron also outlined steps to subject video streamed online in Britain to same restrictions as those sold in shops.

Based on his plan, internet service providers will introduce a "default on" filters that will oblige homeowners to "opt in" to receive sexually graphic materials.

The filters will be automatically enable for new customers setting up broadband accounts or switching providers unless a request is made to disable it.

Aug 20 2014 10:43pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Wednesday on Newsmax TV's "The Steve Malzberg Show," editor of "The Weekly Standard" Bill Kristol called President Barack Obama's response to the beheading of American journalist James Foley by ISIS "pathetic" "childish" and akin to many nations Nazi appeasement in the 1930's. Kristol said, "Its really pathetic, I feel sick really as an Americ ...

Aug 20 2014 11:16am CDT | Source: Big Government

I've never considered Cameron to a particularly strong leader, but at least he has some sense of decorum. Farage: Use 144-Year-Old Law Act to Strip Jihadists of British Citizenship

Aug 20 2014 7:59am CDT | Source: Big Government

UKIP leader Nigel Farage has called on Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron to take a stand on the Islamic State and strip UK nationals who are fighting abroad of their citizenship and cancel passports using the little-known Foreign Enlistment Act of 1870. The move would bring the United Kingdom into line with close ally Australia, whose Prime Minister Tony Abbott has sworn “to do our damndest” to ensure “trained killer… returning Jiha ...

Dear Philip Hammond, What EXACTLY is a 'Moderate Jihadist'?

Aug 20 2014 6:13am CDT | Source: Big Government

What exactly is a "moderate jihadist"? Is it someone who tweets photographs of severed heads but fights shy of getting his hands bloody? Someone who inclines towards enslaving captured women and children rather than burying them alive? One who only executes Yazidis but not Christians? Whatever, we can probably agree that UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond made a serious error when applying that unfortunate phrase on BBC Radio 4's Today programme this morning ...

Islamic State: The Monster Western Intervention Created

Aug 19 2014 2:41pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Before Britain gets involved in another intervention against Sunni insurgents in Iraq, David Cameron should read the Koran. Verse 216, Chapter 2 says: "You may hate a thing which is good for you, and you may love a thing which is bad for you. God knows, while you do not know." Wise words for a British prime minister tempted to delete all those humiliating memories of Basra. The two knee-jerk responses to the sudden and complete collapse of Western "post ...
