No brokering on Kashmir, says US

Jul 31 2013, 11:06pm CDT | by IANS

Washington, August 1 (IANS) As Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Pakistan, American officials said the US was very supportive of recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalise relations, but there was no change in its hands off Kashmir policy.

Washington, August 1 — As Secretary of State John Kerry flew into Pakistan, American officials said the US was very supportive of recent moves by India and Pakistan to normalise relations, but there was no change in its hands off Kashmir policy.

"There's no change in policy in terms of where we are on that," a senior administration official accompanying Kerry told reporters on way to Islamabad Thursday when asked if he expected to have a conversation about Kashmir with the Pakistani Government.

"We do not see ourselves or seek to be in the middle of any conversation between India and Pakistan on Kashmir," he said according to a transcript of the background briefing released here by the state department.

"But certainly we are very supportive of the moves that both India and Pakistan have made to normalise relations," the official added.

The new Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, he noted had "already begun the outreach to India and with good cooperation on the Indian side as well in trying to jumpstart the normalisation process."

The official said "the great strides in normalisation on the economic side have been very important the last few years and have really paved the way for better and more constructive conversations on the political side."

"So we'll see where that continues to lead," he said recalling that during his India visit last month, Kerry had "called on the Indians to continue that process of facilitation, as well as the Pakistanis to do things like provide MFN (Most favoured nation) status to the Indians."

"And I'm sure that that will be part of the conversations that we continue to have," the official said. "But we are external actors in this. We are in no way seeking to broker any sort of conversation on Kashmir."

In meetings with Sharif, army chief General Ashfaq Kayani and outgoing president Asif Ali Zardari, Kerry is expected to press the new government on eliminating militant safe-havens as US-led troops prepare to leave Afghanistan next year.

Asked about Pakistan's refusal to give up their use of proxies through certain domestic terrorist groups in the Indo-Pak context, the official said this would be a part of the conversation with the Pakistanis.

"As we've said to them in the past, fostering or helping in any way to provide some sort of base for extremism is ultimately not in any of our interests, including in Pakistan's interest," he said.

"We'll have to see where the new government is on this and what they're willing to do as how they see it as part of their broader efforts at promoting stability," the official said.

"That's in large part one of the reasons we want to have to this conversation face to face and see how far we can move this forward."

Power Says Other Nations Will Join The U.S. In Airstrikes In Syria

Sep 21 2014 10:00am CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, said Sunday that other nations would likely join the U.S. in airstrikes to target Islamic State, the militant group also known as ISIL, in Syria. ABC's "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos pointed out that not even the British government has agreed to join so far, making it increasingly likely that the U.S. would be going it alone if it proceeds wi ...

NEW YORK – The New York Times has excluded David Limbaugh’s new book “Jesus on Trial: A Lawyer Affirms the Truth of the Gospel,” from it bestseller list despite sales figures superior to several books currently on the list. The book’s publisher, Regnery Publishing, told WND the exclusion of Limbaugh’s book from the Sept. 28 print hardcover bestseller list reflects ideological bias against conservative and Christian titles. “While publish ...

John Kerry: US At War With The 'Enemy of Islam'

Sep 19 2014 10:03am CDT | Source: Big Government

On Thursday In a session with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) whether America was at war in Iraq and Syria. Kerry responded: “If you’re more comfortable calling it a war against this enemy of Islam then please do so. We’re happy to call it that.” So its official: America is at war with the enemy of Islam. However, strange bedfellows arise if the Obama administration so chooses to uphold Kerry ...

Congressman: Obama plotting ISIS airstrikes a 'big mistake'

Sep 18 2014 7:19pm CDT | Source: WND

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., is ripping President Obama over reports he will personally oversee the bombing of ISIS targets in Syria and believes the bipartisan vote to arm and train Syrian rebels for the fight is a “big mistake.” The U.S. has been conducting air strikes against ISIS in Iraq for weeks. However, according to the Wall Street Journal, Obama is planning to be directly involved in plotting air strikes across the border in Syria. “The U.S. military campaign against Islamist militan ...

More insane arming of 'moderates'

Sep 18 2014 6:24pm CDT | Source: WND

I’m trying to look on the bright side of what passed for debate over another doomed effort to secure U.S. interests by embarking on the fruitless pursuit, cultivation and empowerment of Islamic “moderates,” this time in Syria. We would get better results sending an expeditionary force after the Loch Ness sea monster. No matter. In deliberations resembling a stampede, we heard: The ISIS is coming, the ISIS is coming! Qu ...

Kerry: America at 'war against this enemy of Islam'

Sep 18 2014 4:54pm CDT | Source: WND

(Washington FreeBeacon) Secretary of State John Kerry gave a long, meandering reply to Chairman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee Rep. Joe Wilson (R., S.C.) after being asked: “Yes or no? Is America at war?” “Well, you know,” Kerry paused to laugh, “Um, I’m going to answer that, Mr. Chairman, but um…you know…” Kerry waffled a while longer, explaining how the American mission against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) is not like the ...

HUFFPOST HILL - The House Will Smell Ya Later

Sep 18 2014 4:35pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

Turnout was high for today's vote on Scottish independence, and as soon as we know how that'll affect Hillary's chances in Iowa, we'll let you know. Ezekiel Emanuel penned an Atlantic essay titled, "Why I Hope to Die at 75" that had absolutely nothing to do with putting up with an 80-year-old Rahm Emanuel. And the House is avoiding a number of key votes to get back to their districts and tend to the important issues they must ...

Obama Is Wrong That ISIS Is 'Not Islamic'

Sep 18 2014 4:14pm CDT | Source: Politics - The Huffington Post

"We are fighting an ideology, not a regime." - U.S. Secretary Of State John Kerry "Now let's make two things clear: ISIL is not 'Islamic.' No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of ISIL's victims have been Muslim. And ISIL is certainly not a state. It was formerly al-Qaeda's affiliate in Iraq, and has taken advantage of sectarian strife and Syria's civil war to gain territory on both ...
