US deploys aircraft carrier USS Truman to Gulf

Jul 23 2013, 4:12am CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 23 (IANS) The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

Washington, July 23 — The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

"The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is ready to deploy," Xinhua quoted Rear Adm. Kevin Sweeney, commander of the carrier strike group, as saying in a statement.

"We've worked very hard over the last several months to maintain our combat readiness following the delay of our deployment in February due to sequestration."

The strike group consists of approximately 6,000 sailors and Marines. Besides the USS Truman, it includes the destroyers USS Bulkeley and USS Mason, and the cruiser USS San Jacinto.

Carrier Air Wing 3 will be embarked onboard the Truman with three strike fighter squadrons, a Marine fighter attack squadron, airborne early warning aircraft, electronic attack aircraft and two helicopter squadrons.

They were scheduled to leave Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia Monday for an eight-to-nine month tour of duty in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas, which means Middle East, Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic.

In addition, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg will deploy from Naval Station Mayport in Florida.

In February, the USS Truman was primed and ready to head the Middle East, but the navy cancelled the plan as automatic budget cuts known as sequestration forced a dramatic reshuffling of priorities.

The newly deployed carrier does not mean the US Navy will go back to fielding two carriers in the Gulf.

Automatic budget cuts will prevent the navy from returning a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region in fiscal 2014, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said last week.

The decision to forgo a second carrier next year came as Greenert reported an increase in piracy in the Gulf of Oman over the last eight months.

Greenert said he has seen no evidence that the reduced carrier presence has altered the activity of the Iranian Navy.

US Navy now has USS Nimitz in the Gulf region. Nimitz is conducting a tour of the Fifth and Seventh Fleet areas, which means the Middle East, Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Obama talks with communists to air radio show

Aug 31 2014 4:11pm CDT | Source: WND

The Obama administration is looking to negotiate with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the government that emerged after a war costing more than 58,000 American lives, to carry a “Welcome to America” radio program over its state radio station, WND has discovered. If the U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors, or BBG, has its way, its Voice of America program will work in tandem with the Voice of Vietnam, or VOV, to broadcast the 15-minute prime ...

Standing in the ashes

Aug 24 2014 3:13pm CDT | Source: WND

If in the future America sees another catastrophe perpetrated by terrorists and commentators in the media start asking how could this happen, think back to what I’m about to say. America has a failed foreign policy! I don’t believe for a minute that Iran has stopped working on a nuclear weapons program. Iran supports Hamas and ISIS, ISIL and/or the Islamic State. Iran has given weapons and financial support to both of these groups, although currently ISIS is ...

Let's Stop Whistling Dixie: Missouri's Toxic Political Culture Must Change

Aug 20 2014 1:47pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Quite properly, journalistic reaction to events in Ferguson, Missouri, has focused on the militarization of the police, on the role of racism in the killing of unarmed African-American men, and on the political disenfranchisement that allows communities like Ferguson to operate in obvious defiance of public sentiment. But there is another element peculiar to Missouri politics that must have light shed upon it. That is the sharp right-ward turn conservative politics ...

Conservative icon still going strong at 90

Aug 14 2014 9:34pm CDT | Source: WND

She’s been called the “Iron Lady” of the conservative movement by her enemies on the Left, and the “First Lady” of the modern conservative movement by those on the Right, but she may also be the most durable icon of any political movement with a career that has spanned seven decades dating back to Harry Truman. Phyllis Schlafly’s career as a grassroots organizer, prolific author, constitutional lawyer and circuit-riding speaker stretc ...

Dem's Campaign Claims Eight-Month Lag to Repay Taxpayers for Charter Flight 'Mistake'

Aug 13 2014 9:08pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) used taxpayer funds to pay for a November 8, 2013 charter airplane flight to attend a campaign fundraiser in Lake Charles, Louisiana, according to a report from CNN. Needless to say, the use of public funds by elected officials to pay for campaign events is illegal. It wasn't until July 29, 2014, more than eight months later, that the Landrieu campaign "discovered ...

Executive orders? Obama has no choice

Aug 7 2014 5:59pm CDT | Source: WND

Congress has fled Washington for a five-week summer recess, but don’t fret about all of the serious problems left unresolved in their absence. It won’t make any difference. Under Speaker John Boehner, members of the 113th Congress accomplish as much out of town as in town. Which is absolutely nothing. Take their end-of-session Keystone Kops routine on immigration. Faced with a serious humanitarian crisis at the border – as many as 52,000 ...

Signs U.S. won't be rid of Obama in 2016

Jul 27 2014 4:26pm CDT | Source: WND

President Barack Obama’s shameless fundraising tours in the midst of a world in chaos have brought immediate comparisons to Ronald Reagan. Led by his erstwhile advisers, such as Michael Deaver, who understood imagery, Reagan would have been back in the Oval Office, looking presidential and sounding like the statesman he was. Reagan would likely have brought his government together, State Department, NSA, Pentagon and CIA and taken an assessment of how it could ...

Obama the bad actor

Jul 13 2014 4:08pm CDT | Source: WND

If we can say anything about Barack Obama, the guy has chutzpah! You may have missed this. There’s a presidential race in Afghanistan with claims of fraud regarding vote counts. Obama has taken the unusual step of involving the United States in that election, warning candidates to let the fraud investigation continue and, according to the Associated Press, “threatening a cutoff in U.S. aid if ‘extra-constitutional measures’ are taken.” How’s that for the pot calling the kettle bla ...
