US deploys aircraft carrier USS Truman to Gulf

Jul 23 2013, 4:12am CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 23 (IANS) The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

Washington, July 23 — The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

"The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is ready to deploy," Xinhua quoted Rear Adm. Kevin Sweeney, commander of the carrier strike group, as saying in a statement.

"We've worked very hard over the last several months to maintain our combat readiness following the delay of our deployment in February due to sequestration."

The strike group consists of approximately 6,000 sailors and Marines. Besides the USS Truman, it includes the destroyers USS Bulkeley and USS Mason, and the cruiser USS San Jacinto.

Carrier Air Wing 3 will be embarked onboard the Truman with three strike fighter squadrons, a Marine fighter attack squadron, airborne early warning aircraft, electronic attack aircraft and two helicopter squadrons.

They were scheduled to leave Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia Monday for an eight-to-nine month tour of duty in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas, which means Middle East, Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic.

In addition, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg will deploy from Naval Station Mayport in Florida.

In February, the USS Truman was primed and ready to head the Middle East, but the navy cancelled the plan as automatic budget cuts known as sequestration forced a dramatic reshuffling of priorities.

The newly deployed carrier does not mean the US Navy will go back to fielding two carriers in the Gulf.

Automatic budget cuts will prevent the navy from returning a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region in fiscal 2014, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said last week.

The decision to forgo a second carrier next year came as Greenert reported an increase in piracy in the Gulf of Oman over the last eight months.

Greenert said he has seen no evidence that the reduced carrier presence has altered the activity of the Iranian Navy.

US Navy now has USS Nimitz in the Gulf region. Nimitz is conducting a tour of the Fifth and Seventh Fleet areas, which means the Middle East, Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

A crumbling Constitution

Oct 14 2014 6:05pm CDT | Source: WND

Does the Constitution still matter? When it was written, Ben Franklin said the founders gave us a republic, “if you can keep it.” Few people thought the republic would last another 227 years, but it has. The Constitution’s limits on government power helped create the most free and prosperous country on earth. But now, some Americans, right and left, give up on the Constitution whenever it gets in the way of policies they like. Some on the righ ...

Scary Times Call For a Great President: Paul Krugman's Defense of Obama

Oct 12 2014 10:05pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In these last few weeks, there has been a cacophony of Obama-bashing from Republican political candidates. And, after tens of millions of dollars in television ads, the polls have not been favorable. The media and the pundits have piled on too. The Republicans hope to defeat local Democratic candidates by bashing and discrediting the President: We are living in an unsafe world, terrible things are going on, and Obama is responsible. Republicans have publicly boasted ab ...

Why Obama needs protection from the people

Oct 2 2014 6:42pm CDT | Source: WND

One would think with all of the admiration Barack Hussein Obama has from the American people (so the state-run media would have you believe) the least thing he would need would be more protection from the people he is reportedly serving. Yet, it was recently reported that he is building a wall around the White House at taxpayer expense to insulate himself from them. America is awake to the fact that the southern border of the United States remains unsecure ...

Republicans Seek Big Gains in House

"House Republicans have been destined for modest gains in the midterms despite a favorable political environment. Now, just five weeks until Election Day, the party is raising its ambitions, jumping into Democratic strongholds long thought to be beyond the GOP's reach," Politico reports. "The goal: Achieve their ...

American Politics Are a Mess. Is This Why?

Sep 26 2014 6:50pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

In a thought-provoking feature in this week's New York Times Magazine, Matt Bai recounts in (surprisingly gripping) detail the collapse of Gary Hart's presidential campaign and then pivots to make a larger point about the tabloidization of American politics. Bai's article, which is rightly getting a lot of attention, suggests that the push to expose personal character flaws in politicians has shoved substance to the margins, both for the media and for candid ...

Whitewashing history: Communism and Islam

Sep 25 2014 6:14pm CDT | Source: WND

For logic-minded Americans still genuinely puzzled as to how it could be that our presidents and secretaries of state and generals and pundits keep hammering home the big lie that Islam has nothing to do with jihad, that the religion of conquest is a “religion of peace,” I have a special warning. Such widespread, politics- and mass-media-driven brainwashing is nothing new. Just as today’s opinion-makers ...

Best ISIS strategy: Nuke 'em

Sep 19 2014 6:36pm CDT | Source: WND

With near unanimity among experts in warfare, President Barack Hussein Obama’s “strategy” to defeat ISIS is a sham that is designed to lose. While the “Muslim in Chief’s” motivation to fail can be attributed in part to his Islamic heritage, Obama’s professed method of combat is strangely reminiscent of President George W. Bush’s initial strategy after Sept. 11, 2001. In the weeks following the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, “W,” Vice President Dick C ...
