Obama warns of growing inequality in US

Jul 25 2013, 12:17am CDT | by IANS

Washington, July 25 (IANS/EFE) President Barack Obama Wednesday warned of "growing inequality" in the US despite the fact that the country has left behind the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Washington, July 25 (IANS/EFE) President Barack Obama Wednesday warned of "growing inequality" in the US despite the fact that the country has left behind the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

"(T)his growing inequality is not just morally wrong, it's bad economics," Obama said in a much-heralded speech at Knox University in Galesburg, Illinois.

Reversing that trend "has to be Washington's highest priority", he said. "It's certainly my highest priority."

"Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, in particular, Washington hasn't just ignored this problem, too often, Washington has made things worse," the president said, pointing to what he characterized as obstructionism by "a sizable group of Republican lawmakers".

"I care about one thing and one thing only, and that's how to use every minute - the only thing I care about is how to use every minute of the remaining 1,276 days of my term - to make this country work for working Americans again," Obama said.

"And it may seem hard today, but if we're willing to take a few bold steps - if Washington will just shake off its complacency and set aside the kind of slash-and-burn partisanship that we've just seen for way too long - if we just make some common-sense decisions, our economy will be stronger a year from now," he said.

He noted that over the last 40 months US firms have created 7.2 million new jobs and that this year the growth in private sector employment is the strongest since 1999.

Oct 20 2014 9:32pm CDT | Source: WND

The documentary film “There’s No Place Like Utopia” by Joel Gilbert shows Barack Obama as the wizard in an Oz-like story that reveals some surprises, at least surprises for some people. Such as that Peggy Joseph, the Florida voter who became infamous during the 2008 presidential campaign for saying Barack Obama would “pay for my gas and my mortgage,” no longer supports him. Or that an NBC affiliate in Denver refused to air a 30-second television spot promoting it because it didn’t follow rul ...

As of today, his views have changed again – stating, in an interview with the New Yorker, that the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to same-sex marriages in all 50 states. “Ultimately, I think the Equal ...

Americans at Wal-Mart funding Beijing spies?

Oct 20 2014 8:06pm CDT | Source: WND

Every day, millions of Americans walk through their local Wal-Mart’s sliding doors, meander the bright blue aisles and, tempted by yellow smiley-faces, buy more items than are written on their shipping lists, snapping up what certainly seem like good deals at the time. But are Americans getting more than they bargained for when they buy from the bargain store? Many of those “rollback” products at Wal-Mart or other leading retail outlets are made by compan ...
