British PM announces crackdown on online porn

Jul 22 2013, 10:01pm CDT | by IANS

London, July 23 (IANS) British Prime Minister David Cameron has declared war on online pornography, calling for a safer internet for children.

London, July 23 — British Prime Minister David Cameron has declared war on online pornography, calling for a safer internet for children.

Cameron Monday warned that access to online porn was "corroding childhood", and urged internet companies to act to block access to child abuse images, Xinhua reported.

"I want to talk about the internet, the impact it is having on the innocence of our children, how online pornography is corroding childhood and how, in the darkest corners of the internet, there are things going on that are a direct danger to our children, and that must be stamped out," the prime minster said.

He warned internet giants they could face tough new laws if they fail to blacklist key search terms from horrific images by this October.

Cameron unveiled a series of measures to reduce access to pornography with a particular focus on images of child sexual abuse.

They include:

-- Possession of "extreme pornography", which includes scenes of simulated rape, is to be outlawed.

-- The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center (CEOP) is to draw up a blacklist of "abhorrent" internet search terms to identify and prevent paedophiles searching for illegal material.

-- All police forces will work with a single secure database of illegal images of children to help "close the net on paedophiles".

-- Children are to be protected by automatic filtering of adult material.

-- Illegal image searches to be blocked.

Cameron also outlined steps to subject video streamed online in Britain to same restrictions as those sold in shops.

Based on his plan, internet service providers will introduce a "default on" filters that will oblige homeowners to "opt in" to receive sexually graphic materials.

The filters will be automatically enable for new customers setting up broadband accounts or switching providers unless a request is made to disable it.

None of Our Leaders Have Convinced Us they Deserve to Win the Election

Nov 4 2014 2:59am CST | Source: Big Government

Those wishing to understand British politics ahead of next year’s General Election could do worse than consider the following two statistics. First, according to the current trend of polls, the combined vote share of the main two parties is lower than at any point since the Second World War. In 1951 Labour and the Conservatives between them earned 96.8 percent of public support. A poll from Lord Ashcroft yesterday put their current combined vote share below 60 percent. Put simply, ...

'Swamped' Comments Exposes Labour Hypocrisy on Immigration

Nov 1 2014 8:06am CDT | Source: Big Government

Once again today we see more hypocrisy from The Labour Party. Simon Danczuk has said that we are ‘swamped’ with immigrants. We must remember that it was the Labour Party that opened our borders unconditionally to mass uncontrolled immigration to nearly half a billion people. They failed us. Simon Danczuk is a member of a party that still fully believes in our membership of the European Union, which also includes the fre ...

Report: UK Foreign Aid 'Encouraging Corruption'

Oct 31 2014 4:05am CDT | Source: Big Government

Taxpayers' money is funding corruption in foreign countries, a damning report has revealed. The Independent Commission for Aid Impact (ICAI) says the British aid is actively encouraging corrupt practices, such as bribery. In one scheme, Britain invested millions in helping tackle police corruption in Nigeria, only for locals to say that police were even more likely to accept bribes afterwards. In another, people ended up be ...
