No brokering on Kashmir, says US

Jul 31 2013, 11:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, August 1 (IANS) As Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Pakistan, American officials said the US was very supportive of recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalise relations, but there was no change in its hands off Kashmir policy.

Washington, August 1 — As Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Pakistan, American officials said the US was very supportive of recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalise relations, but there was no change in its hands off Kashmir policy.

"There's no change in policy in terms of where we are on that," a senior administration official accompanying Kerry told reporters on way to Islamabad Thursday when asked if he expected to have a conversation about Kashmir with the Pakistani Government.

"We do not see ourselves or seek to be in the middle of any conversation between India and Pakistan on Kashmir," he said according to a transcript of the background briefing released here by the state department.

"But certainly we are very supportive of the moves that both India and Pakistan have made to normalise relations," the official added.

The new Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he noted had "already begun the outreach to India and with good cooperation on the Indian side as well in trying to jumpstart the normalisation process."

The official said "the great strides in normalisation on the economic side have been very important the last few years and have really paved the way for better and more constructive conversations on the political side."

"So we'll see where that continues to lead," he said recalling that during his India visit last month, Kerry had "called on the Indians to continue that process of facilitation, as well as the Pakistanis to do things like provide MFN (Most favoured nation) status to the Indians."

"And I'm sure that that will be part of the conversations that we continue to have," the official said. "But we are external actors in this. We are in no way seeking to broker any sort of conversation on Kashmir."

In meetings with Sharif, army chief General Ashfaq Kayani and outgoing president Asif Ali Zardari, Kerry is expected to press the new government on eliminating militant safe-havens as US-led troops prepare to leave Afghanistan next year.

Asked about Pakistan's refusal to give up their use of proxies through certain domestic terrorist groups in the Indo-Pak context, the official said this would be a part of the conversation with the Pakistanis.

"As we've said to them in the past, fostering or helping in any way to provide some sort of base for extremism is ultimately not in any of our interests, including in Pakistan's interest," he said.

"We'll have to see where the new government is on this and what they're willing to do as how they see it as part of their broader efforts at promoting stability," the official said.

"That's in large part one of the reasons we want to have to this conversation face to face and see how far we can move this forward."

On Election Night, Pack an Umbrella

Nov 4 2014 2:02pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

I spent the last 24 hours of the last midterm elections clutching a pocket folder with two sets of index cards inside. On one set was printed a victory speech no one outside our campaign thought we were going to need. On the other was a concession speech I hadn't even shown the guy who might have to deliver it that night, like it was his own eulogy. Four years ago I was writing speeches for Harry Reid of Nevada, the Senate Majority Leader a ...

Two States to Watch

Nov 4 2014 8:56am CST | Source: Taegan Goddard's Political Wire

First Read: “We’ll have a good idea early in the evening of how Election Night is going to break. The two states to watch — North Carolina (where final polling places close at 7:30 am ET) and New Hampshire (where they close at 8:00 pm ET). Every scenario of Democrats holding on to the Senate assumes they win those two states. If we’re able to put those two in the Democratic column, then we’re going to have to wait for Alaska, especially if Georgia goes to a runoff. But if Republicans win o ...

What a Republican Senate Would Mean for World Politics

Nov 4 2014 7:54am CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

On Tuesday, when tens of millions of US voters go to the polls, they are very likely to deliver a US Senate majority to the Republican Party. Six years into the administration of Democratic President Barack Obama and four years after the midterm elections that delivered control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans and conservative Speaker John Boehner, most polls and poll aggregate forecasts give the Republicans anywhere from a strong (70 percent) to moderate (74 percent) ...

How You Can Help Save the Senate

Nov 3 2014 1:56pm CST | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The battle for the Senate has been a cliffhanger for months. Races in at least ten states that will decide the balance of power have remained too close to call, despite corporate pundits' haste to forecast a GOP victory. Now, on the eve of Election Day, it's tempting to throw up your hands, sit back and wait for the returns to come in. That's exactly what Republicans are hoping we'll do. Give up hope and do nothing. ...

MPs Should Get Some Business Experience before Lecturing Us Against Exiting the EU

Nov 3 2014 9:23am CST | Source: Big Government

I'm getting quite tired of listening to politicians, and indeed some friends, who have never set up a business, or run a business, tell me about recklessness of pulling out of the European Union. Now, as of yet, I don't have kids, although I am a proud uncle. But based on the fact that I know so little about parenting, I wouldn't march blasé into broadcasting studios lecturing parents on where to shop, or on the process of applying for nursery vouc ...

Last-minute polling finds the Republicans on track for a Senate victory tomorrow. Early voting, though, suggests it could be close. And what kind of voters are still undecided? This is HuffPollster for Monday, November 3, 2014. A GOP SENATE LOOKS MORE LIKELY - With less than 24 hours remaining before polls open nationwide, a final round of polls largely confirms previous findings in the much-watched battle for control of the U.S. Senate.
