US deploys aircraft carrier USS Truman to Gulf

Jul 23 2013, 4:12am CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 23 (IANS) The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

Washington, July 23 — The US Navy has deployed the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group to the Gulf region.

"The Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group is ready to deploy," Xinhua quoted Rear Adm. Kevin Sweeney, commander of the carrier strike group, as saying in a statement.

"We've worked very hard over the last several months to maintain our combat readiness following the delay of our deployment in February due to sequestration."

The strike group consists of approximately 6,000 sailors and Marines. Besides the USS Truman, it includes the destroyers USS Bulkeley and USS Mason, and the cruiser USS San Jacinto.

Carrier Air Wing 3 will be embarked onboard the Truman with three strike fighter squadrons, a Marine fighter attack squadron, airborne early warning aircraft, electronic attack aircraft and two helicopter squadrons.

They were scheduled to leave Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia Monday for an eight-to-nine month tour of duty in the Fifth and Sixth Fleet areas, which means Middle East, Mediterranean and Eastern Atlantic.

In addition, the guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg will deploy from Naval Station Mayport in Florida.

In February, the USS Truman was primed and ready to head the Middle East, but the navy cancelled the plan as automatic budget cuts known as sequestration forced a dramatic reshuffling of priorities.

The newly deployed carrier does not mean the US Navy will go back to fielding two carriers in the Gulf.

Automatic budget cuts will prevent the navy from returning a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region in fiscal 2014, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said last week.

The decision to forgo a second carrier next year came as Greenert reported an increase in piracy in the Gulf of Oman over the last eight months.

Greenert said he has seen no evidence that the reduced carrier presence has altered the activity of the Iranian Navy.

US Navy now has USS Nimitz in the Gulf region. Nimitz is conducting a tour of the Fifth and Seventh Fleet areas, which means the Middle East, Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean.

Obama the bad actor

Jul 13 2014 4:08pm CDT | Source: WND

29th Santa Barbara International Film Festival - General Festival Events - Day 4
If we can say anything about Barack Obama, the guy has chutzpah! You may have missed this. There’s a presidential race in Afghanistan with claims of fraud regarding vote counts. Obama has taken the unusual step of involving the United States in that election, warning candidates to let the fraud investigation continue and, according to the Associated Press, “threatening a cutoff in U.S. aid if ‘extra-constitutional measures’ are taken.” How’s that for the pot ...

Hillary's Bio Is A Hard Slog, But These Political Memoirs Are Well Worth Your Time

Jun 10 2014 7:45pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

A man fires an Auto Ordinance Thompson-s
NEW YORK -- Hillary Clinton launched her book tour here amid the screeching of partisan spin and the collective yawn of would-be literary critics in the national political media. On one level, the initial reception is unfair. Most of the spinners, pro and con, and critics, good and bad, haven’t read the book. But even those who adore Clinton will have admit that, like the genre of pre-campaign “autobiography” itself, Hard Choices is a hard slog. It’s as engaging and revealing as a ...

Why We Should Pay Attention to Obama's Visit in Europe

Queen Sofia Of Spain Honored At UN With Disability Rights Award
The announced visit of Barack Obama in Poland to meet Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko and the meeting with a large group of central and eastern European leaders in Warsaw, to ensure its full support of N.A.T.O, reminds me about an historical fact that worths a closer look for a better understanding of the present. In the international life, the power is military and economic; the influence is based on intelligence, knowledge of the rules and most important, on the strength of ...

How to Get Rich in America

May 27 2014 12:22pm CDT | Source: Big Government

Keith Alexander Testifies At House Armed Services Hearing
Historically, there were two ways to get rich: hard work and inheritance, apart from hitting the jackpot or robbing a bank of course. Now, in a world of ethically challenged public servants, there is another way – public service. Inheritance, for the few, is still a powerful means. Four of the ten richest members of Congress have inherited wealth. In 2012, Keith Alexander, director of the NSA, called cybercrime the greatest transfer of wealth in history. That may be true, but in 20 ...
